    Nice Malt, but I had better Octomore.
    • Nose
      First, a peat smoke strikes. Then come along with citrus fruits maritime, salty notes, but also a certain Pfeffrigkeit. I also smell carnations.
    • Taste
      Peat smoke, citrus fruits and maritime notes are confirmed.
    • Finish
      The spicy taste of cloves stays in the neck for a long time with a nice pepperiness. Likewise the smoke.

    Very solid beginning of Octomore, it is not necessarily complex, but above average for such a young spirit.
    • Nose
      The first smell is significantly more bare smoke than typical Octomore, which later will be noticed with very concentrated smoke tips, but then evaporates, becomes vegetable, zucchini, green peppers, autumn leaves, sour bread, salami
    • Taste
      Also noticeable zucchini, green peppers, damp leather, olives, rye bread, wax, fish oil, damp algae and small brine, fresh oak chips
    • Finish
      White grapefruit, autumn leaves, roasted malt, olives, medium to long

    A good starter to an Octomore tasting, but this is its only use. Comrades Futures II, 4.1, 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 and 2002 10yo are in a much different league.

    Still a good standard peaty whisky, but not at todays prices.

      medium, phenol and sharpness in the foreground

    # Blind tasting
    Reminiscent of the Laphroaig 10y CS, but wilder and immature. I would not have thought blind to an Octomore.
    • Nose
      Violent peat smoke, juniper, liquorice, a subtle sweetness, something medical. The nose screams Laphroaig.
    • Taste
      Very strong, but pure edible, a nice sweetness, slightly vanilla, but also a lot of peat smoke, licorice, herbaceous, spicy.
    • Finish
      long peat smoke, medicinal, juniper, slightly herbaceous, but rather less oak, but much dry smoke.

    The very first Octomore bottling produced for public sale by Jim McEwan which at the time was the most heavily peated Whisky in the world at 80.5 PPM. This is now a very collectable bottle which we rarely come across and it essential if your trying to obtain a complete Octomore set

    Smoky and fruity aroma, pear, green apple, vanilla and malt. Vanilla sweet taste, smoke, malt, lime, pepper and orange juice. Long, smoky, spicy and malty end.

    Tasted this as a `work in progress` that was in 2003 in Limburg during a Murray McDavid dinner. The legendary Jim McEwan was our host for that evening and, the very lsat sample was an octomore at 6 months old at 80.5 ppm. I have to say that, that particular sample was a little bit to much of everything. It can ruin the wonderfull aftertaste of a 1970 Bruichladdich, so becarefull with these smokey high phenol malt whiskies.
