  1. Calmar scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

The representative representative of the distillery, well balanced, soft, drink, is not a masterpiece, but it makes a very good impression. The commercial fortress is not annoying, the depth and saturation is enough for a thoughtful tasting.
    • Nose
Open, dry, honey-waxed with mineral tones, wildflowers, herbs, lemon, syrup, pollen, warm, light, quite characteristic for the distillery.
    • Taste
Mineral-lemon, creamy sweetness, sweet oak, pepper-ginger wave, oil cream, orange peel, orange confiture, boiled condensed milk, toffee.
    • Finish
Oak-sweet with the growth of bitterness and astringent notes, ginger, creamy tones, wax, propolis.

    Appropriate standard from yesteryear...
    • Nose
      85 85
Heavy summer blooms, hints of resinous smoke, honey
    • Taste
      86 86
Sunflower oil, light flint note, bitter-spicy honey
    • Finish
      86 86
For only 43%, a relatively long, pleasantly spicy aftertaste, with light tannins and lemon-pineapple sorbet.

Clynelish H2H tasted in this order:-

    14 year 43% Flora & Fauna OB WB 50601 82/80/82
    14 year 46% OB WB 20452 86/70/72
    Distillery Only 2019 48% OB WB 140100 88/87/86
    Distillery Only 2008 57.3% OB WB 1163 86/84/83
    Clynelish Select Reserve 2014 54.9% OB WB 58122 86/86/87
    Clynelish Select Reserve 2015 54.9% OB WB 73373 87/88/88
    Clynelish 1990 27 year 49.5% cask 13155 Ian Macleod Dun Bheagan WB 115893 90/88/90
Clynelish 1996 18 year 54.9% Hunter Laing Platinum Selection WB 62875 WB 90/91/90

The first two OB were disappointing, the 46% 14 year was verging on rubbish, certainly not a patch on how I remember. The next four OB were good and final two IB were excellent.

A pleasant nose, starts on honey, dark orange marmalade, honeycomb, hint of white pepper but not particularly expressive as it is already fading in the glass.
The palate starts off really spicy which is nice but also quite bitter which isn`t.
The fruit is a little sour, which is orange, touch of mango faint lemon, not massively sour or anything but certainly not sweet.
Finish is ok, just a bit bland

Brief comparison with the 14-year standard bottling (WID: 52446).

The flora & fauna has significantly more wax notes on the nose than the normal 14er. The F&F also seems somehow more set, but also more mineral. The standard filling becomes livelier in comparison, but not immature.
In the mouth, the F&F is quite oily and waxy. For me it also looks like a blend from the past. Old school. But also somewhat too subdued. The normal 14er looks livelier and almost more interesting because it is multifaceted. With the standard 14er, the fruits are fresher, the oak tingled and a little wax. At F&F, the wax is almost too dominant and artificial for me.

I think I like the standard 14er better. There's more life in there.

  10. dRambo scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
a lot of wax - rather the artificial candle wax, clear acidity - reminiscent of Weisweinessig, sweet candied lemon peel - lemon, lime blossom, rose water, a lot of grass, furniture polish,
    • Taste
Lemon, malt, stone meal, grass, - beautiful retro profile - but something suffers under the wax
    • Finish
      medium long, fruity, dark chocolate

    • Nose
Beeswax candles, light honey, yellow apples. Matchbox, hot sand, red peppercorns.
    • Taste
Oily. Honey, liquid wax, a touch of pepper. Behind it apricot tart and milk chocolate.

Clynelish 14-year-old, 43 vol, Flora & Fauna from Michael Jackson's Malt Whisky Companion (4th edition)

    Colour: pale gold.

Nose: Sea, perhpas seaweed, and peat.

Body: medium to full, smooth. Visibly oily.

Palate: starts malty (sweetish when water is added), becoming fruity-spicy (mustard?), with notes of seaweed and salt.

Finish: remarkable, lingering spiceness. Stays very fresh, with an emphatic mustard flavour. Reminiscent of mustard and cress. A tremendously appetizing malt.

    Score: 81
