[July, 2018]  This is a different batch of the old 12-years old Lagavulin to the ones I tasted so far what can be seen because there is the size and abv information not at the upper left and right corners of the label as with the other releases.  So I bought a sample at the Limburg Whisky Fair to check if it is as good as the other two I had so far (and scored 93 and 95 points respectively).  These bottles were pretty cheap when released back in the seventies and eighties.

The colour is burnished and the texture shows a sticky ring that builds fat tears with very slow legs.  The nose offers this absolutely adorable trio of malty, peaty and sherry aromas these old Lagavulin are famous for together with some fine OBFs.  Hard to name all impressions here and to be honest:  I rather enjoy this fine dram while watching the extra time of the Football World Championship semi-final (Croatia vs. England) than to analyse more than thirty aromas.  The whisky really charms the taste buds when it enters the mouth - it immediately coats them with a smooth and delicious feeling without any distracting moment.  The taste is multi-layered and very complex for a 12-years old but usually they added much older casks to such batches in the seventies and eighties (you ever heard of the whisky crisis of the eighties?).  Today the controllers would kill you if you do such a thing at any distillery - that is why the young whiskies of our time taste much more immature than decades ago.  This taste is simply great, most probably the mysterious bottle aging had a positive effect too on better integrating the different flavours over time.  The finish is very long and without any flaw, this is excellent stuff in all dimensions!  Water is not needed.

All the different batches of the old 12-years old releases of Lagavulin I had so far were truly excellent and I doubt there is any bad or average only at all.  The share of sherry casks varies from batch to batch what is the main difference and can be seen at the colour of the drams (they did not use caramel to fix it like today).  But the malt quality itself is consistently top notch - this is what makes distilleries famous (and no marketing bucks are needed at all)…

PS:  By the way, Croatia just scored the 2:1 - poor England (the Scots would say)...

Second time trying this, from a newly opened bottle, much better than the first experience (from a nearly finished bottle)

Seaweeds, very medicinal, phenolic, Japanese Kombu, dark chocolate, a touch of tropical fruits, such as papaya. A little bit cardboardy, very sooty, coffee.

Very spicey, dry and sooty, some great old dry sherry, huge fine leather, extremely salty.

      Long, sooty, seaweeds.

Great integration of peat and sherry, mineral peat, a bit on the industrial side, cooked fruits, some tropical notes, brine, liquorice, aniseed, citrus, superb complexity

A classic of the sherry-high esters combo

Gasoline and sherry, very dirty, one of those exciting sherry-old peat integration. A Mustang of flavors, it got everything.
    • Taste

Pencil peel, some plastic and paint, leathery and earthy, red fruits, still dominated by the gasoline+sherry theme
    • Finish
      91 91
      Short to medium, dried fruits.

Had the opportunity to sample this beautiful whisky at Gathering 2018. Incredible on all levels. From nose to finish, can still remember the experience of this whisky.
