Whisky Reviews for Bowmore 12-year-old
8 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 89.27 points
- A non-standard but very interesting molt, many industrial derivatives, but everything is very clearly written into the big picture, quite complex and deep, and it also adds to the development, enriched with chocolate and cream tones.
Open, wet, the first nose - berry jam, old leather goods and very little smoke; mineral and metallic notes - raw tin, whetstone, steel tools, metal shavings; vegetable shades, frying oil, pipe tobacco, berry tones in the background.
Dense, oily, oak, grain, coffee, nuts, mineral-metallic notes, sulfur tones, cola, sweet syrup tones, light smoky peat flavor, toffee, creamy motifs, chocolate.
Spicy, warming, mineral-metallic, lemon peel in tea, cola, unsweetened cocoa, tobacco leaf, old skin, faint notes of peat and smoke.
- Very satisfying, very subtle and complex.
It is very special - his wood aromas are very unusual for me.
Yes! A great and old dram!
Tasting June 2016.
Have to do a new tasting note after the Whisky has spent much time breathing in the bottle and after having some medium experiences with it!
The beginning remains a little strange: A lot of old nuts and dry wood combined with bio mass at the beach and some salty air.
Then join step by step citrus aromas with hints of marmalade and even some fruit brandies.
After swirling the glass the Whisky begins to unfold.
Citrus aromas, disinfectant with strange peat and peppery dry wood; peaty pig-hair, then some caramel starts to rise and it gets more by the second. Hints of leather-chocolate comes through and also some honey. After that tropical fruits are emerging in form of old rum-jams and even pure (maybe slightly fermented). Fruit liquors, very grassy peat underneath (more pure grass than something smoky). Everything is in combination with old nuts and herbal citrus. Malt, leather, hints of chocolate - all of these slightly salted.
Nut-liqueur and mango-liqueur at the same time.
Old barn with an uncleaned eating table. Hints of old carpet (slightly dusty) and distant impressions of vanilla-citrus cream mixed with some eau de cologne. Later also clear briny notes together with nut-chocolate.
Very round, delicate and sensitive.
Very sweet beginning with nuts, wooden work bench (oily), smooth sweet marmalade, honey, peppery and grassy peat, some smoke with 'Pril' cleaning, Hazelnut liqueur, then more old citrus, some spiced caramel, hints of sweetened coffee, hints of chocolate covered passion fruits and mangos, old books, slightly dusty again with the old carpet, some rum-nougat. Salt water comes in late but strong with sea-impressions, very old wood with hints of Bergamot/eau de cologne.
Old casks, very peppery and salty wood with honey and fresh mangos. Tangerines, orange peel, grassy leather, and some hot notes (nut liqueur, fruit liquor), more tropical fruits - really some pure fruits, old wood, leathery malt interwoven with the grass/peat, salt again.
Old nut shells in an old and dry Sherry cask with some rum-fruits in it, chocolate, some pralines (alcohol), new and freshly-oiled working tools, old citrus tingling with the cask - also with an old fruit sweetness and hints of honey and Demerara. Hints of minestrone also.
- What a wonderful Whisky from earlier times ...
Should be from the 70s.
I was surprised by the amount of chocolate - and the creamy aspects.
Very good first tasting to the beginning of the holidays with Armin Fuchs and some friends (one of them loves hazelnuts!) on 30th July 2015.
First the aroma is sourish and briny with some peated apples and cigars. Some shoe polish and a lot of untreated leather are joining and also some cooked vegetables (kohlrabi ...).
The peat is flowing into the (dry) wood as if they were the same.
After swinging the glass a sudden development takes place and the Whisky opens up and shows itself.
First lemon juice, 'peat-leather' and tingling 'honey-peat', then cherry jam which is also leathery-peaty and sweet. Impressions of wide peat-fields (with the Bowmore-character).
Then emerges a intense noble milk-chocolate that will stay in the aroma for the rest of the time ... with some mocha-cream, hazelnut-cream and in the background (and some in the surrounding) there are fruit liquors. Chocolate and jam are melting together.
Impressions of Nutella-bread (not so much Nutella). Warm orange juice and somewhere there are sour pickled cucumbers ...
There are some 'Wiebele' (small bisquits), chocolate covered raisins and some wood glue.
Aroma ... like hazelnut-chocolate cream, cherries and straw smudged in a leather bag.
Chocolate, brine, brandy beans, citrus, sweet and aromatic peat, leather, cherry juice, warm orange juice, 'old' scouring powder (with wonderful impressions of some old Sherry casks), some honey, very pleasant fire-place, some cherry jam, again feelings of the old casks with fruit liquors, the wood is as well soft and tart-rough in its shadings. Leather-peat, sweet malt.
The Sherry casks are rising up with tart and old wood and peat, everything permeated by some wonderful marzipan. Dry scouring powder, chocolate and cherry jam (some impressions of 'Domino Steine' ... ).
Smokey salon with cognac in the glasses as well as an old parquet and a library. Intense and warm. Wood, alcohol-quince jelly (maybe vodka), chocolate-covered raisins and very dry but creamy. Also some wood barks and some resin.
