Whisky Reviews for St. Magdalene 1980 GM

15 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 85.38 points

  1. Gaija scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

A fine expression, but prolonged bottle aeration has weakened this already delicate (40%) Saint-Magdelene. Refined notes of pineapple-flavoured candies and citrus peel dominate the profile. Good starter.

  3. LiquidThoughts scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Offers more contrast with mineral, malty-bitter, etc. notes to the pear than the Albyn before it (but interesting to have so clear pear and large apple again), are exactly in the middle 85P, no more, no less.
    • Nose
What? That's pear calvados, don't tell me, nothing in the nose but mashed, very floury peat pear, light herbal honey later, nougat, a little salt and wax, but that's all there is to it
    • Taste
Also the pear, very floury, then unfortunately also some seeds, light malt, brown bread rind, wax, lemongrass, paper, slate, chalk, pebbles, mineral content, birch sap, very light, matt oak
    • Finish
Chalk, ginger, pear chips, maybe medium length at most.

Nose: rambutan, white grape, blue cheese, blue raspberry flavouring
Palate: double cream, green apple (not a sharp one), white peach
    Finish- glace fruits

Tasted as part of Coke Float Thursday

sweet, slightly mineral, a bit grass, a bit citrus-fruity, a bit spicy, a hint of vanilla, a bit bitter, very good

A little too much wax and lavender, like grandma's old suitcase. Otherwise nice “white” fruits, citrus notes. Light pepper in the finish. I'm afraid my sample is probably a bit stale.

This actually smells like a creamy blend as it is all on white fruits and well I suppose, cream on the nose.
This is indeed fruity, on apple and pear but there is also a healthy dollop of peat also.
I don`t think this is typical of a good quality St Magdalene, in fact it shows little of the distillery character but I put that down to the 40% abv.
In truth, it is a little boring but nice enough.

  11. LeChiffre scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

The fresh, fruity notes of this bottling are quite interesting, but the whisky just looks too watered down. As a result, it lacks intensity and the aromas cannot come into their own. A little more alcohol (3-6%) would have been good for the whisky. Too bad.
    • Nose
      82 82
fresh fruity with tropical fruit notes; green apples (like Haribo apple rings); Pear; Kiwi; Green tea; slightly grassy notes; some honey; spicy wood notes; something reminiscent of a delicate smoky note sometimes flashes through
      - Interesting fresh and fruity nose
    • Taste
      79 79
      soft and watery; fruity-sweet; light fruits (yellow fruit); Green tea; slightly grassy notes; a little white pepper; delicate spicy oak;
      - uncomplicated and easy drinking, but unfortunately looks quite watered down
    • Finish
      78 78
relatively short; fruity; delicate oak flavor; becoming slightly dry

  12. Dhugal MacArdry scored this whisky 79 points Expert Senior

With a maturation of 15 years I expected more fullness and body.
    • Nose
      80 80
Pleasant, but also weak. There is hardly any alcohol in the nose.
    • Taste
      78 78
Relieving. I my tongue and palate don't really know what to taste. Somehow "colorless". Not fish, not meat. Bottling at 43 or 46% might have been better.
      What a pity.
    • Finish
      78 78
Short. There is nothing more to say.

    tasted with Aby
    • Nose
citrus, honey, floral and fruity - great tropical fruits - cantaloupe melone
    • Taste
fresh fruits, wax and white pepper
    • Finish
fruity, a bit drying and later some leather

  14. markjedi1 scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

A rather docile expression from this lost Lowlander. You can still find
it, but it will set you back around 250 EUR these days. Better spend it on
    something else.
    • Nose
The nose is soft and sweet. A mix of white and tropical fruit. Apple,
pear, banana and kiwi. Especially that last one. Reminds me a bith of a
smoothie, actually. It also has a little dirty edge of patato peel, but it does
not bother. Au contraire, in enhances.
    • Taste
The palate is not bad, but rather weak. Besides the fruit, there is also a strong hint of bubblegum, which is
      somewhat offensive.
    • Finish
The finish is short and sweet, with zero bite.

  15. magic_slim scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

It has become difficult to find bottlings of St. Magdalene which have matured for 15 years only. So I was very curious to taste this bottling from 1995, which was recommended to me by Luc at the Lindores Whiskyfestival. And I must admit that I really like it - very smooth, pleasant and hugely drinkable.
    • Nose
Mellow, fresh and clean. Notes of fresh cut apples, green tea, grass and hints of peat. Lovely fruityness, which includes citric notes as well.
    • Taste
Smooth, balanced and easy drinkable. Lemon cake, green tea and white pepper with hints of oak. Pleasant.
    • Finish
Medium long and clean without any unpleasant notes.
