Thiis is a one trick pony, it is all front loaded and once you get through the zesty fruit notes mixed with honey there is very little else worthy of note.

I like the sweetness but it lacks balance for me but t.here are parts of it i like and it is nice to try a first fill bourbon from HP because they are so different.

Vanilla, chamomilla, honey, pears, herbs (not floral), ginger, cherry, quite firm and closed.
    • Taste

Strong, oaky, more fruits, lots of spices, mouthwatering, thick, fatty, nutmeg, almonds, honey, no pears here but more melon and citrus. Quite well made.
    • Finish
      84 84
Spicy but not that much acidity so it stays very well balanced. Med-long final. Woody.

It’s not my favorite as I generally like a more smoky expression, but I am glad to have tried it. While it is and was far too expensive for what it offers, this is a light and bright and refreshing dram. Quite well suited to a warmer climate.
    • Nose
      79 79
Very light. Vanilla, grapefruit (faint). A hoppy quality I’ve come to associate with lighter Highland Parks.

    Aroma:
Beguiling with fruit and vanilla, a hint of smoke and oak, spices, slightly “vinous”, aromatic and very appealing.

    Taste:
With start, warm, full, sweet, spicy, with smoke and oak, spices (clove?)
No fabric softener, albeit a little different and a little more feminine than usual.
The alcohol is very well integrated, does not need water ...

    Departure:
Soft with smoke and sweetness, oriental spices, minimal tart oak note, balanced and slightly malty finish.

    Tasty but also expensive ...

A delicious HP from the first-fill Bourbon Cask, fine, elegant, but also a bit fleeting. (I like the Cask Orkney in comparison but better.)
    • Nose
      87 87
Grapefruit, light honey, a mini track of smoke, abrasion of lemon, star fruit, jasmine flowers, minimally alcoholic in the nose, freshly cut beech hedge, ginger, pebbles on the beach, almond cream, linseed oil
    • Taste
      86 86
light, watery-spicy, ginger, pepper, dark chocolate, grapefruit, star fruit, light honey, candied ginger, lemon confectionery, jasmine black tea, almond cream
    • Finish
      85 85
medium-length, spicy, fine-sweet, grapefruit, candied ginger, jasmine black tea, slightly astringent, slightly fine-smoky, at the end comes even bergamot

Style: Green Fruits, Oaky and Spicy

    Nose:

Peppermint arrowhead stringing a thin thread of lemon honey heather behind. Raw but reasonably fragrant tropical fruits, followed by an unexpected blot of sooty peat. Once it opens up pineapple panna cotta gently dusted with icing sugar comes in focus. Black and white peppercorn, a light briny end to it.

    Palate:

A rather white pepper driven start on the palate. Starfruits, oak-infused barley, green tropical fruits and lemon aloe vera jelly. Almost metallic at some point. Peat smoke churning lightly, sea salt, followed by a spicy spike, peppermint, chilli seeds and ginger shreds. Wood shavings, chocolate malt, it is surprisingly bitter. Minimal mango sweetness, chocolate malt and nutmeg to finish.

    Finish:

More nutmeg, black and white pepper sprinkled all over guava and subtle fruity sweetness.

    Thoughts:

A surprisingly green and spicy Highland Park here, plenty of oak as well. Not a usual HP which is generally less dry and juicer. I didn’t enjoy this profile too much, maybe I was wrong to presume the goddess of love have to be something sweet? But instead we got something on the other side of the spectrum. I guess it is a curve ball whisky that some might find it interesting. Borderline tick, maybe?

Bourbon barrels and Highland Park are a perfect match. Next to Full Volume and The Light again an example of this.
    • Nose
At first very restrained, a delicate flowery freshness and sweetness rise towards me. After about twenty minutes fresh lime, mint and a distinct hint of vanilla, accompanied by fresh coconut water. The longer the whisky stands and breathes, the more coastal character comes through, gentle spray and a hint of smoke. After another ten minutes you can still feel white tea, fresh lavender and green apple. Diluted: notes of roasted malt, aromatic-tender smoke and mango
    • Taste
Unexpectedly peppery spicy. Sweet-sour pickled ginger and fresh leaves soften the whole thing immediately and the fresh character from the nose returns. Lemon abrasion and green plum, but also oatmeal cookies, herbal hay and sparkling spicy wood. Diluted: chewy, creamy and very malty. A pleasant blend of aromatic spices settles in the mouth
    • Finish
long, dry, with bitter oranges and tender honey

  11. ctu scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Great HP, bourbon maturing and high ABV is good, thought it's overpriced!
    • Nose
Sweet Peat, citruses, honey, tropical fruits and menthol.
    • Taste
Powerful. Spicy oak, orange peel, pear, yellow apple and touch of smoke.
    • Finish
      Long, spicy, smoky, sour.

My least favourit of the Valhalla serie. Would not have been noticed as something special without the packaging. But as the godess in the serie the profile is suiting.
    • Nose
Very light, fresh and fruity on the nose.

Citrus and apples. Some vanilla and a little heather peat.
    • Taste
Quite rough on the attack compared to the gentle nose.

      Hot spice, citric, almost acidic.

Turning towards gentler notes of grain and grass.
    • Finish
Medium+ lenght with drying and bitter tanins.

  14. Gris scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

A different HP, rather elegant and surprising in the range Valhalla, probably the charm of the feminine touch brought by Freya.
    • Nose
A very sweet nose, more than what Highland Park could get used to. Especially pear and a little tropical side. Minty touches. Strong vanilla is also present. Peat and a seaside side also.
    • Taste
Like the nose, very fruity. Apples and biscuity touches. Spices too. And light peat.
    • Finish
Long finish, always fruity and with sweet peat smoke.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose:
Chamomile, orange, papaya, leather strips, grapefruit, peach, pine,
pear skin, cardamom, fruity smoke and a touch of heather. White
    chocolate and freeze-dried strawberries.
Palate: Woody and fragrant pear. Starfuit too. Smoke, orange peel and proper Turkish delight.
Finish: Smoky with a hint of tin, drying at full strength. Apricot and spices.
Overall: Freya, 'The Fair One', Goddess of Love - seductive, subtle, each sip leaves you wanting just a little more.

The bourbon casks are very obvious in this dram. For me it is almost to Bourbonny. The whisky is mouth coating and seems to have a quite direct and honest delivery of flavours. I find the nose much more seductive than the palate and the finish. The floral tones on the nose are lovely and delicate. On the palate it seems a bit too much bourbon for me. Al in al it’s an engaging dram that leaves me a bit divided.

A fresh, fruity, powerful, pungent, full and rough whisky with aroma’s of apple peels, lemon zest, pepper, hot ginger, nutmeg, green leaves, oak sap, fresh oak shavings, (over)ripe pear, Turkish delight, orange blossom water, nougat (but without the nuts), hint of cardamom, white wine, marshmallows, new leather, cereals, biscuit’s, hay, grassy tones, unripe mango, a hint of green mint and just a trace of smoke.

    • Nose
Vanilla, honey, soft tropical fruit, mandarin and lime. With water: wooded area
    • Taste
Refreshing, apples, pears, orange, vanilla, pepper and a bit of wet grass
    • Finish
Long, citrus, little oak and a touch of herbs

This was very fresh and light on the nose, and the HP peat only came through after adding some water. Good but qualitywise on the same level as the HP18 I had in a glass next to it (I actually prefer the 18)  so I can't really find any justification for the original retail price.

Easy, accessible whisky. Smoke, peat and especially vanilla. Taste goes towards fruits and especially the citrus department, not wrong. Unfortunately I miss the maturity in years, can not describe it properly but there is a lack of spriit. I certainly enjoyed this party, the packaging is of course phenomenal. all compliments, that's how you present Whisky !!!!!

  25. Hemdl scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Very nice and quite usable for nice evenings. Judging by the prices but - for me - definitely more collector's item than Genusswhisky. There is a certain "something" that makes him stand out from the crowd and I had several other HP (mostly UA) in the glass, which are quite close to this malt or cut him out.
    • Nose
Vanilla and many green fruits and citrus flavors, from the typical smoke of a Highland Park little to no trace. Very fresh, but also unspectacular. That could be a young Speysider at first.
After some time in the glass, a clear cinnamon note comes to the fore. I like that again!
    • Taste
Here, the malt is stronger, the cask strength owed. Strong on the tongue, here comes directly from the slight smoke and shows that here a Highland Park was filled. Next to it again the green fruits and some spicy vanilla.
    • Finish
Towards the end and on the finish then pepper, slightly spicy / bitter oak notes. The sweet vanilla is barely noticeable.

He is even worse than the Loki.
    • Nose
Very light, smoke I can not get out, a little mint and citrus. Very weak in the nose.
    • Taste
Malty, sweet, then a bit bitter and peppery.
Behind the small peppery note there is a bit of mint.
    • Finish
It is slightly bitter and not at all long. And I have a slight glue Fehlnote in the finish.

  27. TastyDram did not rate this whisky Expert Junior

Freya cannot be compared to the previous installments, but she's not less complex. A bit of an atypical Highland Park, but one that can proudly enter the halls of Valhalla.
    • Nose
Plenty of vanilla when nosing this the first time. A delicious panna cotta with white chocolate and vanilla seeds. Eventually it evolves to a walk through the forest after a rainstorm. Lots of damp earthy and green notes. And you're having a glass of hot spiced wine. Eucalyptus and pine candy. Sweet nuts and citrus fruits. Mandarin and lime to me.
    • Taste
Very refreshing. Definitely another breed than Loki and Thor. Again eucalyptus, vanilla and mint. A juicy fruitiness. Oranges, Conference pears and green apples. On the back of the tongue there are traces of wood smoke and pepper.
    • Finish
Quite long. Spicy but still soft. Apples and sweet cinnamon.

    • Taste
Sweet with mangos, vanilla and caramel, green tea, some basil and hay, baked pineapple, Ardbeg sweetness for a short moment! Just magnificent
    • Finish
Long with citrus, mild oak and some herbs

  31. klohmann scored this whisky 87 points Expert Junior

I rather liked this one, but mostly because it’s different, even though this also makes your eyebrows raise at times. Thor is still my favourite.

    from whiskynotes.be
    • Nose
Quite honeyed for a HP, with juicy pear, melon, pink grapefruit and a soft tropical touch of papaya. A lot of vanilla. Soft heathery notes and a little mint. There’s something more pungent (ashy / peaty) in the background. A subtle coastal note too.
    • Taste
Quite fruity again. Apple, lemon pie, going towards biscuity notes. Some fresh oaky notes with accompanying spices (ginger, pepper). Some uncommon flavours as well: cardamom, something plastic-like, pine sap, lemongrass… Strangely bitter-sour in places, but there’s still a tropical edge (coconut) at the same time.
    • Finish
Long, still ‘green’ and zesty, even slightly perfumy, with very soft peat smoke.

  32. littlebuzzed did not rate this whisky Expert Junior

Having only tried about 30 different whiskies, I'd consider myself a developing rookie...and this one puzzled me as it is unlike anything I have tried before. Something like Talisker meets Tobermory for a drink on Islay.

That's all I got. It's good, it's unique, and by the time it will arrive in Canada, It will sadly out of my price range (considering that Thor was $249 and Loki is still available at $299).
    • Nose
Honey, vanilla, papaya, green fruits, ocean sea breeze, ashes, slight smoke
    • Taste
More vanilla, eucalyptus, leather, more smoke, fully coats the mouth, pepper
    • Finish
      bitter, drying, peaty smoke stays

A very nice addition to the Valhalla collection.

    (Rating interval 85-88p)
    • Nose
Clean and fresh on the nose, turpentine, dill, oak, jasmine, green apples and vanilla. some green tea even.
    • Taste
Powerful delivery with bitter-sour jelly candy, marshmallows, black pepper, oil paint, artificial pear flavor, exotic fruits with hints of coconut.
    • Finish
The finish is long and a bit sour, again black pepper and lime zest balanced by beautiful peat.

The barley for this whisky was malted on the mainland with mainland
peat. Then it was matured nearby Glasgow in bourbon casks. Normally this
kind of whisky is produced for the blenders but the casks for this
bottling were too good  to be used in a blend.

  37. Drochaid scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Producer's NotesColour: The Fair One, golden.
Aroma: Almond and Madagascan vanilla shimmer in the
distance like the Aurora Borealis. White chocolate followed by candied
cherries makes way for a vibrant wave of mango and melon, riding upon a
    cloud of cream soda.
Taste: The heart of this whisky shines like a jewel,
surrounded by fragrant peat. Orange peel, butterscotch and rose petals
provide the sweetness along with orange blossom and ginger. Lively
popping candy, lemongrass and tropical fruits are lightly shrouded in
    peat smoke.
Finish: Complex and beautiful, yet balanced and
considered like Freya herself, the finish gives lingering spice and soft
peat smoke intertwined with soft orchard fruits, toasted coconut and a
light char, providing a rounded depth and allowing this whisky to soar.
