[May, 2017]  Whenever I am on the road in Scotland I do some re-tastings using miniature bottles.  The bottling code is 2011/05/16 15:42 LD60580 - so the whisky was distilled before June 1993.

The colour is mahogany and the texture shows a few slow legs and late tears.  The nose is on a beautiful clean sherry profile, not the slightest trace of sulphur.  But raisins, orange peel, chocolate and many more aromas - really delicious.  It arrives smooth and instantly mouth-coating on the palate with some bitter/adstringent notes from heavy tannins (that are bearable, but not pleasant).

The taste again is on a clean sherry profile imbedded in strong wooden structures that are not as unpleasant as with the first sip.  The finish is long and surprisingly not bitter or too woody (as if the woodiness vanishes the longer you taste it - or I simply adopt to this strong flavour).  Water is not needed as it flattens the dram.

All in all a nice heavily sherried dram with a strong wooden spike - for those who love the extremes!

a lot of sherry, then fruity sues, some caramel and dried fruit
    • Taste
      93 93
sues with caramel, chocolate, fruits, then the sherry comes out paired with a subtle spiciness
    • Finish
      92 92
Sherry, spicy with malt and a little sweet. Long-lasting

A complex whisky with a strong Oloroso aroma.
    • Nose
      99 99
heavy sweetness (comes over like a syrup) together with a nice sherry aroma of dried fruits and dominant raisins and figs. Fudge with chocolate and something very slightly nutty complete the sweetness. In the background I have a slight note of cinnamon on the spices. Wow, pretty complex; the aroma is awesome.

first soft, then strong spice builds up, becomes oily in the course. Oloroso sherry and sweet as well as dried fruits. Then dark chocolate with a bitter aroma / dark chocolate. The back gets drier. An oak note and a nut aroma (almonds & walnuts) occupy the mouth. The second sip is significantly sweeter and fruity.
    • Finish
      95 95
long-lasting; the sherry remains dominant together with the slightly bitter chocolate (for me it is just so / is on the border) and something spicy and the nut aroma. The (oak) spice with sherry is retained for a very long time and is on the tongue.

Nice whisky, definitely heavily sherried. Nice sherry nose, sherry taste and sherry finish. Not very complex but really pleasant and drinkable. A must have for whisky lovers. Reasonably priced but I've heard rumors that there is shortage of this expression at the distillery so be quick!
    • Nose
Sweet, sherry, dried fruits (figs, cherries), baked apples, dark chocolate, clove, orange zest, water opens dark honey notes (buckwheat?)
    • Taste
Sweet, oaky, spicy, dark berries (perhaps overripe cherries), prunes, nutmeg, cereal, nutty notes, sweet orange, caramel
    • Finish
Semi-long, mouthwatering, warm, slightly bitter, ginger and some spices, hint of nuts

Thanks to the old GlenDronach miniature set, I was able to try this 18yo Allardice besides his high-achieving brother, the 15yo Revival (older version - id: 53536). The nose is, once again, heavily sherried, but the 18yo, whilst still producing complex and interesting aromas has sharper fruits and more bitterness. Likewise the palate, whilst quite similar to the 15, is weaker, more bitter, less creamy, less sweet. Ditto with the finish. Serge was right when he said the Allardice was, "a very good whisky but the 15 is in a different league."
