Whisky Reviews for Caol Ila 1974 SV

Adding the right amount of water gives a beautiful creamy mouthfeel that lingers and lingers. Jim Murray was right !

And then this wonderful "dirty" old peat smoke.... a whisky dream.

    Colour:
    straw yellow
    Nose:
Very straightforward and very, very peaty. Wet straw / hay, lime, leather, wax, a truckload full of vanilla, sweet peat sed, coal, tar, asphalt and hot rubber (like burned car tires). A pretty "dirty" nose, but we like it very much!
    Taste:
Harmonious, powerful, peaty, spicy and fruity. Honey and vanilla, as well as smoky notes of tar, coal, ash, medicine, wet soil, peat and tobacco. Here there is spice up to the stop. Simply bomb!
    Finish:
Long - dry, but the peaty-medical notes remain steadfast. Smoky, fruity and bourbon-vanilla throughout.

    Colour: Gold.
Nose: Meaty, peaty, on cold ashes, old bonfire and cigarette
smoke, seaweed, iodine, and hemp rope. With a deep, satisfying and complex
    nose.
Taste: Dry, very maritime, salty, on kelp, iodine, nice oak, old peat
smoke and cold ashes, quite mineral, with some wet tobacco leaves and bourbon
vanilla. The finish is long, peaty, smoky, maritime and on kelp.
    General
Impression: One of the finest Caol Ila I have tasted and even better than the
1975 Caol Ila bottled at the same time. It is rich, complex, intense and in the
same league as the products distilled during the 1970s in the distillery south
    of Caol Ila.

A Superb fine mineral Coal Ila close to the style of the 1960s

Superb ancient Caol Ila, very enjoyable old peat smoke!
