Good, but not one of the best smoked whisky

This is better than Black Label, particularly if you like smokier character, but it’s still very much in that vein. I’d much prefer if this were the bottle most bars had rather than the standard, but it’s not something I’d want to order other than when I’m forced to order Black Label based on lack of options. I don’t know that I’ll buy this again unless I find myself wanting to stock some options for guests not as into whisky as I, but still have it be something I would drink. Letting it sit a while increases the smokiness a good deal and would bump the score up a few points.

    77 – 79 (C+) = Average – not good, not bad, just is
There might be some minor flaws, all-in-all it’s not offensive, but it might be boring. There’s just nothing at all noteworthy about this whiskey.

Note: looses smokiness half way in the bottle

  5. Xaver did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

    • Nose
Medical smoke, but not overloaded. Some caramel. A light citrus note. Liquorice with a hint of pepper. Overall, pretty soft.
    • Taste
Smokier than the nose pretends. A little lemon and an intense hint of licorice. Slightly bitter with this hint of pepper. A touch of vanilla.
    • Finish
Medium. Smoky and a bit bitter.

  7. drkrylov scored this whisky 79 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
Smoky and slightly medicinal, hints of citrus and a sweetness.
    • Taste
Rich and full. A slight grain note, black pepper comes through with a peated edge.
    • Finish
      Short, sweet. Fades quickly.

An interesting alternative to Johnnie Walker Black Label, but certainly not a replacement.  It is intense, but smooth.  Basically this is an “amplified” version of Black Label, with the charred wood smokiness intensified.  Still, I noticed a distinctive youthfulness in the grain whisky, and Double Black confirms this by not having an age statement, unlike its 12 Year Old famous sibling.  It’s good, but not worth $45.
    • Nose
Intense smoke and charred wood, with some spicy notes.
    • Taste
Very smoky, with more peat and charcoal.  It’s like they doubled the smokiness of Johnnie Walker Black Label, but this variation significantly diminishes the sweetness of JWBL.
    • Finish
Lingering smoke with some spiced oak.  Very pleasant and rich.
