Whisky Reviews for Ballantine's 12-year-old

Low expectations have the advantage of leaving room for pleasant surprises, as happened with this 12-year-old Ballantine's. The nose is 'Auchentoshan + X': floral, light and fragrant with notes of tinned fruits, marzipan and soft spices. Certainly not bad for a Blended Scotch! Heather honey, parsley and a spicy touch of oak dominate the palate, very 'smooth' although I hate to use the word. This whisky does not benefit from additional water. As with most blends, the finish doesn't linger and remains rather vague. Still, it is almost better than JW Black Label.

Yes he is tasty; actually a whiskey that suits me in the taste actually, but in terms of intensity and alcohol, it is clearly too little ...

The direction is right, and in cask strength that could really be a bang for the bug ?! 20P
    • Nose
A light fruity nose, a bit of honey and vanilla, no more pungent - is not that strong. Here and there you could imagine some sweet oatmeal; So something fruity and malty. Not a bad nose, but without flashing me now. What I like but is this powdery sugar-like note, for example, have many independent bunnas from the Bourbon barrel. Here, however, this grade is far less pronounced. 22P
    • Taste
On the palate, it is in any case less intense and spectacular than the olfactory bulb. He is very tasty, but for real enjoyment I miss a few percent of dynamite! A sweet Honigmalt, with a subtle smoky note, or a Nötchen, but it lacking in volume but clearly in volume and character. You can credit him for drinking as if he had 30% vol. But the question is, was not this candidate diluted too much ...? 21P
    • Finish
We do not need to talk about leaving. He is virtually not present ...

The smell of its style reminds a bit of sherry's influence, which I take as a plus. Pleasantly sweet, honey, some winds, fruit. Smooth and blended at the same time, full and strong. (82 b)
    • Taste
The first impression on the tongue OK, but it starts to breathe a little. First delicately fruity honey, then rounded woodiness, nuts. The body is thinner. Sometimes a "metallic" impression, sometimes it even reminded me of licking the flat flash contacts. (80 b)

Too easy and then bitter finish, I used to judge this drop benevolent, today he does not convince me anymore. Are there any national resp. temporal differences in the bottlings? The former bottle was bought in Switzerland, the current one at a ridiculous price in a French shopping center. But probably the demands of the spoiled taste buds on the tongue rise just as the years go by ... And another supplement: Under http://www.whisky-monitor.com/index.jsp?tid=9 I have seen to my astonishment that exactly this drop is extremely volatile. And obviously our French friends are not supplied with the best quality!
    • Nose
The first attack not very convincing. Then stinging nettle, malt, fruit bowl. Slightly thin. Marzipan, coconut.
    • Taste
Nuts, some may say, some smoke, then honey and floral influences.
    • Finish
Honey, vanilla, chocolate, orange peel, camphor, ashes from a still smoldering campfire.
