  1. Magnus Hillman scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

The soft briny charachter of Springbank is not found in this version, probably impacted by the rum casks. However, the intrinsic quality and good wood management of Springbank is appearant. An excellent dram!
    • Nose
What first hits me is tropical fruit, overripe banana, strawberries, treacle, grass and a touch of casco RX-glue (not in a bad way though).
    • Taste
On the palate there is sweet and sour citrus, barley sugar, earl grey tea and icing sugar.
    • Finish
substantial and lingering with sweet liquorice and slightly overdue and bitter breakfast tea.

One of the best whiskys on a rum barrel
    • Nose
      92 92
Sweet, fragrant, smoky and then fruity notes (banana), coffee with milk and dried figs,.
    • Taste
      93 93
Soft with aromas of marsmellows, toffee and caramelized fruit, apples and pears and spicy notes.
    • Finish
      93 93
In the long aftertaste some smoky and spicy notes with aromas of raisins and baked banana come up. The sweetness of the rum does not dominate. This keeps the character of Springbank.

[February, 2012]  I had this dram during a "Springbank" tasting at Bonn.

    In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 90.  My notes state a surprisingly fruity profile.

    Serge says;

Springbank 16 yo 1991/2007 'Rum Wood' (54.2%, OB, 6000 bottles)  This one was matured for 8 years in bourbon, then 8 years in rum. Colour: white wine. Nose: completely different from the 2001, more citric and vegetal at first nosing. A lot of cut grass, lemon, green tea, rhubarb, then more lemon pie and cake but it remains rather ‘green’. The rum’s influence is rather discreet so far. Whiffs of wet chalk. With water: gets a tad more sourish and buttery but also rather smokier, just like the 2001. Mouth (neat): we’re closer to the 2001 on the palate, only with a little more roundness (candy sugar, sultanas). Quite hot I must say, but drinkable when neat. Grows more and more lemony, with also quite some notes of green apples. With water: the rums seems to come out a little more to the front, it got more polished and smooth. More raisins and a little date liqueur. Works well with Springbank. Finish: malty and raisiny but with the typical freshness lingering. Comments: we’re a little farer from the distillate than with the 2001 but it’s still a very good bottling. A case where rum works much better than wine (isn’t that always the case? ;-)). It’s also true that they probably used ex-Cadenhead rum casks, and that Cadenhead’s rums are usually excellent. SGP:452 - 86 points.

A tough dram, not very complex, but very nice. You have to love lemon and cereals!
    • Nose
Fresh and sweet notes. Lemon, a lot of lemon. Cream, lemon meringue pie. Banana notes flambé ... with rum. Of course :). It's very sweet, fruity and acidic at the same time. Rather interesting! Sweet notes of vanilla adorn this. It's very nice !
    • Taste
It's powerful, but not alcoholic at all. We find, as on the nose, this very lemony side, but here with a hint of salt. We also have a vegetable and cereal side but not dry at all. It is also very fruity: grapes, rhubarb, ripe banana, which goes well with pepper caramel. It is both sweet (texture) and powerful (in taste).
    • Finish
Long and sweet on lemon and cereals. Some spices and pepper remain in the mouth.

Tasted a sample, in September 2014.
    • Nose
Sweet and fruity with notes of citrus, overripe bananas, gooseberries, strawberries, rhubarb, caramel, burnt sugar, vanilla, freshly cut grass, artichokes, fennel, freshly churned butter, a touch of glue, one deskret hint of rum and a little pine.
    • Taste
Search and fruity, soft and sweet with notes of citrus, green apple, banana, a little passion fruit, caramel, ginger, pepper, star anise, honey, raisins, marzipan, nuts, Earl Grey tea, powdered sugar, ginger, white pepper, jasmine, elderflower and smoke. With water the rum tasted little clearer.
    • Finish
Long, smooth and pleasant with notes of bitter tea, malt, slightly raisins, sweet licorice, salty, slightly metallic and a little old wood.

Better than expected - especially the taste and finish are very good. The influence of the rum wood is obvious, which is no wonder, because 8 years in rum wood is more than a simple finish. For other whiskies this would be a complete maturation. Whisky and rum wood in a harmonic combination.
    • Nose
Warming and a little spirity, with notes of cooked artichokes, grass, barley, hints of smoke and decent yellow fruits. The rum wood makes the nose sweeter with a certain foreign component, untypical for whisky.
    • Taste
Warming - now with more typical Springbank character. The rum is making it a little softer and sweeter. Alcoholic with a decent spicyness (ginger and white pepper), caramel and smoke. Tasty!
    • Finish
      Long and pleasant.
