It is clear from this tasting that the first fill sherry were among the best here, GM cask 1975 came top here with cask 1976 was 4th. The Mos is one I have had before and is excellent, (believed first fill also) and both the TWA ones are also good being refill sherry casks. Two of the DT were good but two were not as good but still got a decent score, The whisky Fassle also got a very respectable score.

It looks like Glen Grant No2 can age just as well in first/second fill sherry cask as it's still running sister distillery

A Great cask, nuff said, total quality.
This will be a hard act to follow.
    • Nose
      92 92
A heavy sherry bonanza, exploding with dark fruits, blueberry, damson, ripe dark red plum, mulled wine spice of the richest kind,
Hints of ginger and faint paprika.
    • Taste
      93 93
I added a little water which has checked the oak, so my advice is to try with water from the start.
Great balance on this one once you add a little water.
Jammy dark fruits is the order of the day here, blackberry, blackcurrant, plum and every other dark fruit you care to mention, so rich, lip smacking.
A juicy, dark fruit sherry combo that was for once bottled at exactly the right time
    • Finish
      92 92
Fades into the distance slowly, lingers with the fruit singing

    What a Caperdonich!
Surely the most sherry I have tasted, and one of the most successful. Superb balance and complexity.
    • Nose
      93 93
No surprise, we are on a superb nose. The first fill sherry works very well here.
Orange, gingerbread, a little Christmas taste.
      Raisin, orangette, milk chocolate.
A very clear smell of watermelon. It's surprising but well integrated.
      Beautiful discreet wood, light caramel.
    • Taste
      93 93
In the mouth we are on caramel, toffee, wood, leather, wax.
We are moving towards dried, candied fruit. Dates, prunes, raisins.
We have a little molasses, liquorice, black pepper, sweet blackberry paste.
A little aromatic herbs and spices.
    • Finish
      94 94
Long and delicious finish on camphor fruit. Plum, raisin, toasted almonds. A nice dose of precious wood. Candied orange, fresh mint. Sublime and endless.

This is an excellent dram, a sherry bomb but not overpowering, some herbal notes in the finish that I really like. Excellent

Ahhh, Caperdonich is already 2 times in my only 6 x 95s, that will probably mean something. Dreamcloth. One of those very rare, where one is sad to drink, because one does not want to miss the aroma the whole week ...
Meets exactly my taste, just perfect sherry with meaty notes, without much dryness or bitterness.
    • Nose
Bacon, mango, papaya, maracuja, the brain explodes with all the juicy fleshy aromas, passion fruit, ginger, cinnamon, rumrosins, demerara sugar, cumin, turmeric, saffron, cherries, raspberries, figs, dates, sweet licorice, truffle butter, dark honey , Chestnuts, maple syrup, a dream
    • Taste
Lots of raisins, light and dark, noble leather, chestnut, blueberry jam, old tobacco box, bacon, mango, papaya, passion fruit, orange and ginger jam, cherry syrup, Demerara sugar, cumin and turmeric again, sweet licorice, truffles, saffron, figs and dates, maple syrup , Parma ham
    • Finish
Eternal, astringent, oiled, old leather, chestnut liqueur, sweet, moist tobacco, blood orange, pomegranate, candied grapefruit pieces

  9. FritzeKrautman scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

A nice, intense whisky. But in my view, no high-flyer. The aromas are quite complex, but difficult to detect, the alcohol is rather poorly integrated and the massive wood influences, especially in the finish you have to like.
    • Nose
      89 89
Mon Cherry Cherry, sweetness, vanilla, cinnamon. This is followed by Christmas spices, black tea and a slightly dusty note
    • Taste
      86 86
Sharp starting with cherry and some chocolate. The alcohol is rather poorly integrated and burns.
    • Finish
      86 86
Long finish with strong oak, some bitterness and a hint of smoke.

Not the typical fruit bomb as known from the Caperdonich's vintage 1972 but for sure an example of an excellent sherried scotch! Intense, fruity, extremely well balanced and dangerously drinkable. Great stuff!
    • Nose
Intense, toffee, chocolate, sherry wood, dried fruits, dates, figs, prunes, plums and some cherries, sweet notes, whiffs of sherry wood - great!
    • Taste
Punchy, oily, creamy, fruity, cooked oranges, dried fruits, raisins, brown sugar, toffee, milk chocolate, finest sherry wood, good sweetness, som espcies, too, nutmeg, cloves - fantastic!
    • Finish
Long and warm, more spicy, more zesty, more woody notes but not drying as there is still good sweetness

    Color :
    Deep amber. Smell :
A rich, full, concentrated, overwhelming and complex whisky with notes of cedar, patchouli, sandalwood, oak, tannin, honey, caramel, toffee, leather, tobacco, sweet sherry, strong tea, dried apricot, nectarine, prunes, raisins, dates, dried figs, varnish, beeswax, antique wax, toasted bread, croissants, pear, pineapple, mango, fried banana, coconut, old books, rosewood, floral notes (chrysanthemum and lily), hay, moss, wet leaves, cinnamon, allspice, clove, ginger, black pepper, brown sugar, molasses, syrup, sawdust, stale tone, blackberry jam, mint, and a hint of raspberry Taste :
A powerful, rich, full, concentrated, mouth filling and complex whisky with notes of oak, tannin, strong tea, rich sweet sherry, varnish, leather, coffee, dried figs, dates, prunes, bitter orange marmalade, bitter chocolate, cedar wood , beeswax, dark honey, vanilla bourbon, light metallic tone, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, nutmeg grapes, raisins, rosewood, cognac, apple cider and black pepper. Finish :
A long, rich and drying aftertaste with notes of oak, tannin, bitter chocolate, dried stone fruit, muesli, varnish, antique wax and quince. Conclusion :
This is an overwhelming, fascinating, layered and complex whisky! Donders a nip feels like a mouth full. It is a very wood and tannin driven whisky and if you do not like it then you better skip it. If you like this (like me) and give him enough time in the glass, there will be something different every time. For those who find it all too intense, some water can help loosen the underlying aromas and let the tannin & wood become less dominant. This whisky can really occupy you for hours and you will not get bored for a second. I can therefore wholeheartedly recommend him. Rating :

A bit of an extreme Caperdonich, if you ask me.
    • Nose
Caper usually means a fruitbomb on the nose, but it is
not the case here. Sure, there is quite a lot of fruit there, mostly oranges,
dades and raisins, but it is overshadowed by a dusty layer of wood shavings,
varnish and oak. Cloves and cinnamon. Reminds me a bit of a rum. But very nice,
mind you! With water I get bitter orange marmalade and some garden herbs.
      Chervil, by god!
    • Taste
Wow, the attack is very powerful and spicy. Hot, even.
Unfortunately the fruit is now completely overwhelmed by the wood. Loads of
tannins. Black tea. This needs water! While it becomes sweeter, creamier and
more fruity (oranges and strawberry), the wood does keep cropping up. The
      spices remains the same.
    • Finish
The finish is very, very long, but a bit too bitter to
      make this a grand Caper.

I like this sherried style whiskies a lot. Not to compare with the also excellent Caperdonich's 1972 of Duncan Taylor. A Caperdonich to remember for a long time.
    • Nose
Wow, what a nose! Lots of burnt wood, heavy sherry and dried fruits. Cinnamon. Also some earthy and even floral notes. I never tasted such a sherried Caperdonich before.
    • Taste
Massive tannines! Warm mouthfeel. Sweet sherry followed by a lot of hot spices (red peppers). Pure chocolate and dark coffee. A true sherry monster.
    • Finish
Very long. Sweet and oaky. Some peppermint at the end.

In the nose their is a strange `earth` note
