Not bad, no real tough edges, but not much depth of profile, an easy sipper.
Much better single malts available for the same money.

    Yamazaki Distillers Reserve 43%.

    Golden yellow.

Aroma dried apricot, grapefruit peel, lemon biscuit, pleasant fruity spirit. Lots more apricot.

Taste is easy, rounded, good balance of spirit and wood and bottled at a good ABV for the character. Touch of eggnog. Indistinct fruits and biscuits. Fruity Japanese character with a little touch of char and black pepper into the finish.

The sort of whisky that you finish drinking before you've finished thinking about the whisky. You could just drink lots of this. 3.55/85

Loads of fresh red berries intermingled with orchard fruits and vanilla. Ginger. A little floral. Hint of chocolate. A wonderfully balanced dram let down slightly by a confectionery cherry note on the finish. Thankfully a couple of drops of water mellows the cherry note, though that comes at the expense of a slightly lighter mouthfeel. Wow, this took me by surprise. Delicious.

A nice bottling that bridges the gap between the 10 year old and the 12 year old well. Slightly better and also more complex than the 10 year old, but less complex and full than the 12 year old. The red wine barrels provide that "certain something".
In 2016 I got a bottle for €65 from a dealer in Austria. It now costs almost as much as the 12-year-old. You have to think twice about that... As a supplement, it's quite nice.

Needs warmth to open. Then very nice flowery and fruity. Orange, vanilla, cinnamon, mint, ripe cherries, pickled strawberries and red currants, peach, light oak spice.
    • Taste

Orange, cherry, honey, oak spice, pickled strawberries (here come the red wine barrels...), beeswax, cinnamon and mango.

Medium finish. What remains is a light oiliness with vanilla, cherry and oak spice.

This whisky is a rather non-descript Japanese whisky. BUT... BUT... if you leave it set for an hour or so the nose turns into the richest caramel nose of any whisky I've ever had. Currently I can pick this bottle up for ~110 Euro... and it might be worth it just for the nose.

Decent enough bottling, but not too happy about all those winy notes.

      78 78
Clear red wine notes, plum jam, earthy notes, cherries, strawberries, dried fruits, toffee, leather, lots of fruit marmelades, light furtniture polish. Different, but not great.
    • Taste
      80 80
Light sweetness, different spices, oak and wood spices, nutmeg, dried herbs, especially rosemary, again the winy notes also. Second chew brings a bit more sweetness, sweet pear juice, white fruit, cherries, then a light hint of smoke, tobacco leaves, and spearmint. Also some toffee. Third chew brings ripe banana, bitter banana skins, more smoke, dates. Ultimately too many fresh and dried fruits, it gets quite messy.
    • Finish
      78 78
Semi-dry, warm, still a confusing fruit cocktail, lime syrup, mint, toffee, banana skins. Decent enough, but again, not great.

Nice solid Japanese. In the meantime, however, too expensive for what it offers.
At least for me. But what do I know ...
    • Nose
      87 87
At the beginning nutty aromas, interwoven with plums and red fruits such as B. Cherries. After a while, vanilla and pineapple / kiwi will appear.
    • Taste
      85 85
Slight tingling on the tongue (not unpleasant) the cherry and plum spreads moderately sweet in the mouth. A bit of woody flavor is added without exaggerating.
    • Finish
      85 85
The fruits and the spice linger together for a while, before the fruits then say goodbye and let the wood spice take over the stage with a few sour and bitter tones. I can also perceive a little liquorice next to the fruit. Overall, the aftertaste is medium long.

Japanese whiskies are nowadays either fake or ridiculously expensive, and even NAS expressions like the Yamazaki Distiller's Reserve are hard to find. Fruity, rich and not overtly young, the nose offers papaya, exotic spices and lemon cream, enriched by sandalwood, peach and a floral scent. The arrival has a bit of a nip, but the taste quickly improves with notes of strawberries, grapefruit and menthol. Peppery spices, tannins and evolving dryness from the Bordeaux casks drive the intense finish. It's a very decent dram, although light years behind the 12-year-old.

Comprehensive, very pleasant. Vanilla notes, hint of acetone, freshly sawn board, polish, cotton candy, yellow apples, banana, cardboard, spices (clove?), A little perfume, hint of mint. Over time, closer to the middle of the dram, light wine notes and pickled cucumbers begin to appear. 22

It is above all well balanced. On the one hand, a fairly woody sherry, on the other, wine and earthy fragrances. Some exotic fruits, coconut, papaya, but it remains very discreet. In the mouth, coffee, some chocolate, passion fruit, grassy notes. Sweet spices, thyme, white pepper, nutmeg. Dried fruits, grapes, apricots, figs. A nice, earthy finish, quite long, on dried bananas, liquorice. Heather, truffles, tree bark.

I love the different perspective on a sherry-matured single malt. But… for me it stays too feeble. As if somebody needs to clean the dust of the palate.
    • Nose
      75 75
Surprisingly dusty! There are some red and tropical fruits, but they seem to be covered with dust (!?). In addition, I find notes of white chocolate, hazelnut, lychees, peaches and strawberries, but these are fairly weak. I notice also a bit of sulphur and some vinegar, both not the most agreeable scents. Then fruity red and white wine, maybe even champagne. Overall, the nose is sweet and dusty, and a bit acidic. The fruits never seem to manage to come out on top.
    • Taste
      82 82
Oh, this is better. Salty tea and Japanese spices. The palate is drying, spicy, and slightly smoky. All very pleasant. Notes, well I should say hints, of white chocolate, hazelnuts, peaches and lychees (as in the nose). The cask influence is barely noticeably, which can be good, but in this case a bit more cask influence might have pushed the intensity right up. Nevertheless, the taste supersedes the nose hands down.

    As
with so many of these NAS whiskies, they can’t really mask their relatively low
age entirely. The nose is enticing, but the palate offers too much
cask-infusion with too few counterpoints. Overall still a tasty malt, yet
overprice – like most Japanese whiskies these days.
    • Nose
      Brightly
fruity – mirabelles, pear compote, fresh apple juice (golden delicious or other
sweet ones). Light sherry profile – golden sultanas, ground peanuts, and some
oak. This is a rather fragrant nose. Not bad.
    • Taste
      Sweet
and juicy. The oak is speaking now. There is a miniscule bitterness, with more
caramel and something reminiscent of honeydew and peach. Overall it’s rather
      tasty, but nothing strikingly complex.
    • Finish
      Medium.
Vanilla, mentholated caramel, and more soft tannins.

Elegant, fine nose, vanilla cream, fruit cake, slightly buttered, a little cereal. Not super expressive.

This is an extremely competent malt. In truth, it leans towards the youthful side of balanced but it’s none the worse for it. The wine cask influence keeps things playful and there’s enough spice to beef up the whole experience.
    • Nose
Big sherry and a surprising maturity, given the lack of an age statement. There’s older whisky in here. Strawberries and other red fruits. A certain red wine note with a little prickle of spice.
    • Taste
Echoes the nose. Lively with elements of maturity but there’s a fair amount of youthful character. Strawberries with flashes of black cherry, definite winey note and winter spices humming along underneath.

Honey, some malt, behind it a light woody note. Mainly cute. Later, fresh flowers dominate on one side and heather on the other side.

    Yep, this is quite an
excellent Japanese whisky, that proves yet again that a NAS-bottling is not de
facto lesser whisky. And quite affordable for a dram of the rising sun.
    • Nose
      The nose bursts with
red fruit. Think strawberry, red berries, raspberries and a hint of raisins.
Soft notes of honey and vanilla underscore the sweetness of this nose. Nice
coconut and banana as well. It stands out. Some cloves and a handful of
cinnamon. The Japanese oak also adds a nice floral touch. This is good!
    • Taste
      The palate is very
soft. Silky soft, in fact. Again the vanilla and honey lead a basket full of
fruit. The coconut is more outspoken than the red fruit, of which the
raspberries shine through. Reminds me somewhat of candy floss. The spices are a
bit louder, but certainly not dominant. The oak, however, does become loud
after a few moments, but it certainly does not become oaky. Good balance.
    • Finish
      The finish is
wonderfully long on vanilla and cinnamon.

    • Finish
Long, spicy and again the influence of wood.

This whisky surprised me a lot. Especially discovering the coconut (it is there!) and the subtile but rich flavor (I truly think I just found a few flavors) gives this whisky its strength.
    • Nose
Berries and some sweetness that could fit both honey and raisins and a hint of coconut when you let it reside for a minute.
    • Taste
Coconut! Vanilla, honey and some hints of pure chocolate. Also a 'full ' (oil like fulness) taste. (in Dutch we would call this vettig). Grassy herbs (remindsme of rain on grass)
    • Finish
Nuts, some herbs and vanilla and some wood.

This is an okay whisky, but not very adventurous and most definitely not a game changer. A nice entry-level whisky if you ask me, but at around 50 euro it is rather expensive for that purpose.
    • Nose
Starts of a bit sour with a metal quality and something mineraly (is that a word?).  Then it becomes sweeter with some faint red fruit and something tropical, maybe nectarine and peach. There are also some herbs/spices with coriander and cinnamon. The nose is rather closed though.
    • Taste
Mouthfeel is watery. Fairly sweet, candy-esque almost. Some caramel and marzipan. Then those get washed away by vanilla and wood spices. Cinnamon and nutmeg. Not bad at all, but a little bit boring.
    • Finish
Medium-length finish. Dry, slightly bitter and woody with a hint of chocolate and maybe some smoke, although I'm not completely sure.

  68. Defeatless scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

Smell : Fruit and Sweets. Vanilla, crème brûlée, anise milk, some sawdust and a bit of acid. Little sherry could be good. absolutely no peat. VanNelle orange toffee

Taste : candy. Grassy, bitter nut. Spicy, with over time the acid goes back and there is room for macaroon pudding and other sweets.

Body : medium not too thick not too thin. Slightly alcohol-driven as they call it.

Finish : Sweet pickles, winegum-like. And the bitter comes back again, not unpleasant.

Price: Great price for a whisky far away.

Presentation: Looks good. It is a pity that this is also included in the NAS and that you have to go further research to find out that it consists of 20+ years and 10-year whiskys.

    • Nose

    • Taste
wood smoke, vanilla, pastry, citrus and vanilla
    • Finish
      bitter fruits, nuts and syrup

Blind tasting: HWF VBT6 # 4 Score based in particular on the great nose.
    • Nose
Full! Toffee, salted caramel. Ripe exotic fruit: bananas, pineapple, passion fruit. Honey, almond & walnut. (In a covered glass I smell glue). Somewhere in the distance I smell something that I can not place entirely, or the salted caramel? The sweet lake comes out with water .. Vanilla tea with honey? What a nose !!
    • Taste
Less 'full' than I expected. I recognize the toffee, caramel (yep, including the salt) I also taste the nutty, especially the bitterness from the walnut. Very sweet, especially with some water. But where is the fruit?
    • Finish
Sweet, what goes on in walnut. Then he drops quickly.

Wadis me da jong ?? The second time I tasted it I was happy to discover a few more things. I was already afraid it was me. He remained totally closed the first time (OBE ??). The second time already a lot less. I still give him 80 pts because of the reasonably complex and interesting nose. Unfortunately, he does not know what to expect and finish.
    • Nose
1st attempt: euhmm ... euhmmm, hello scents? Anybody home??
2nd attempt: euhmm .... ow, hey here we go: cereals, malt, a bit of citrus (stupid whisky needs a lot of time!), Freshly baked bread and after adding 2 drops of water a bit of flowers. But it still works damn hard to get everything out!
    • Taste
1st attempt: euhmm ... euhmm, hello taste? Anybody home?? WTF do we get now? That's the first time that I can not describe an iota of the nose and the taste. I do not get anything. Is this again such a pale blend or something?
2nd attempt: euhmm ... aha, quite a few grains and malt again (again no Lowlander, eh?), Hay, a little bit of citrus, a little pepper and that's it. Fat if you ask me. (43% ??)
    • Finish
      1st attempt: euhmm ... euhmm, hello aftertaste ... drank ... onk ...?
2nd attempt: pretty short, but I can not describe much too much for the rest.

My first experience of Japanese whisky and one that I certainly enjoyed. On the negative side, the bottle has deteriorated quite quickly; within 4 months.
    • Nose
Initially strawberry, but almost sugary like strawberry laces.  Floral notes. Almost a brandy sweetness. Possibly some coconut.
    • Taste
Dried berries, raspberries, spice, some vanilla.
    • Finish
Medium-long finish of spice with vanilla lingering and becoming more pronounced.

The youthfulness of this detracts sllightly, but it's not serious. It is an extremely well made whisky and shows once again the skill with which Japanese whiskies are put together. I could drink this all night, but sadly I've finished it.
    • Nose
The usual slightly light and spirity, but delightfully complex nose of Yamazaki before it becomes venerable. The fruit and flowers play against the background of a truly well made spirit. This is clearly quite young but it has class nonetheless.
    • Taste
The clean spirit frames the cask influence beautifully. There's a melting fruity caramel that dissolves on the tongue. leaving drying sugars and spices behind. Yummy.
    • Finish
Now the casks come into their own, full of charming sugars and soft spices.

This is a surprisingly complex whisky, made to showcase the younger Yamazaki spirits. It has American, European and Japanese oak matured whisky.

A very interesting whisky, with a varied palette of scents and flavors that can still be found in subtle shades of different flavors.
    • Nose
A lot of honey, malt and fresh fruit, citrus and perhaps coconut, all with the addition of sweet spices. Very pleasant and juicy aroma. In a blind test, I would tip something from Highland, Oban, Glen Garioch or Glen Ord attack me. (87 b)
    • Taste
Malt taste, sweet, with a little pepper, a little sherry. Woody chocolate flavor, no bitterness. (83 b)

  78. KayMeertens scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

The nose is pretty interesting, but the general impression is rather disappointing. 83/84.
    • Nose
Red apple, caramel, blueberry, raspberry, citrus and vanilla. A slightly
spicy meaty touch. After a while the profile changes towards banana,
lime, honey, vanilla and a little peach.
    • Taste
Toffee, bramble, pepper, apple peel, orange, overripe tropical fruit, mint, chocolate
and a little smoke. A weird spiciness... saffran?
    • Finish
Toffee, blueberry, pepper, chocolate, apple, mint and spice.

Heavy wood influence, that is for sure. If wood spices are your thing - this malt is for you. It clearly does not handle water well, so do not add any.
On its own merit it is not a bad whisky especially at the price it is being sold in Bulgaria, but it is not anything special either. Very forgettable. Put into the context of the stock shortages at the distillery it is evident that this was a tool workaround the lack of 12yo spirit for their flagship. I guess we will brace ourselves with this kind of Japanese engineered whiskies till they have enough mature spirits for the core range. I had it head-to-head with the 12yo (which in general is not my favourite dram) and DE won on first impression but the lack of development, rather regression, soon showed how much better is the 12yo.
    • Nose
Gentle vanilla sweetness; wood scent; some confectionery and perfume notes; nutmeg.
The alcohol can be felt when freshly poured in the glass. There should be some pretty young distillate inside.
All in all the nose is fresh and vibrant but lacking development.
With water - a faint soapiness emerges, which fades with time. some nutty notes surfaces.
    • Taste
Less sweet on the palate than the nose. Rather savoury profile; lots of black pepper.
With water - very week, some nougat, citrus and bitter oranges. But the whole has completely lost its tightness.
    • Finish
short to medium; drying with pepper being the prominent dryness; with water even more drying.

Not impressed by this. The nose at first is nice but it vaporizes quick. the taste is very mild and after 30 minutes in glass it really felt apart. I got peaty finish after that.

Its engineered malt, and probably very young one. you better off with the 12 years old yamazaki

There are three main ingredients in this single malt :

A "young talent" :  whiskies less than 10 year old complementary matured during 6 months in french oak casks, called wine casks used for the maturation of french red wine from Bordeaux Château Lagrange.
An old whisky aged around 20 years in sherry casks, to bring depth and maturity.
A young whisky aged in japanese oak casks, the very rare mizunara casks to enrich the flavors with a japanese spicy note. Today, those precious casks represent only about 1 % of the Suntory's stock of casks.

Bottled at 43% ABV, Yamazaki Distiller's Reserve expresses notes of dried fruit and strawberry typical of the distillery, but also a surprising maturity from sherry casks, and originality sweet notes from the wine casks.
