  1. Kaleva scored this whisky 74 points Expert Senior

Useless whisky. Very young and underdeveloped, unpleasantly spirituous on the nose. Very malty with bitter aftertaste. I have no idea who will buy it second time after tasting once.
    • Nose
Rather sharp, spirituous, porridge, crust of bread, dusty barley, vanilla, lemon zest, green apple, honey notes
    • Taste
Malty, spicy, creamy, a bit sweet and noticeably bitter with wet wood feeling
    • Finish
Short, warm, malty, radish notes, slightly bitter

  4. Boletus did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

A tasty, light summer whisky. Not particularly complex and persistent, but very pleasantly rounded and balanced.
    • Nose
Overripe fruit, honey, a perfumed sweetness dominates at the beginning, ripe pineapple, subtle smell of silo, fresh juicy barley, vanilla, grated coconut, a few crumbs of lemon zest
    • Taste
Soft and supple entry, toasted oak, sweet vanilla, barley sugar, industrial honey, smooth young malt, mealy ''Red Delicious'' apple, candied pineapple and papaya bits
    • Finish
Rather short finish, coconut macaroons, hazelnuts and nougat, toasted vanilla, caramel, sugared apricots appear, delicate oak notes create a pleasant mouthfeel

it is very light and smooth but not too sweet it is like a lemon cake

  7. Zombie scored this whisky 79 points Member Junior

    Nose:
Ethanol dominating, slight hints of wet dog and wood

    Palette:
Dry Oak dominating but still watered down, slight hint of coconut and green grape.

    Finish:
Dry oak with the coconut being a bit more pronounced.

Anything but complex, very accessible. Definitely a lightweight but easy to drink. Tastes way better than what it smells like. Would suggest this along some classic salt potato chips.

Smooth and fruity. Smell is fruity and flower.

    The color is golden.

The nose is even, moderately sweet with hints of vanilla, oak, fruits, herbs, caramel, some baked apples, very slightly woodsmoke is felt. In the glass, it quickly simplifies to fruity-grainy New Make notes. Yes, this whisky is not for thoughtful tasting, a typical sprinter that runs out of steam quickly.

The taste is even, simple, soft, with notes of herbs, fruits, vanilla, oak and light sourness, and towards the end, a new-makeness begins to break through.

The finish is generally short, soft, with notes of spices, oak, vanilla, herbs and apples.

The whisky is well balanced, but very simple and young. Over time, a new make begins to break through in it, which indicates a large presence of barrels that are not the first filling. But in general, we get a standard set of bourbon barrels in whisky: vanilla, fresh fruit, herbaceousness and light wood smoke. Almost a barrel and made all his taste. The main advantage of this whisky is that it is easy to drink. There are no negative notes in it, the aftertaste is short and not nasty, it is not necessary to drink or eat. Simple, drinking whisky, more of a cocktail. Just on par with the good blends it competes with on price. The difference is malt whisky, but simple and not very interesting.

This Auchentoshan bottling matured exclusively in first-fill Bourbon casks made of American white oak.

  13. Malthead19 scored this whisky 70 points Connoisseur

    - a decent NAS whisky from the Lowlands
    - good and drinkable but of course not a big one
    Flavor explosion
    - is in my opinion well behind the Glenlivet
    12 first fill bourbon
    - OK for less than € 25
    • Nose
malty, honey, a lot of fruit, peach / citrus note, toffee, more fruit than vanilla, dried fruit (dried apricot)
    • Taste
velvety soft fruity start, becomes slightly burning, oak, sweetness, toffee, the bourbon barrel storage is clearly noticeable
    • Finish
short and soft, with a long finish of oak and sweetish bourbon notes, becoming a bit bitter

  14. CT14 scored this whisky 67 points Member Senior

Too spirity, I did not enjoy the bitterness of it, either. Very one-dimensional. While cheap for a single malt, there are yet far superior options to it, such as Tomatin Legacy, Deanston Virgin Oak, even different expressions of the Glen Moray range. I bought this with the Auchentoshan 12, the 12 is decent and a lot better for only a few bucks more.

it's hard to say that this is a good whisky, rather a walk-through to try.
    • Nose
a sharp aroma of varnish, chymosis, alcoholism, lasts a long time, then there is a vanilla-honey theme and all the same varnish from the furniture workshop
    • Taste
sharp alcoholic, heavy, a little sweetness from the same vanilla, but no more
    • Finish
      a little sweetness, short

  16. sirfreibier scored this whisky 75 points Member Junior

All in all, thin and boring. The nose is the best thing about it. Found some black tee and some cinnamon in there. Taste is flat and bitter. Finish is very short and woody.
No off notes but not much to be found here.

  17. Munio scored this whisky 76 points Member Senior

Simple and light. Vanilla, milk chocolate and lacquer on nose. Bourbon barrel taste and softly acrid. Gently sweet. Nothing special, but when we see "no age statement" and price, this malt is ... acceptable

    chemically sweet, dusty, varnished.
    • Nose
      74 74
It feels like you have entered a closed room where the parquet was recently varnished.
    • Taste
      74 74
Sweet tones of burnt apple jam. Sickly sweet and varnished.
    • Finish
      73 73
      Varnished, sweet, short-lived.

    • Nose

sweet, vanilla, creamy, light and fresh, citric, after a while it opens heavy: raisins, dried fruit, spicy, fresh fruits, powdered sugar, one-dimensional
    • Taste

    • Finish

Tasted blind. My sister’s clue is: ’Easily available in supermarkets, but I really like it’.

N: Malty, a touch leathery, a little peanut oil,.. Probably 40%, no more,… typical barley juice fodder.

T: Slightly thin sharp and sour, a touch greasy,… Could this be Irish? A blend? Possibly,.. nah. Later on, more chalky, malty sweet.

F: Fairly short, still zesty and sour, helped by a little chocolate and toffee though still thin, greasy sour, and chalky/soft dusty.

C: Nice nose, the rest, not particularly inspiring. Revealed: For the price, however, it’s fair - and at least it’s not so bourbon/oak/vanilla driven, so easily a few more point than last time I tried this in 2017:

At the distillery during the tour it was the entry malt and kinda fun in the morning. But which malt wouldn't in such a setting and with senses still fresh? Inoffensive but rather forgettable malt nobody really needs.

Most interesting part of the tasting. Thin, sweet, sweet pastry, some raisin, cheap ginger ale, oak, subtle acetone.

    Okay, 80 Points
    Why?
I think, every whisky I drink, which I like, deserves the 80 Points.
Is it a special one? No.
    Anything notable? No.
    Drinkable? Yes.
A nice bottle for on the table while hanging out with friends? Yes.
    Cheap? Yes.
What else do you expect from a very cheap whisky?
The same as when you buy an 18 year old?
It's ten times better than a Glen Talloch.
So it still deserves the 80 points.
No recommendation to others, but I could buy this one again (as a Auchentoshan-fan for at the end of the evening.

Yes, it's not a taste explosion.
But if you like it more elegant and like to take some time to look for the flavors, it is neat.
There is not much, but what is there is stylish and clean.
The distillery character also comes through.
Good "Eichwhisky" or a beginner in a tasting.
I wonder if the bottlings vary so much.
Many seem to really hate this whisky (including Ralfy). I can not understand that, so this malt is not wrong.

There is no defense Auchentoshan could present me as to why they put out such a mediocre release. Simply aiming at the uneducated consumer.

Jo, is not the best whisky ever bottled, but pretty tasty. Typical Auchentoshan grassiness, not too little bourbon barrel, lots of citrus. Smaller deductions, because despite the intensive Fassreifung clearly youth is herauszuschmecken. It does not bother so much, I'll give it another try ...

N: How valuable to have at least nosed the new make first. It gives a firm base & context for appreciating and attempting to decipher this young 6yo. There’s a soapy note and that grimy waxy note that showed up in the new make. It’s a little better with water, though now with more vanilla and burnt soapy popcorn. Seems very much shackled by the spirit’s light yet firm & raw nature, and six years in oak doesn’t seem enough time to temper that once 81% abv spirit. A pokey spirity start.
T: Pretty rough with some burnt notes and quite some prickles. It’s more cereal-y with water. Again it never gets away from the distillate's rawness despite being reduced all the way down to 40%. That spirit may be light, but that doesn’t mean it can’t slap you round the chops.
    F: Short, dry vanilla.
C: I remind myself that the wood has to tread carefully around the spirit, given the third distillate leads to a gentler character - and yet i’m not that convinced by the spirit, nor the cask activity. Is this the right whisky to showcase the distillery? Of course not.Scores a D

Nose : the aroma is thin, somewhat musty, in the shades the main role is played by lemon peel and nuts (fried peanuts), caramel of a burnt barrel, creamy toffee. Light perfume train. Not alcoholic. Overall pleasant, but liquid and flat. 18.5. Taste : sweet, caramel, light shade of coals. Wet board on the background, bitter. Consistency is pleasant, not sharp. 18.5. Aftertaste : generally sweet, slightly perfumed . Moderately bitter, a pinch of spices. 17.5 Bottom line : basic, flat, but soft and extremely spiky single malt whisky. In general - sweet and caramel, moderate such. There are flavors and flaws - excessive bitterness, emerging from the background, but increasing to the aftertaste. Something repellent is not direct. Conclusion - whisky to "pobuhat." Better base blends. The balance is 18.5.

Fits, decent Auchentoshan in the lower price range, his 30 € he earns, cheap alternative to Valinch. The Brennereicharakter is again very clear, for example, if you do not like the 12, should also make this a big bow, but I like it.

Well, it's not so sad, as I expected, it's quite a raw entry-level mole, it's very simple and primitive, but nothing bad can not be said, it seems like a good transition from blends to slogans, but the price tag is not so humane, for the same price goes Old Palteni 12, a couple of oiro more expensive - Talisker 10, and this is a whisky of a completely different category.

A good one ... very delicious.
    • Nose
The nose is distinctively malty with a gentle scent of polished oak. A sweet bouquet of vanilla, a hint of coconut, spicy oak dust and an idea dried fruit. Water offers fruits dipped in dark chocolate, dry (yes, almost dusty) oak and coarse-grained malt.
    • Taste
The mouthfeel is clear-neutral. Malt notes that can be said to be "typical Lowland". Oak followed by some dryness, with soft orange fruits. Water makes the malt sweet and the oak milder and drier. Small fruity points and a splash of orange juice blend harmoniously into the overall picture.
    • Finish
In the finish spicy oak and a good portion of malt. Over time, fruity notes of pumpkin and mango form. Towards the end gradually drying. Water makes a clear and well-standing oaky dryness with fruity tones fight. Free to open sweet milk and soft Katjes.

Friendly and soft whisky, more flavor and character than for example the 'Classic', and very reasonably priced.

The fruity character is interesting, but this whisky is unfortunately much too young and especially too diluted. In crude, 3-4 points may be up for grabs.

Plus a whisky to take as an aperitif
    • Nose
Nose quite woody, we feel the first fill, with also cinnamon, vanilla, A little yellow fruits, plums, mirabelle plums.
      Rather ample for 40%
    • Taste
Dry texture and short passage in the mouth. Made very very young and diluted.
Marked wood notes, cinnamon always and a little fruit (mirabelle, fig, quetsche, plums ...) but also a lot of vegetal and bitter notes.
    • Finish
Short and bitter, mostly on wood and vegetal notes.

    N-
Light, fresh and pleasant. Fragrant oak, fresh citrus, apple and whiff
of honey with vanilla. Lingering new-made add dimension to the otherwise
feminine aroma. Lemony at the tail.

P- Light, almond with fruits of apple and peaches. Muesli.

F- Short, exit gently with drift of vanilla.

Light and unobtrusive. Light fruits, a little vanilla.
    • Taste
Not determined. Something fruity sweetness, cardboard, caraway. Rather thin and short.

  79. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

No complexity monster, but a very good beginner. I find the sturdiness of this whisky a nice central flavor.
    • Nose
Sweet, fruity, lemon, vanilla. Straightforward and unfussy.
    • Taste
Nice onset, a certain bitterness and zestigkeit (lemon peel), with some vanilla and a little malt.
    • Finish
The sturdiness remains, a nice bitterness, slightly malty-young aftertaste.

Product smooth and too diluted, on cereals and some dried fruits, a hint of vanilla and lime. Short final. Rather better than the Classic for my taste but still quite innocuous.

It’s whisky ‘Captain’ but not as we know it...
First tasting from the new bottle

Initially, thin, spirit nip on the nose, hints
of spiced marmalade (as in the virgin oak LE costing 3.5x the price – and three times the body and flavour 0omph) I find a difficult to describe sweet fruitiness, perfumey with unusual spices – subtle
cinnamon takes the lead definitely, but perhaps with mace threaded in too (not the self defence stuff) . I initially got a distinct but slightly off putting top note
of putty/ linseed oil (other's have said coconut or oats?) With the addition of a touch of water and a little patience (ie 20-30minutes) this malt transformed into a very dynamic dram. The
Linseed appears to shift back and forth to pears and cox’s apple juice,
revealing the bourbon maturation, there's also a touch of marzipan and of course the ubiquitous spiced
marmalade. There is a subtle oak spice note (easily revealed by setting a lid
or tasting size Glencairn on top of the standard glass. Leaving this in place
for two to three minutes allows the lighter volatiles to evaporate and settle
on the underside). In the mouth delicate and sweet, short arrival – a spirity youthful
nip, with a medium finish. For the price (£20) a delicate Lowlander, very different yet entertaining
and a competent dram, 84pts from me.

Lets see how it plays out as the bottle settles.

I bought this at a whisky festival because A: it was really nice, and B: it was cheap.
    • Nose
Mmmmm!!! As you can imagine, this is big on the vanilla, very floral and confectionery, nice and fresh and sweet, with tinned peach, talcum powder and citrus.
    • Taste
Medium bodied this is smooth, light and creamy with a lot of apricot. This is like a mixed fruit salad in the mouth. This goes down really well if you have just finish a nice dessert.
    • Finish
The Medium dry finish with citrus notes.

Over ripe fruits, oak, and a sour grapefruit finish. It's a little bland, but still quite enjoyable.

    Woooooooow!

40%, NoAgeStatement, Chillfiltered, with colouring, 30€

Doesnt sound too good, does it?

But it is, especially if you are into unpeated whiskies from bourbon casks(like me).

What to find: oat, sweetness, peaches, very ripe and full for NaS, remarkable oak influence, mmmh delicous

This one is maybe not the most complex or special whisky in the world, but it has all the fantastic bourbon cask flavours i am searching for and absolutely nothing to dislike. Surprisingly intense and satisfying. Once again, Auchentoshan delivers sheer high quality. Chapeau!!

Clearly a young animal (I suspect
around 6 years), but quite an improvement over the Classic and a great
introduction to the new, modern Auchentoshan. Around 35 EUR, which is a steal.
With a big thanks to Jen at Auchentoshan for the sample.
    • Nose
The nose is fresh and sweet.
Freshly cut grass, apple juice from Golden Delicious, lemon peel, pecan nuts
and soft oak. A lot more creamy than the Classic and hence more interesting.
Frangipane cake, coconut and vanilla. A very pleasant surprise.
    • Taste
The arrival is rather soft, but
very flavorsome.  Light and fruity with apples and citrus (somewhat zesty
now). Mildly drying. Becomes warmer with the second sip.
    • Finish
It is not a very long finish, but
      it remains nicely fruity.
