A whiskey that really needs time, but then becomes sweeter and fuller. After 3/4 to an hour a little meager, but then it comes to life. With some patience, it is sure to enjoy.
    • Nose
Fruity, pear. And sweet, vanilla, toffee, nuts. Initially the smell is still weak, but after a while the smell is getting stronger, there is also more fruit as apple and citrus. Alcohol reasonably prominent.
    • Taste
Initially a bit sharp / peppery. Some more red fruit now, cherries or something. But after a while it changes, the sweet comes forward. Vanilla, chocolate. It gets hot and fuller. Stinging too.
    • Finish
Some peppery initially. Mid-length. Sweet, honey, vanilla. Some tones of (oak) wood. As time goes by, it becomes increasingly sweeter.

I seem to have misplaced my notes on this one, but I recall it was a standard grain whisky, neither bad nor good. A dram you could find the likes of easily. After tasting the sample I did not feel the need to buy a bottle although one was at hand at the time at a reasonable price.

  4. St. Pauli scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

N: very closed, only some sweet grain, mint and grass.
T: likewise. It gets a bit more lively with a hint of dried fruit, but not by much.
F: Average, a bit drying on ginger, wash leater, pepper and grain.
A bit better but water, but not impressive at all. And yes, I gave it time.

Patience is rewarded in the case of this Cambus. Balanced and fairly complex too. I like it!
    • Nose
I know grain whiskies need to breathe, but I find it hard to get used to that. An hour in and it still is very simple.  Let's wait another half hour then. A little less herbal than when I first nosed it right after pouring myself a glass. Still a fair amount of varnish, but also some frosting, coconut and vanilla. Pine needles too, but also some peanuts and creme brûlée. Quite good now.
    • Taste
Did not expect it to be as creamy and mouthcoating as it is. Scoring points here. Also lots of cappuccino. Mocha. Very reminiscent of a bourbon. Quite a lot of wood and plenty of vanilla sweetness. Orange liqueur too. Pine sap. Brown sugar.
    • Finish
      Sweet and long.

    • Nose
      Immediately after pouring:
Yet glue again, but further in the background. Alcohol. Furthermore, something fruity, pear. Vanilla.

      After more than an hour:
The glue has become stronger (this sounds strange). Fruity and sweet, very sweet. Orange.
    • Taste
      Immediately after pouring:
Taste: Flat taste, burning by the alcohol. Muffig.
      Flat, little spectacular

      After more than an hour:
Tobacco, citrus. You notice that the ABV is high but I do not find it annoying, a clear taste improvement. He has become a lot more complex.
    • Finish
      Immediately after pouring:
      Finish: Short

      After more than an hour:

    Nose:
A touch of glue and shoe polish, but that disappears very quickly. Then fudge, vanilla and caramel come around the corner. After 30 minutes, some chocolate. After 45 minutes more tropical fruit and banana meringues. With water, there is still a wash ditch side up. But then in the positive sense Furthermore, a bit of burnt wet cardboard ..... .

    Taste:
Full of sweet, candy sugar. With water more peppers emerge along with a sweet and a bit of bitter. Again some vanilla and toffee together with that burnt wet cardboard (OBE is never so fast?)

    Body:
    Medium

    Finish:
Medium length. Stinging, toffee vanilla and lemon.

Price: Around 80-90 euros is quite reasonable

Presentation: Do not know this was a sample.

    Comment:
Great whiskey, but does not blow me off my chair. There is a reasonable balance, but I feel that the barrel and spirit have neutralized each other. There were more pronounced influences in my opinion. 87 points.

Fresh and fruity, pretty decent for the price.
    • Nose
Not particularly expressive on first nosing. pear, apple, hints of caramel and butterscotch.
    • Taste
Thick and syrupy with a little coffee bitterness. Digestive biscuit, hints of orange marmalade and lemon sherbet sweets.
    • Finish
      Medium length and getting sweeter,

    Jan 2015

    ‘Simple, moorish and concise’
N: A ‘signatory’ cask strength bottling and smelling like cask strength. Grainy oak mixed with vanilla varnish is the expected order of the day. I like the fusty nuttiness that tailgates the main notes - and overall its a clean, oaky presentation and thus far not obviously a grain whisky given the rich depth attached to the simple profile. Adding water gives way to vanilla wafers with an aromatic cask influence. Simple but concise nose.
T: Its a potent and flavoursome opening but it needs water straight away. Theres a fine cask/spirit balance here with full cooperation which leads the way to a push me-pull me interplay between the bourbon/chocolate notes and the vanilla, wafer grain spirit. Simply a moorish swirling mouthful.
F: Short finish with a fresh chalky, waxy, sourness to accompany the wafer ice cream.
C: This Cambus is all about that moorish mouth feel on delivery and development which leads to regular ‘dad noises’. Perfect in its own sweet way.

    Scores a B+

    April 2015

N: Lots of nuttiness to start, sticky blackberry pollen, plantain, chillies, black pepper, lime & vanilla ice-cream

T: Very bourbon like, cherry & redcurrant with more chillies and black pepper - becoming fruity now with more vanilla cream. Fine oak presence.

F: Lots more cream, vanilla double cream and sour cream plus an industrial dirty, murkiness that im enjoying.

C: Just as excellent as I remember it before.

    Scores a B+

    Beautiful! Very elegant dram.
    • Nose
Vanilla, caramel, toffee, sugar. Butterscotch candy. Typical ex-bourbon cask. Very well balanced.
    • Taste
Gentle start. Smooth and oily. Sweet vanilla and honey. After a while a little ginger spiciness.
    • Finish
Rich, spicy oak. Kinda bitter, but very enjoyable. A hint of salt and aybe a touch of peat smoke. But that could be the cask as well.

gold color, moderately expressive nose, classic, lots of cereals, vanilla, coconut. Much better in the mouth, very sweet, thick, sweet and greedy, a lot of vanilla and coconut attack with a milk chocolate side, then more and more spices. Final less interesting, average length, cereals, spices. Very nice surprise for a young grain whiskey, especially the mouth. Rating: 84/100
