already pleasantly sour and quite interesting, but not quite my taste.
    • Nose
Lime, green apple, a bit grassy, wax ?, little oak
    • Taste
sweet at once, then distinctly Granny Smith apple (but one that is not yet ripe and leaves a "dull" feeling), a sharpness that I would put somewhere in the mint
    • Finish
medium (5/10), dry and slightly salty

When I started reviewing regularly, I purposefully put off writing a handful of whiskies that I was already familiar with because I wanted to come back to them with more experience.

This review is one of those.

I've had a soft spot for the distillery for a while, but it's now been over a year since I've had any, and it felt like time to crack this mini bottle open.

There's been a lot of semi-recent talk of bad batches in Clynelish, but luckily, this didn't seem to have been affected.

The Clynelish 14 is a masterclass on how not to be too sweet.

Because it is sweet and very fruity, but there are all these counterbalanced elements in place (nuttiness, spice, baked goods, wood), that add to the experience in their own right and don't pull focus, for the most part.

The exception, obviously being that thing that every review of Clynelish is legally bound to include: The Wax.

I can report that It's there but diminished compared to the reference sample in my memory.

It was still in the nose and present at the very tip of the approach, ever so slightly muting the fruity syrup accelerating up behind it, but not the defining characteristic it once was.

Which is a shame, but honestly the rest of it has plenty to offer outside of that and I enjoyed getting to know it all over again.

    Otherwise, still great.

One thing that had changed, or at least, I am now tasting differently, is the very tail end.

The presence of bitterness itself wasn't a surprise, but there was a point where the rich coffee gained a greener, more earthy dimension and I wasn't expecting that at all.

Candied nuts, umeshu, bourbony oak, bees wax, dried fruits, Danish pastries, apricot yoghurt, leather
    • Taste

Canned fruit salad syrup, chunky marmaladea and melted butter, spiky ginger, almond biscotti
    • Finish
      86 86
Dried apple, apricots, and cherries, white pepper, honeyed oak, weak eucalyptus, sweet, dark coffee/dandelion

Absolute surprise for me. Expected little and got a Talisker with no smoke.
Very salty, which is very reminiscent of sea air or salt water. However, it was never uncomfortable

All-time classic for me with an enticingly waxy aroma profile including honey, oranges and seawater spray. I like it, period! The go-to everyday dram of my choice if I had one and surely one of the better standard range whiskies.

    • Nose
Quiet green initially. Farmy, green peas, green vegetal pasta. No trace of any peat. With time, the resinous, waxy nature is coming through more obviously.
    • Taste
Very sweet compared to the nose. Vegetal sweetness.

Sinks a little from the nose to the finish. Still accepted standard.
    • Nose

      Nice fresh, very fruity beginning.
There is also vanilla, some hay and a pleasantly sweet note. Honey, some wax and salty, maritime. A more artificial citrus note seems rather out of place between the other flavors.
    • Taste
      85 85
      Sparklingly spicy, not really spicy.
      Sweetness and fruit are dominant.
And creamy with this light maritime sea breeze. Great malt that offers a lot.

Medium-long finish, gets a little dry with a subtle lemon note.

    Conclusion and pictures on: https://tomtrinkt.de
    • Nose
Surprisingly multi-faceted. At the beginning, I perceive a pronounced floral-fruity note. Floral aromas, dark forest honey, crème brûlée, plenty of caramel, subtle candle wax and echoes of exotic fruits dominate my first impressions. The basic character is pleasantly light, but without being powerless, very fresh and balanced. In the background I already register the first spicy oak notes and a maritime flavor, which reminds me of a fresh sea breeze. Makes you want to more!
    • Taste
Very pleasing the Clynelish clothes the entire mouth (creamy texture), before a fruity-spicy interplay begins. The alcohol content of 46% ensures a powerful onset, at the tip of the tongue creates a very slight tingle (Pfeffrigkeit). Vanilla, caramel, dark forest honey, orange peel, apricot and malt dominate the fruity-sweet side. The spicy-maritime side is characterized by spices (cloves, a hint of cinnamon), walnuts, spicy oak notes and salt (sea breeze).
    • Finish
Medium long, warm and spicy. The floral-fruity aromas build up with the last of their strength, before a strong conglomeration of spices, hints of herbs and oak is gaining in tasteful upper water. The result is a slight dryness and a delicate bitterness on the palate.

A pleasant basic mole with a beautiful aroma, rich in shades and semitones, refreshing taste and aftertaste, "semi-dry" - there is sweetness, but completely invisible, shading fresh sourness.
    • Nose
Light, refreshing, green apples, wax, mineral tones - dry cobblestones, grindstone, herbal notes, lemonade, dry crushed grain, in the background - carpentry workshop, varnish, solvent, furniture polish and again a wave of freshly cut juicy green apple peel with a barely perceptible presence of raisins.
    • Taste
Wax, apple juice, bitter taste of apple seeds, ginger, orange.
    • Finish
Ginger-pepper on an acidic apple juice, fresh, invigorating, with a slight hint of warming up, but it still remains rather cool, long enough.

Lovely. The oak is really active, which makes one wonder about what Clyenlish' spirit would taste like when it has less prominent casks to contend with. High time for an indy, eh?
    • Nose
Biscuits, honey, vanilla, freshly mown grass, almond paste, mandarins.
    • Taste
Just a whiff of smoke, minerally, pepper, rather drying, vanilla, more mandarins, salty mushrooms, quite fresh.
    • Finish
Very active oak, quite dry but in a good way. It's long, tongcoating and salty/minerally again. The spices linger.

A wonderful standard floral paint, you can always dahaben if you like the direction and for the warmer days, great!
    • Nose
Very beautiful Florality, the typical waxy note, very pleasant though restrained, fine honey and nettle melon in the background, vanilla, lemon ice cream, lightest coastal air
    • Taste
Beeswax and candle wax, honey, citric acid, vanilla, beautiful flowers, green apple, lime, very fine but slightly spicy oak, coriander, rosemary, light sea air again in the background
    • Finish
Floral, lemon, dry oak and vanilla, medium length

Body: Firm, oily and seductively smoky.
    • Nose
Fragrant. Like a stool in the sand dunes.
    • Taste
Firm hit of cleansing flavours. Coriander. Orange. Dry. Spicy. Distinctively mustardy.
    • Finish
The spiciness becomes yet more perfumy and exotic. Both satisfying.

The Clynelish 14yo seems to be a tad divisive (see my predecessor´s review).
If I understand the Dutch words correctly, he admits that it is not bad though...

Well, Clynelish has always got this peculiar maritime sweet-sour and waxy note that some may find odd - I simply love it!

This Clynelish from Diageo´s core range is really one of their best malts in my opinion, as its flavour and mouthfeel stands out from many other whiskies.

    Nose:-
Grainy and pickled ginger. Poached pear and faint leather. Lightly
coastal. Citrus acidity. Extensive fermentation with minimum sugar
    residue. Quite robust.

    Palate:-
Woody and very crisp with lean honey and nutty. Dry with cold smokes.
Raw and thin mouthfeel with strange flavours that are different than
    most.

Finish:- Long with bitter lemon at the exit. Throat
warming and smokes arise. Oaky and tartness stays around for long time.
Waxy. Need a few good sips to get to like her.

hints of ham oil, which is strikingly good if you mix it in the butter honey

An honest dram, simple yet interesting in a way.
    • Nose
Very malty with notes of butter, caramel, apples, pears, maybe even bananas. Shortbread and vanilla are there too.
    • Taste
Creamy, malty, delicate sweetness of light fruits is spiced up with ginger and chilli. White sugar adds up to the mix.
    • Finish
Quite short, slightly bitter with the fruitiness lingering for a while.

A straightforward, soft barley-wholegrain character on the round side. Very nice ones it reaches it's peak. This is probably the bottle I ever had that took the most time to reach the full character. One of the truly secure choices in terms of basic line OB. But be patient - the neck might be really closed at first. In this way reminiscent of the great Brora (according to my very limited experience of course) - the quality is high but might seem quite austere to begin with; when it opens up you have a whole other galaxy to wonder. Maybe they are an intuitively esoteric family, not willing to waste their true character on every twerp?

    • Taste
Oaky, Werther's Echte candies with spices. Tiny hint of peach and vanilla.
    • Finish
Almost a briny finish, but with very little salt. Quite some vanilla. Very nice long lasting after taste.

Nice whisky! Little bit hot on the palette but not too much. Not overly complex but interesting enough.

    82-84 points.
    • Nose
Butterscotch, medium impact nose. Vanilla, oak. Typical bourbon nose in my view.
    • Taste
Smooth, spicy attack. Bananas, little but salty. Honey. Oak. Little bit of lemon zest as well.
    • Finish
Medium finish, little spice notes in the beginning, followed by banana then overruled by sweetness (honey).

Has been on my waiting list for some time. I'm looking forward to... Color golden brown, almost a reddish glow. He does not smell like a whisky, has something special. Very soft and fruity, immediately vanilla, sweet oak barrel. A bit of smoke should lt lt label in it, I do not smell. A first sip reinforces my positive impression. The taste is a little spicier, there is some clove, juniper. Man, the scent is great. Long, spicy finish. Class Malt!

    • Nose
Beeswax. Wild flowers. Brine. Rubber. Orange cake. Worn copper coins. But of a herbal note hiding away. Some candied fruit. Sweet white wine.
    • Taste
Spicy and woody. Not woodspice, two distinct notes here. Peppery spices, pickled ginger and dry wood. Honey. Flowers. Malted barley (like the actual stuff). Citrus zest. Maybe some lemon zest too.
