An extremely sweet sugar and caramel explosion. The potential whisky remains discreetly in the background. Too bad.

    Nose:
Nice and decent Glendronach. Sweet sherry, but rather hardy and nutty. There is some almond and roasted peanuts. Besides that there is some leather and a touch of varnish.

    Taste:
Quite drinkable for a 50+%ABV. It has a sweet and round taste, with tad fruitiness and a hint of citrus. But overall it is the sherry influence which is rather clear. The oloroso influence is clear. It is more on the nutty and hardy side.

    Body:
    Good: full and creamy

    Finish:
Medium-long length. There is a rather fresh hint, but overall it is a decent sherry influenced finish.

    Price:
    currently €100+ which is extreme.

    Presentation:
Don't know this was a  sample.

Definitely not a break-out Glendronach for me, but remarkably mature for 11 years, as well as different to the usual sherry bombs. Can always count on good ol` Oloroso butts to spice it
    • Nose
Immediately kind of dirty. Heavy meat notes. Roasted pork doused in sherry. Chocolate plum sauce over black forest ham? Deep and dark – remarkable for 11 years. Very dry arrival. Dates, dusty caramel, and menthol drops. With water: slightly more sweetness arrives with bitter oranges and rhubarb compote, custard pie and crème brûlée. Nice!

    • Finish
Medium-long. Herbal and tannic, with caramelized olives and espresso.

Colour: Very dark for only 11 years.

Nose: It's a bit thin, so I'm getting some nuts, oloroso. With more time some plum marmalade, a hint of christmas spices.

Body: Unbelievable how many nuts are arriving on the tongue, combined with bitterness. Kakao, coffee beans. The last one is a killer for me - in a negative way unfortunately.

Finish: The slight bitterness persists for quite a long time. Also very dry tongue.

I'm a bit disappointed since there are way better casks vom Glendronach in this age. I guess it's typical for Oloroso casks.

Lovely Glendronach at just the age of 11! Great price.
    • Nose
Lots of nuts on the nose. Walnuts and hazelnuts. Raisins, brown sugar and fudge. Cooked apples with cinnamon.
    • Taste
Again a lot of nuts, but more integrated with dried fruit. Think of trail mix. Also almonds and chocolate. Cake, caramel and vanilla. Raisins again.
    • Finish
A little bit dry. The age shows its younger self. Cacaobeans and nuts.

  12. p4blo scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Very pleasant whisky, especially considering its age.
    • Nose
Nuts, caramel, toffee, milk chocolate, vanilla, burnt sugar, a hint of prunes.
    • Taste
Nuts and vanilla that develop into caramel, toffee fudge and cocoa.
    • Finish
Long, mouthwarming, slightly spicy with loads of caramel and nuts.

  13. Snerik scored this whisky 88 points Expert Junior

A very special little malt, in the best kind of way. Wish I could go back in time and buy a bottles. I remember the price as fairly reasonable, so this is a bargain given it’s price.
    • Nose
Neat: This is a very nuty little whisky. Hazelnuts, walnuts, you name it. Marzipan, burnt sugar. There’s even some moose a slight mineral side (!). It feels like very naked nose, but funny non-the less. And some sort of melon and apples.

With water: sweeter elements presents themselves, apple pie with vanilla. The minerals are far-gone, and some of the nuts as well, but this is still a very intriguing malt. Pineapple!
    • Taste
Neat: It’s fresh and easy, with plenty of walnuts and minerals to go around. Here’s really the first sign of a classic sherried whisky, with some raisins coming through.

With water: What an elegant whisky, nuts again, but yes, pistachio, cinnamon, chocolate and mild coffee notes. Really remarkable!
    • Finish
Neat: Medium long, with all these nuts again (and a little smokey note). But it’s quite a remarkable finish, there’s a lot of character to it, and that character is on the sweeter side.

With water: A long finish, and the nuts keep coming. It’s dry, but the smoke is far-gone now. Maybe some cacao in the background as well.

    Playful and exuberant.
    • Nose
Very addictive I can not help but smell bourbon. Strange for an Olorosso ... Can it be a reconditioned drum and heavily toasted? Who knows. It is woody, resinous, sweet and fruity. The very ripe fruit. And nuts. Nutmeg, cinnamon, licorice. A good gingerbread with candied fruit.
    • Taste
We find the bourbon side. (Ok, I'm repeating myself) The texture is heavy and covering. The return is spicy and fruity. Malty / fruity. Always the gingerbread and the christmas cake. A little too syrupy for my taste. Nevertheless very pleasant, the whisky risks to be quickly disgusting. A very small lack of balance and flexibility, but very playful.
    • Finish
      Woody, malty, cooked fruit, stewed.

  17. LordBellamy scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

N: strong Oloroso, spicy but not overcooked, light vanilla (refill?), Nutty, some pepper, plum and dried fruit G: sweet sherry, slightly spicy, strong alcohol, nut and plum F: long with a lot of sweet plum with water more seasoning and nuts, less fruit - 87 points

A nose very close to the virgin oak 2002 that I had, I feel little borrowing Oloroso.
A sweet mouth, and the presence of new wood is still felt.
Final hot in the throat, and sweet.

This sweet mix / new wood is interesting.

The most nutty GlenDronach I've had so far. Less of that treacly raisin sweetness that most of the regular expressions have.
    • Nose
Hazelnuts upfront, Nutella even. Plus peanut butter. Then milk chocolate, mint, coconut, crême brullée, marzipan, cinnamon, banana, nougat and apple. After a while also some whiffs of dark fruits that are usually typical for GlenDronach come through, such as prunes and raisins.
    • Taste
Hazelnut, chocolate milk, almond, orange, cinnamon, nutmeg, plums, vanilla and marzipan. More of the typical Oloroso influences than the nose, but more bitter and nutty than sweet.
    • Finish
Hazelnut, chestnut, milk chocolate and subtle oaky spice. Quite dry.

Thanks for another great Whiskybase bottling! A lot of depth and complexity for a 11 year old. I wouldn´t recognize it as a Glendronach in a blind tasting.
Really a wonderful color and a great nose. Lots of dried plums and brown sugar sweetness. Amazing palate of a well balanced sherry cask. Malt and dry sweetness, plums and raisins. Very long lingering finish.
The Cask Strength batches by Glendronach are great Whiskies, but this one has more "personality". Very well choosen cask, guys!

N: chocolate milk, fruity - yellow fruits, yes the red apples!, some pepper and cinnamon
T: spices, pudding, peach, some blood orange and fruity
F: very dry with chocolate, herbs and there`s the mint
tasted with Aby and J J

The best 2002 edition I`ve tasted sofar.
    More earthy and herbal.
