  1. peatbogger scored this whisky 80 points Specialist

According to reliable sources there is a not unsignficant part of Scotch in this Japanese.
    • Nose
      82 82
Red fruits. Watered down red table wine.
Some exotic wood, probably a large tree that's been choped down, but also some smaller bushes and shrubberies still in the ground with new sprung leaves.
Very gentle, so little wrong that it feels engineered, "Made in Japan" probably mean that it is. However that perfectionism is exactly what makes it lack that enthusiastic spark.
    • Taste
      81 81
Same with the taste, it doesn't make me enthusiastic.
Very drinkable, nothing wrong and that's what's wrong.
Some would say "smooth", I call it slick. It slips down without very much to grasp on to, although it got a noticable level of all spice.
Sweet, caramel, maybe a nut or two.
    • Finish
      78 78
Very simple short finish on caramel notes, although some spicy warmth lingers for a little bit longer.

Pretty bland and constructed, a whiskey meant to flatter and please. It didn't quite work out, however, and I got a lot of tired and flat impressions in terms of taste. The oak wood aside, that's what appealed to me. For the full review, go here: https://halbendrinks.de/2022/12/22/andere-insel-anderer-whisky/

Yellow gold hue, thin legs, fast flow.

The nose is wonderful and promising, a lot was happening. The palate can use a little water. Twiglets aftertaste added som fun.
    • Nose
      86 86
Warm musk, red dates (jujubes), honeycomb, concentrated lime juice, faint hint of soy sauce, red berries, and quite fragrant. More dates with time, and menthol notes. Rock sugar, sandalwood, magazine paper, bread yeast. Damp wood and flan at the same time. Caramel chocolate and strawberry appeared at the very end. Quite promising nose.
Water brought out more floral, and vanilla, notes.
    • Taste
      84 84
Very flavoursome, zesty and juicy, albeit a little gingery on the tongue.

Water rounded the mouthfeel, and brought out some milk chocolate and red grape.
    • Finish
      84 84
Cocoa straight down the throat, and twiglets aftertaste.

1732) Ichiro's, Pure Malt Whisky, MWR-Mizunara Wood Reserve
    • Nose
N- Chocolaty, much bourbon influence overlay, then buttery, grape-y, biscotti and cherry. Many reviews say this has pronounced M oak fragrant, but don't seem to get much of it. A subtle tinge of sandal does layer at the bottom, like a walnut crumbles, pick up the dash of pepper fragrant. A dram that works your lungs at the beginning, a nice nosing dram nonetheless, but don't overly insist on the M oak. (86/20)
    • Taste
P- On the contrary, quite switch on when reaching the palate. More forwarding so to speak with a gentle burst of flavors, fat and sweet peach with a zesty mouth-coat. Grainy sweet black licorice toffee, Hacks, and Brandy souvee cherry. (87/21)
    • Finish
F- Medium, tart, and spicy as you chew, wood lingers, some dried fruits, and remain dry. (87/21)
B/B- 87/21 As most Pure Malt or Blended Malt, lack distinctiveness.

      Weighted Rate- 83pt

    • Nose
      85 85
Pleasant on the nose, light caramel.
    • Taste
      83 83
Quite slightly in the direction of plum wine. Not that cute.
    • Finish
      79 79
Not particularly in the finish, not disturbing. Rather short.

  10. Totoro scored this whisky 71 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
      76 76
Pretty young and feisty, making it seem stronger than 46 percent. Lots of fresh / active / extractive oak, with a spicy impression. Needs time in the glass to settle down and mellow the f.... out. But even then, there's really not a whole lot to find here.
    • Taste
      69 69
As expected: young, eau-de-vie-style fruits directly from the stills: pear, and apple, mostly, and perhaps a tangerine that's about to go bad. Not much else going on besides a peppery heat that seems to stem in equal amounts from the young spirit and the hyperactive oak. I don't care for the flavor of this one bit, sorry.
    • Finish
      69 69
      Hot and sweet and flat.

I taste this malt during a trip to Japan, at Kyoto's Cordon Noir.
General comment: if Akuto produces these results with young malts let alone what it will give us in 5-10 years!
    • Nose
Delicate, sweet and fruity, raisins, not at all alcoholic
    • Taste
Good body, not as light as the Japanese usually are but denser. Initially fruity then a captivating sweetness emerges, coconut but also tart (coconut tart?)
    • Finish
      Medium, sweet, balanced finish

  22. KyotoLefty scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

    Appearance: Shiny golden to amber.

Nose: Spicy, wood spices, vanilla, toffee, light banana, green herbs.

Palate: Spicy and sweet vanilla, toffee, pepper, tasty, spicy, Asian, but a bit bland.

Finish: Sweet caramel and toffee and wood spices.

With Water: Better, soft, sweet and syrupy.

Overall: Spicy and sweet with that Asiatic mizunara incense feel but it is very light. This is young and a bit weak. Totally does not live up to the hype or the premium prices.

  23. Idefix scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

For the cheap price it was okay.
Fine Mizunara, of course not to be measured with a single cask.

Wonderfully soft and delicate wood aromas, a wonderful and very special whiskey.
It will be the same with this one as with the heavily smoky whiskey: you like it or you don't like it.
I think the composition is perfect and it is definitely worth a recommendation.
    • Nose
lots of oak (fresh wood) soft and delicate, slightly spicy and fruity, very light floral and herbaceous notes. But the delicate and soft wood scent has that say here
    • Taste
spicy, here again a lot of oak and wood notes which do not feel intrusive but rather well integrated. very soft and round. Then herbs come through, some vanilla and later it becomes a little oily
    • Finish
spicy and again a lot of delicate oak and wood notes, very long and tasty. The wood aromas stay on the tongue for a long time.

  27. Jackson05 scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Simple but enjoyable. Plums of all kinds. Real fruit gummies, vanilla and a little chalky. Perhaps a little lemon. Good mouthfeel. These simple blends are so overpriced at retail it’s insane. I’m sure if I put this in a lineup of non Japanese blends it would score lower, but in this context it did well.

Good introduction to the topic. Pay attention to old batch numbers ... then there is more H inside .. :-)

  29. maltaholic scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

    A very fine smell.
The oak is delicate and soft, light, moist wood.
In the mouth a mixture of spice, wood and vanilla.
    Glorious.

    Nose:
In the nose I immediately perceive a touch of Japan. Sounds funny, but there are actually incense sticks that spread something ethereal, sandalwood and a touch of freshly brewed chrysanthemum tea. However, fruity notes, such as red overripe apples, pears, but also mirabelles and apricots, take over quite fast. Rosemary and sage in the background give a nice spicy touch. Some time to breathe brings a touch of coconut with it. Overall, a nice, but not very complex nose.

    Mouth:
The fruits from the nose are consistent in the mouth, but the market is clearly marked by the wood and very spicy. The fruit emphasizes that beautifully, but is subordinate.
The spicy notes remind me of the 18yo Yamazaki Mizunara, but in comparison are more exuberant and clumsy, not so beautiful filigree. With a little time left in the mouth, there is a lot more coconut, sandalwood and a hint of fennel.

    Finish:
Medium long and again spicy with a sweet undertone of bounty bars

A beautiful malt that is not bursting with complexity, but is not too one-dimensional.

There were 5 of us tasting this dram, all trying to identify the coconut aroma, said to be so typical for the Mizunara oak finish. All of us failed. However, we did find it to be an excellent dram. Refined and complete, no particular extremes but overall very good.

  33. LiquidThoughts scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Very nice fruity-crisp Chichibu, honestly, they can not do much wrong with me, even though I had some worries about such a young Mizunara. More points are simply prevented by lack of age and depth.
    • Nose
Very clear wine influence, not quite as typical Mizunara, only the apple compote seems familiar, otherwise rather the darker notes of wine, fresh plums, figs, unripe cherry, licorice and damp grass, chocolate chips, all sorts of nuts, biscuit dough, some nutmeg and rosemary, ginger, herbal honey
    • Taste
Sweet honey everywhere, red gummy bears, light raisins, boiled apple, here already typical Mizunara, figs, sweet milk chocolate, hazelnut, lavender, some fennel and roiboos behind
    • Finish
Honey, sweet malt, dry raisins and now drier apple with shell, here also a few tannins, medium long

    Nice Whisky !
    • Nose
slightly Spicy impression, with sandal Wood,  maybe figs, something vegetal, maybe light whiffs of turnips
    • Taste
Fruity with dates, later Marzipan and almonds enter the combo. The texture appears a bit thin.
    • Finish
      something spicy, difficult to define

  35. wisekyofcourse scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

On the nose, floral sensation, hay, peppery spices, then vanilla and a little diffuse orange and fresh apple!
    • Finish
a dram where the sodden wood is put forward and allows after a better integration of the fresh and yellow fruits.
      the caramel is very fine.

  36. lachaineduwhisky did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

    Extremely drinkable! Enthusiasm: Nose 4/5
    Mouth and finish 3/5
    • Nose
Delicate, on the caramel. Mealy. A sulfur coat? Sugar and honey. Apple, mirabelle plum? Atypical wood (leafy? No, it's the label that influences me)
    • Taste
Full, balanced, between sweet spices and caramel. It lacks a bit of impact.
    • Finish
      Easy.

  37. Segens scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Slitghly better than the Double Distilleries Version as it has more character (even if I gave same points) but not as good as the Wine Wood Reserve! A bit too oaky for me even if the nose gives a fruity expectation. Once again worth a try and an excellent start of this young distillery!

  38. Claudio + Cats scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Pretty tasty, preferably without water, otherwise too thin. He is not a high flyer, but OK for the price. Grassy, mineral, incense sticks or otherwise stupid descriptions as below, are nonsense. The typical Mizunara (Japanese oak) is light in taste, not peaty or smoky. About the description of the predecessor, I can only shake his head. Such a mess. He has no sound knowledge of Japanese whiskeys, not Japanese bottles. Almost only cheap fusel on the shelf, and a quarter of samples. I'm really not impressed by this expert status. On new german: You age, you drink, it's like grass smoking like mineral stone when wool tirgel in lamp, tasting a taste. Is wisgi like tree in Japan, full of crass big. Is good and almost niggs töier. Know that other men say the Egspert its rather big roast-meat than egspert. That understand nothing and no big anung. Vileicht only thick ass, hehehe. is chok, mean no evil.

  39. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

Interesting whiskey, older Mizunara specimens tasted better. The rather youthful malt has been run over by the oak a bit. Nevertheless an exciting whiskey, which one can also enjoy. More than an experiment.
    • Nose
Fruity sweet, with a distinct oak note, sandalwood, incense sticks, slightly mineral and grassy.
    • Taste
Very tart at the beginning, distinct oak notes, slightly sour and tart.
    • Finish
Menthol, harsh oak, sandalwood and some sticky sweetness in the background, stays quite long on oak and tobacco.
