Air has improved it a lot.
Just emptied a bottle which had been opened for years and last dram was certainly the best.
This Springer doesn't needs water because it's not warming, but adding just a little drop does enhance the coastal/salty element (and therefore distillery character).
I would bet there are Manzanilla casks involved, this really is on the dry side, which is absolutely fine for me.

Batch 8 from 2014 seems earthy and substantial. Leather, tobacco, aromatic smoke, dark mature fruits soaked in cognac. Like sinking into an armchair in a gentleman’s club. More active spicy oak. The peats less obvious and it feels a little “older”. Even a little baby vomit - not in a bad way!!

  4. cfosterk scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Compared to batch 5 this is much earthier and more substantial. Feels older? Leather, tobacco (pipe), dark mature fruits soaked in cognac, Some quite spicy oak and pretty opulent. Smoked horse manure!!

On the palate syrupy sweet and sour. powerful peat base/undertones, liquorice root, tropical fruits on mango and ripe peach, Red fruits, fuller than batch 5 and no alcohol prickle at full strength,

    Very good batch -

Very tasty whisky. The alcohol is well integrated, despite 52.3% it is not at all spicy.

    I did a comparing between batch 8, 10 & 11.

Compared to batch 10 and 11, batch 8 is: More metallic, more oily, has thick vanilla, more red fruits, and less honey on the nose. It's more oily, more earthy and thicker than on the taste. The finish is longer, less drying and less bitter.

I like this one the best of those three.

A bit sweeter and fruitier than previous batches.

It changes a lot once opened. improves.

Nose is complex, slight peat notes, sherried.

Mouth is full of yellow fruits with hint of Orange marmelade.`Sherried without any sulfur.

    Balance is excellent.

It's like this 12 yo was older.

    Very very good.

This batch is also very successful. A very nice, unagitated malt.
    • Nose
The nose is fresh and fruity. Sympathetic first impression that makes you want to look more closely at the flavors. Fruits include apricots and peaches. In addition, a very light hint of peat blows through the glass. Something salty sea breeze, maybe a little heather herbs. Overall, a very pleasant and balanced nose.
    • Taste
The sweet peaches and apricots from the nose have the precedence on the tongue and fill the whole mouth. In addition, there are notes of milk chocolate and vanilla. Mild spices come with the times and become stronger, light saltiness comes. Wild herbs. Light oak aroma.
    • Finish
The finish is long, barely dry, with notes of apricot, wild herbs and a slightly tingling saltiness.

    • Nose
w/o water - Complex. Soury peat (not peat-smoke!). farmyard (manure) sweet of summer flowers. metallic. briny.
w/ water - Complex, milk chocolate sweet, savoury herbs, fresh summer fruit.
    • Taste
w/o water - sweet arrival of oranges. immediate dry and hot development of sweet oranges.
w/ water - hesitant, sweet arrival. The development is long and warm with sweet smoke ending into citrus bittersweet.
    • Finish
w/o water - beautiful soury finish. After this the nose is fantastic.
w/ water - long, dry citrus finish.

Nose: Hint of smoke, damp ceilings, tropical fruit. A classic Springbank nose. Wit water more tropical fruit

Taste: Sweet, kiwi, some orange, wet cardboard note. Lovely tropical taste with water.

    Body: Full and oily

Finish: Long: wood, hint of smoke, some bread.

Price: A very good price for it's quality.

Presentation: Sober but that is perfect, let the spirit tell the story.

Pretty heavy whisky that takes a while to develop. Pretty complex.
    • Nose
Low-key sherry, light caramel note, mild chocolate.

If he can breathe something sea salt and a light sweetness.
    • Taste
Mild, then fiery, anise on the tongue, which slowly turns into dark chocolate.
    • Finish
      Spicy, bitter chocolate, slightly dry.

  28. Owidram scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Color is nice, copper like; looks like an older whisky but 12.

Nose is stunning: you feel barley, wax, and very well balanced sherry notes. It is complex and evolutive.

Initial taste: Spices, cinnamon, Chocolate, Orange marmelade, you feel you need to let air do the job and be patient.

Body is very balanced, kind of thin, not overpower full, and alcohol seems perfectly integrated.

Finish: is very nice but I wish it was longer. Peaty notes are very nice here.

Well worth its price: Very elegant and balanced whisky.

I wish I had more of this one for old days.

Pretty close to batch 6, but the flavors are more present I think. A little extra sweetness, too. Very good quality.

(note made in the context of a face-to-face meeting between batches 6, 7, 8, and 10)
    • Nose
Very close to batch 6, but a little more powerful nevertheless. Light dry smoke, raisins, and woody honey. Some sweet spices.
    • Taste
A basket of dried fruits (grapes and apricots in the head) with honey. A bit of spicy spices.
    • Finish
Slightly dry. Peppery explosion, dry smoke. A little peppermint that refreshes the mouth.

  33. Sandman scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Wow this is a great dram full complexity. I enjoyed this one very much!
    • Taste
Fudge, seasalt, hints of medicinal notes, bit of peat, oily, nutmeg and green herbs
    • Finish
Long, fruity, peppery hints and a bit of peat

  34. Kantenmechaniker scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

A very heavy whisky, which leaves a positive impression.
    • Nose
Sherry with a very subtle touch of sulfur notes (I seem to be sensitive), milk chocolate with caramel pieces, orange
    • Taste
fruity sweet, at the beginning again light sulfur, which quickly vanishes, you feel warm the alcohol, then comes back to the chocolate
    • Finish
      rather spicy and dry, Mittellan

    SGP: 555
    • Nose
Starts on engine oil followed by a medicinal aroma. Light sweetness emerges. To the nose was not sweet to begin with
Water: Here is the sweetness - fig jam
      More water: sweet grass.
    • Taste
What a fantastic rich flavour. Very nutty, wood spice, cedar box. The medicinal notes from the nose are present.
Water: Different mouth feel now - more oily and chewy. It is not so fruity as the 10yo in the mouth.
    • Finish
      medium long finish

  36. Corso_theRed scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

This is simply satisfying whisky. It has something for everybody and
manages to shine in terms of balance and flavor composition. After
having tasted the 10yo a while back in a bar, this is my second
Springbank and I must say, damn good stuff Sir. Dilution is not really
needed, as the alcohol is very well integrated, but it does take water
very very well. I accidently “drowned” a dram of this a few weeks ago,
and it still retained most of its character.
    • Nose
Sweet and sour, with a profound creaminess which I have never noticed
like this before. Mild warm smoke, like salted butter melted over cedar
wood. The sherry is there, but very mannered. Suggesting from the rather
light color, either the refill was very exhausted, or the first-fill
did not contain oloroso, but rather lighter variants. Manzanilla
perhaps? Cotton candy, malt, and a little later there is a good measure
of roasted coffee beans and finally, leather.
    • Taste
The arrival is very balanced in terms of sweet and dry. Followed by lots
of vanilla and salted cream toffee. Different strokes of dried fruit,
such as raisins, banana slices, and oranges. The peat level is
relatively low, which in my book is a good thing.
    • Finish
Rather long, with sweet wood spice and very little bitterness. Licorice, vanilla, and a pleasant smokiness paint the finish.

  37. brendanh scored this whisky 87 points Newbie

For me this batch 8 (52.3%) kicks off on the nose with sherried fruits and orange peel, and then gives away to nutty fudge. This follows through to the palate where the sherried fruits quite quickly give way to delicious butter and nutty fudge, with just a hint of smoke in the tail and a slightly waxy finish. The fudgy chracter is particularly present with just a touch of water, this whisky does not need much despite being at cask strength. Delicious highly drinkable whisky, but with some density and chewy-ness. I get the most amazing buttery mouthfeel. The finish is perhaps too short to score into the 90s, but apart from that its one of my ablosute favourite drams. I don't get much of the red or dark fruits others express in tasting notes.

Clearly more sherry casks involved in this batch than in previous ones. Quite different, but definitely one of the best batches so far.
    • Nose
Quite a lot of spicy sherry. Toffee, prune, peach, mocha, cherry, blood orange, nutmeg and liquorice. With water a little porridge.
    • Taste
Prune, mocha, cherry, clove, grapefruit, vanilla, liquorice and smoke. With water some mango.
    • Finish
Prune, cocoa, cherry, clove, pepper, grapefruit and a little peat ash.
