Whisky Reviews for Karuizawa 1999 SMWS 132.5

  1. sagara-kun scored this whisky 92 points Expert Senior

It is a rather extreme Karuizawa. A sherry pushed in its entrenchment. Complex enough for his age. Alcohol is very well integrated. A great success that deserves the effort to decipher everything.
    • Nose
A rather enormous aromatic concentration. We are in the big sherry bomb. And they probably left sherry at the bottom of the drum? Many red fruits, blackberries and figs mainly. A side a little porto. Many nuts. From the waffle to dark chocolate. How often wood. The whole is wrapped in a light layer of camphor. We also have a whole dimension smoked and meaty, barbecue bacon that comes out at times. With the evolution, the camphor is transformed a little into listerine and the fruits fade a little. The nose evolves enormously and is very changeable.
    • Taste
In the mouth, we have above all a little suffering. Just like the nose, it's a sherry bomb. A good dose of red fruit, with the acidity of blueberry But also candy, molasses and a little soy sauce. A good dose of leather and wood (old furniture) without astreingence.
    • Finish
The finish is long and on the port. Flambé red fruits stay very long. Some caramel and wood are also present, and a slightly smoky bacon aroma remains in the mouth.

    SMWS UK Tasting Panel:

The sweet, dark nose was satanically beguiling –
Demerara dregs in espresso, molasses, honeyed figs, flapjacks,
blackjacks, sweet black tea and dark chocolate, eucalyptus, and pencil
shavings came later. The palate – a salty, treacly, mouth-watering
assault of tarry tobacco, Garibaldis, thick orange peel, balsamic glaze
and black bean sauce – squeaked the teeth and found the tannic in
Satanic. The reduced nose became more savoury – jugged hare with prunes
and hickory-smoked ribs. The palate had less tannic thrash but remained
sweetly sinister, with hoisin duck and a well-used leather tawse
sacrificed in the glowing embers of hell. The distillery was once a
    vineyard.

    Sweet and darkly beguiling
    Colour: Dr Peppers
    CASK NO. 132.5

Nose: Bovril, horlicks...big alcohol....almost like an alcoholic Bonox gravy! Roasted beef knuckle (i.e. the caramelised joint) with darkly roasted garlic. Big sherry, but with a shade and context quite unlike what Scotland’s whiskies have made us accustomed to. There’s a hint of musk; also mulled wine or red wine jus. Perhaps also some Tia Maria ?

Palate: Great sherry, great oak, and yummy Tia Maria notes! Tastes like it has serious age on it! Simply rich and delicious, with buckets of texture. Old chestnut furniture, old malt, port wine, kopico lollies....a terrific combination of malt, oak, sweetness, sherry, and alcohol.

Finish: ”One of the best finishes i can recall!” wrote AD, elaborating further with, “So immensely big, yet clean, satisfying, soothing, and insanely long”. Other comments for the finish included ginger snaps and balsamic reduction.

Comments: This is a big sherry bomb that is amazingly fused with a vast array of roast beef and gravy notes. The palate is almost without peer - so clean, fruity, sweet, spicy, and powerful that it defies comparison. Fans of Glenfarclas, Aberlour A’bunadh, and Glendronach will find much to enjoy here. Be careful though - you might switch allegiances from the Saltire to the Circle of the Sun! it tastes a lot older than its relatively youthful 14 years.
