This dram resembles coffey due to the thinness of its frame. It's another addition to the chain of chocolate - lemon palate whiskys. Nothing earth-shaking. A pleasant whisky.
    • Nose
      85 85
A vague coffeyish, burned fragrance is present. A dominant wall of citrus almost protects the dram. The citrus gives a fresh fragrance, yet overpowers. Some fruit gets through.
    • Taste
      87 87
A devious 45 % abv., the alcohol seems tame at first, perhaps coupled with spice, but builds up to a decent strength. The frame isn't too robust, though. This customer may use added water. Just a teaspoonful. A dark chocolate joins in, amplified by the water.
    • Finish
      86 86
At this point, a veteran whisky-lover will come to realize, this dram displays the same sweet and sour combination, chocolate and lemon, as countless other whiskys. The alcohol lingers. A short-lived finish. But pleasant.

Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky, 45% ABV, lot no. 6/12E381528. The bottle has been open for around 4 years. Tasted 03.01.2020:
NOSE: Sweet, fruity malt and bourbon barrel notes; Barley sugar, light treacle, honey, butter, vanilla, dried banana, hint of fresh banana, sweet almonds, coconut, sweet wood, a little sawdust. Really nice! (88p)
TASTE: The arrival is rather sweet, viscous and nice. The mid palate is less interesting; there is more sweet bourbon wood and less fruitiness. Cinnamon. With a few drops of water it opens up and becomes a bit more complex, with more but not stronger spices (85 p)
FINISH: The finish is also a bit woody, with old wood notes, furniture polish, cinnamon and some black pepper. Rather long. (85 p)
    TOTAL SCORE 85 points.

Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky. Tasted in 2015.
    4.0 out of 5 stars
Intense and very fruity nose with lots of tangerine, then smoke and pecan and brazil nuts. Pouring it in a large tulip shaped (red wine) helped very much in catching the full richness of the nose.
Taste: Medium rich, nicely balanced. In the mouth initially less fruity than on the nose, but a week after opening the fruit unfolds here too, with apples and oranges. Vanilla, hints of maple suryp (but not sweet) and towards the end come spice, smoke and some iodine.
Very nice whisky for the price.

Just great, incredibly round chocolates. <3

Fruity spicy, cappuccino praline, bitter orange, other citrus also comes up short, sweet malt, Williams pear and cinnamon
    • Taste
Deep orange, as in brandy, mocha, vanilla, hint of cinnamon, plums, chocolates, mirabelle
    • Finish
Medium to long, dry sweet with a little spice

  5. Ostap scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

Pleasant Japanese, confectionery in aroma and this is his strongest point. The taste is pleasant but without enough depth.
    • Nose
      85 85
Fresh, oatmeal cookies, chocolate, sherry, Artek waffles, noticeable confectionery aroma, fresh paint (acetone), children's breakfast cereals, figs and dates, marinade note (branded for the Japanese), overripe cherries, carefully mineral notes, coffee with flavors , sweet popcorn, rahat-lukum. Cucumber brine in an empty glass.
    • Taste
      84 84
Prickly, pepper, sweet, carbonated water, berry sour, sweet nut paste.
    • Finish
      83 83
Warms, candy (caramels), not long, sweet and sour carbonated water, dry.

  6. Matt80 scored this whisky 91 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
A sweet nose with toffee and fruit. Lots of pear and citrus fruits with vanilla. Almost bourbon like.

With water - sweeter topped with vanilla ice cream
    • Taste
Rich, heavy fruit and nut. Strong overtones of orange and lemon with golden syrup. Quite creamy and buttery.

      With water - much creamier.
    • Finish
Medium/long, a lingering honey note with wood spice and a sprinkle of salt. The fruit is still present with a touch of oakiness and hazelnut.

With water - medium, wood spice lingers

Bought the bottle years ago, but I'm still in love with this one! Maybe a bit too much on the sweet side for some but still my favourite non-peaty whisky.
