    • Nose
      87 87
On first approach it is dry, spicy, olorosso sherry masking pleasant sulphurous and industrial notes (yes that is a thing). Rich chocolate cake, Black Forest gateaux, sweet red pepper, resin, gas, boiled broccoli and other vegetables. With water the sherry richness collapses revealing a lighter fruitiness, sea air and chalk.
    • Taste
      86 86
Similar to the nose but with less gas which makes way for a saline minerality. Spicy with bitter orange, dried fruitcake, crystallised (candied) orange and lemon. Water subdues the dram and dulls the fruitcake, replacing it with lighter orchard fruits.
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium, fruity, spicy with tonic bitterness that’s increased by the addition of water.

A fantastic amalgamation of the industrial and meaty Ben Nevis spirit with the richer fruity notes from the sherry cask. Diesel, chocolate, oranges, fruitcake, malty ale, ginger, dates, maple syrup, tobacco, pepper, mushrooms. Water reveals fresher fruits of the orchard variety. A hint of vegetal sulphur takes it down a notch or two but this is still a stellar whisky.

well, what´s special about BenNevis? The aromatic profile says well done whisky, but not more. But there is a not easily to define satisfaction which starts with the nose, glides in the taste and lingers until finished. It´s kind of undefinable "umami" which gives a kick to your reception, like biting in a perfect medium steak (maybe that´s a "male" symptomatic).

one backdraw to this one: nose is best at dilution which is far too much for taste and finish.

  8. Hare&Copper scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Meaty and malty - beef stock, vegemite -- some sulpher, boiled cabbage (but not unpleasant). After a while it turns more citric and candy like along with nice powdery cocoa and vanilla. Some peat.
    • Taste
Quite malty and vegetal. Ale, tobacco, aniseed, nice sherry wood influences and spice.
    • Finish
      Medium long. Oak spice.
