Whisky Reviews for Caol Ila 1984 CA

7 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 89.88 points

  1. Ras Mazunga scored this whisky 92 points Super Administrator

Most remarkable is the cinnamon I can smell so obviously. And then there's the medicinal/cough syrup taste. In between these extremes I agree with all tasting notes below.
    Amazing Caol Ila!

  2. Bishlouk scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

Very complex, suave, calm, rustic. "Gentleman countryman" would fit him well as a description to define it in two words. No aggressiveness, all finesse.
    • Nose
As he first bites into the nostrils, directly after pouring the dram, it is better to let him breathe a few moments. Then, the smells of lemon zest, hot ash smoke, heather and wild mushrooms follow each other and telescope. A little resinous wax thereafter. After about ten minutes, the nose becomes calm and becomes more linear.
    • Taste
The texture is very oily, oily; it lines the mouth. Ashes and hot stones. Apricot and pineapple creep in. Citrus jam (but it's only slightly tart). Some resinous hints.
    • Finish
Average. Ashes warm up in the throat, while pepper salutes the palate. Black buttered mushrooms fill the mouth.

  3. Falnor scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

Tasted it next to the Ardmore of the small batch serie. Loved that one, but this is a whole other level! It's true that you can't go wrong with old Caol Ila, but with prices this high you sure want to know if it's worth it.

The nose, bingo! Fruit, sweet old fruit that is warming and balance out the smoke and alcohol. If you just want peat, buy something young. Oranges, vanilla, chocolate, peach, spices, campfire on the beach. You can easily drift away on this one.

Bought it for my brother in law and we will open this bottle in feb. 2014 when my son will be born.

Tasting Notes from Mark Watt (WM Cadenhead):

Nose: Orange zest, sweet smoke, pickles, white chocolate and sweet paprika.

Palate: More spice and orange oils. Growing smoke and sesame oil. A big mouth coating whisky.

Finish: Big oily fruitiness gives way to growing dry smoke, cracked black pepper and a touch of praline.
