Whisky Reviews for Ballantine's Christmas Reserve

9 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 81.02 points

  1. Marko_I did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

In the nose first fresh, fruity notes, citrus, then a little sweeter. Taste: juicy and fruity, slightly nut, a bit chocolaty on the back of the tongue. Next association: Grape nut chocolate.
All in all pretty mild and peaceful, easygoing, there is nothing scratching and scratching, I would say 40%, and - without insulting anyone - it could be a blend, rather round, "unaggressive".
    (Blind tasting 09/2014)

  2. drkrylov scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
Sherried and rich, with figs, raisins, sultanas and, finally, freshly-squeezed orange juice.
    • Taste
More fruits, oranges, apples and pears, with a nutty, gingery, slightly oaky backdrop.
    • Finish
Medium to long, with developing dark chocolate

A special blend from Chivas Brothers' Ballantine's scotch whisky, this has been specially designed for use at Christmas (so expect a greater than normal sherry influence, with lots of fruit cake aromas and flavours). Keep some handy in your cabinet for a taste of Christmas all year round.

Master blender Sandy Hyslop has deliberately attempted to capture Chistmas in the glass.

  5. John Barleycorn scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Quite a pleasant wee dram for a blend.
    • Nose
Vanilla with a sugary sweetness, orange rind and a soft sherry note,
    • Taste
Citrus with the sugary sweetness coming to the fore and a soft palate.
    • Finish
The sweetness lingers on the finish which is short to medium.

  7. Magnus Hillman scored this whisky 81 points Expert Senior

Tasted it blind and found it quite appealing but the fact that it is a blend with some young grain in it could not be mistaken.

(rating interval 78-83, one dram only, explains the broad interval)
    • Nose
brown sugar, fudge, allspice and pepper
    • Taste
Red berries (raspberry probably), oak, barley spirit and canned tangerines. Soft but appealing black pepper.
    • Finish
The finish is short and sour. The roughness is more distinct now with soft pepper and orange. Kind of harsh in the end.

  9. Tothemorrow scored this whisky 82 points Member Senior

One dram blind note, Substantial amounts of younger whiskies, but beautifully blended to get that christmas feeling.
    • Nose
Fudge, black pepper, muscavado sugar, cherries, some perfume notes and spun sugar. Water brings out som anise.
    • Taste
Bright, acidic, black currant, soft sweetness and ginger
    • Finish
The shortness typical for blended whiskies
