It certainly is not 12ka. Deep and rich taste. Pleasant sherry sweetness and at the same time fresh. Or 6 years strongly went to the benefit, or pre-exposure in sherry played with these alcohols in unison.

After trying a new batch of the 12yo, and being really impressed with the improvement over older batches, I was keen to revisit the 18yo. The last time I tried it I liked it a lot (86pts I think) but felt it still had a few flaws. Placing this new batch of 18yo side by side with a 2016 batch of the 12yo, there wasn't a major difference in the colour (I really appreciate that these OBs have no artificial colour, are ncf and bottled at a higher strength). However, the nose suggested a higher proportion of sherry casks in the 18yo, with richer, stewed fruits and heavier, more leathery oak than the 12yo. Despite this, they are both clearly the same wonderful distillate, with that trademark nutty, salty and creamy base. I couldn't say which I preferred more...so I'll simply say that I loved them both. They are both great examples of non/lightly-peated Islay whisky. A drop of water helped to further release the complexity of the nose. There was a bigger divergence between the 12yo and 18yo on the palate, with the extra years in the cask and higher proportion of sherry casks giving additional richness and depth. The palate of the 12 was very good, but the 18yo is really magical, with a velvety, creamy texture. There is a wonderful balance of sherry cask sweetness with salty and nutty notes that are a trademark of Bunnahabhain (again, I struggle to get Cadbury's Fruit and Nut bars out of my mind). A drop of water released some extra peppery/chilli notes that I really liked. This all leads to a salty and creamy finish that lingers long on the tongue and in the memory. So, again, it seems like the newer batches of the 18yo are much more to my liking than the older batches I previously tried. This is a really exceptional dram that shows off the distillery to its full potential. Great stuff!

Excellent balance: Sherry fruits, cream, spice and peat all add their part without any of these aspects dominating. Moreover, the waxy and leathery notes give it a very mature impression. 88/89.
    • Nose
Blueberry, leather, toffee, marzipan, citrus, cranberry, orange and beeswax.
    • Taste
Blueberry, leather, beeswax, chocolate, cranberry, toffee, orange, white pepper, peat and mint.
    • Finish
Toffee, chocolate, peat, beeswax, eucalyptus, raspberry and clove.
