My first whiskey with screw cap since a felt eternity. The price and the fact that I bought a blend make me a little skeptical about the first glass and the first sip. The Johnny Walker Double Black is certainly not a bad whiskey, and for me it can not compete with a single malt. Granted, the JW is a good all-day dram, nothing more, nothing less. A decent PLV and a whiskey next door.
    • Nose
After pouring a discreet column of smoke rises, fruity elements join. Earthy peat slowly dissolves from the cold smoke, apples and pears mix with the now smoky peat. A pinch of pepper lies in the background while malted cereal mixes with some caramel. A syrupy streak sticks to the glass wall, individual drops dissolve and flow back oily into the glass. Peat, smoke and sweet caramel now dominate the nose.
    • Taste
Fruity, sourish flavors mix with the first sip with dry and dry wood elements. Slowly the earthy peat aroma of the nose returns, the cold smoky note lies discreetly in the background, a pinch of pepper spreads warming in the mouth. The austere oak tones now harmonize relatively well with the smoky peat, an old and dark walnut aroma rises from the dry wood notes. The wood and the peat play together and slowly the taste goes on harsh and smoky in the finish.
    • Finish
Woody notes and cold smoke mix to a bitter aroma. Here and there are fruity elements, a hint of vanilla comes to light. Slowly, the harsh oak tones go back into dark and old walnut flavor. A pleasant peat note is above all else.

A nice smooth whisky, Nothing complex, not overly peaty but a good everyday whisky.

Sweet fruits, vanilla, furniture polish, cinnamon, cake, floral, dates, caramel, cream notes on nose.

Creosote, spices, pepper, cream, oak cask, light dryness, dried fruits on palate.

Middle finish with caramel, peated smoke, spices, vanilla, dry hay and sea foods note.

This is a very good scotch with nice balance of sweetness and peat smoke.

The fragrance is slightly smoky with lots of liquorice (typical Dutch 'trekdrop') and some spiciness. The taste is somewhat sharp with again clear liquorice influences. The finish is short with bitterness and spiciness in it.

It's weak, very simple and unpretentious, but it's probably the first product in the Johnny line that you can drink for pleasure in its purest form, black does not hold out, let alone red.
    • Nose
Raw, cool, smoke, wet coals, ash, dry peat, wet wool.
    • Taste
Smoky woody, peppery, lemon peels, light creamy notes, boiled condensed milk.
    • Finish
Pepper-spicy, lemon peel, a little confectionery sweets, a young bark, grassy bitterness.

aren´t we snobs sometimes. this baby has been resting in peace for quite some time on my shelf since I have opened it. what a shame, cause this is good stuff and a real bfyb at that price.
of course not a big whisky but it beats hundreds of far more expensive single malts.

wow... this is not bad at all. a nice, round peater with great balance.
the smoke is obvious but gentle and integrated very well. a little eucalyptus and cough candies.
coastal feeling with sea breeze, wet beach, hemp ropes and some linseed oil. mild oak.
    • Taste
good harmony with gentle smoke, sweet malt, a little vanilla, honey or a little beeswax.
the peated components seem to be rather young but I´d say , there are older non peated whiskies in this blend. I´d really like to know which!
    • Finish
      medium and clean.
