    SMWS notes:

    Cowboy’s delight

    Cask No. 27.104

NOSE: Burning waxy candles. Butter menthols. A fragrant smokiness lingers....giving way to thick crust pastry, sour cherries, and some medicinal notes. The confectionery (artificial) blackcurrants also cracked a pleasing mention.

PALATE: The panel split a little here, with one panellist being unimpressed with a sulphury note. The other two panellists either didn’t notice or didn’t care, immediately going on to sing its praises: Honey, maple syrup, and Throaties lollies. There are some grippy tannins with this one, making for quite a textural experience, as well as a flavoursome one. As we’ve come to expect from sherried Campbeltown whiskies, it’s not all about the sherry - there’s also some maritime harbour notes, some industrial engine room notes, and that enigmatic Campbeltown “dirtiness” that is both intriguing and delightful.

FINISH: Long, warming - leaving the impression of having sipped a delicious wintery beef stock.

COMMENTS: As can occur with sherry casks, there is a hint of sulphur here, which may not be to everyone’s taste. (The majority of whisky drinkers actually have a blind spot to it!) However, it blows off & evaporates with time, and there is no denying that there’s some delicious sherry spice and sweetness to the dram. It’s youthful, lively, playful, and enjoyable...even throwing in some coastal and medicinal notes along the way, just to heighten the west coast theme. Even our sulphur canary was enjoying it by the end of the session!

UK Tasting Panel: Warm and welcoming. A polished leather saddle (and saddle soap), then marinated pork and a hint of dry tar and burnt buttered toast. Sweet then savoury to taste, with light salt and canvas; charred pork crackling. The latter becomes a gammon grill, when qualified with water, with singed pineapple and olive oil. An oily texture; sweet (pineapple again) then tannic, with a long, warming finish, lightly mentholated. A classic example of Campbeltown’s finest!

    Colour: Polished conkers
