He does not work for me without water, a maximum of 81 points. With a good shot of water it gets better, there are peppermint notes, which I have often found in Deanston, and creaminess and sweetness.
    • Nose
      84 84
Cereals, bright fruits ... Pears, spicy, nutty, nutmeg, noticeable alcohol, with water the alcohol disappears, rich mint and some pepper are added
    • Taste
      84 84
hot, pepper, light sweetness, woody, slightly nutty, weak pear, with water comes strong peppermint, it is creamy and sweet ... honey
    • Finish
      83 83
short, a bit woody, with water comes peppermint tea, the finish is much longer and more pleasant

Nice Ex Hogshead Deanston with lots of caramel! Very smooth despite of the 55%vol abv.

wenn der Ausgabepreis um 50€  lag finde ich den sehr fair bepreist - ein Malt mit Ecken und Kanten und ohne Waser leicht sprittig aber auch sehr delikate Noten
    • Nose
Eucalyptus, mint, bright fresh sawdust of fresh wood, sour lemon, pear, juice orange - buttery-waxy-creamy wood notes of fresh wood
    • Taste
deutlich spürbarer Alkohol, bitzelt etwas, schöne kräuterig cremige Holznote, Möblpolitur, staubige alte Möbel, süß, Baumsaft, Walnussschalen, Wachs, Bittermandel
    • Finish
relativ kurz - vorallem die Bitterstoffe, Zitronendropse und die Wachsnote bleiben am Längsten am Gaumen

Nice one to drink, not too complex but a very convenient taste. Not bad for the age and the price. Especially the viscosity amazed me.
    • Nose
Vanilla, wet wood (spicy), smooth alcohol with sweet sugar hints. Pleasant and intense fruits (grapes).
    • Taste
Highly viscous or oily. Sweet at first, followed by a strong bitterness turning the taste into a dry feeling. Vanilla and grapes again, a intense and strong taste overall.
    • Finish
Strong wood, more than the color indicated.

Whisky which stays on the surface. Does what young and does not yet fulfill what is quite strange for a 15-year-old whisky.
It is not bad but not really impressive either. I had expected something more from it in one way or another.

Sweet and fruity whisky, not very pronounced in smell, taste and finish.
    • Nose
fruity and sweet. Citrus, orange, apple, vanilla. And also a kind of buttery smell.
    • Taste
Lightly peppery, honey, vanilla. There is also an indefinable souriness in the background. And some wood tones.
    • Finish
Reasonably short, dry. Bitter. Vanilla, wood

Yes, I have with the nose rather located in the Highlands. Cereal notes, vanilla, youthfulness. Grapefruit is dominant in the finish, but also some coconut comes through. Pretty complex.

On the nose: not a great experience without water, even if you leave it for a while. With the alcohol faded away and some water it gets sweeter, but the nose remains kind of grainy and a little sharp. Is this 15 years? Really?

On the palate, with a teaspoon of water: follows the expectation that you get from the nose. Somewhat sweet (light honey), grain, oaky vanilla. Good body/texture.Finish: warm, medium long finish.

    Good price-value ratio.

Nice Archive bottle (fishes of samoa drawing)

Not great whisky, tastes younger than 15yo. Bit malty. Good value for money but not very impressive.

With water: opens up a little, some pepper.

    • Nose
Sweetened porridge. Buttered popcorn. Coconut. Artificial vanilla. Overripe apple. Bit of dry lemon.
    • Taste
Candied pineapple. Dry wood. Grist. Pickled ginger. More apple.
    • Finish
Quite long. Very malty. Woodspice. Vanilla.

I don't know a lot of Deanston expressions and most of them aren't good. This one is the best Deanston, still it isn't really my cup of tea. If you like powerfull sweet bourbon cask malts, this is a bang for your buck!
    • Nose
Cream and butter. Very clean and bourbon like. So offcourse vanilla. Fresh apples and candy. Also white bread and brioche
    • Taste
Fresh, young and again a lot of sweetness. Powerfull in the initial taste. Citrus, lemon, green apples. Some peppermint and ginger.
    • Finish
Apple skin and sour candy. Malt and grain.

Very malty and yeasty nose, but it reminds me quite a bit of the smell of a room full of washbacks, so there is something quite warming and welcoming about it. Certainly unique. A bit of time in the glass allowed some sweet honey and berry/orchard fruits to come through, alongside a touch of cardboard and nail varnish remover. Not straightforward by any means, and on another day I think I could have reacted very differently to it, but today it put a smile on my face. Very malty again on the palate, it almost tastes liked a highly concentrated version of a good cask ale (Marston's Pedigree or something similar!). Also a kind of strange, almost charcoal/ash side to it...once again very unique, but I'm not as inclined to give it the benefit of the doubt this time. Medium-length, musty finish where the smell of an empty pint glass lingers again. Like nothing I've ever tried before...

The fruity notes are very appealing but there is some dairy notes in the taste and the finish that I am not totally familiar with, or comfortable with for that matter. It's an experience but after the first dram I was not keen to pour another one, at least not for the moment. Strange and yet interesting. It leaves me with confusion, I will try it again. Both good and not so good at the same time.

    (rating interval 81-84)
    • Nose
Fruity on the nose, red apples I believe, cereal, salted butter and yeast. Vanilla definitely.
    • Taste
Sweet fruit and custard to begin with, good barley spirit but it feels younger than stated, the cereal is there, suddenly there is a transformation towards....could it be sour cream? with sea salt? A true shape shifter.
    • Finish
briny vanilla and still some dairy product, don't know if this is a product of the yeast? but I have never picked up this before and I'm not sure I like it (at least not in whisky).

I really wonder what that special flavor is. Never had that before. Quite nice to be honest.
    • Nose
Vanilla and pepper at first. Then typical american oak aromas. Some caramel and toffee. Also pear and fresh (citrus) fruits. A touch of menthol. Some salt as well.
    • Taste
Powerful start, surprisingly sweet and then suddenly some very strange flavor kicking in. Can´t say what it is. Very spicy, pungy. Lots of caramel, still some vanilla. A little bitter (metallic). But still sweet at the same time. Lots of licorice and ginger. Very well balanced.
    • Finish
Quite long finish, little dry. And this strange flavor lingers on. Could be the ginger/sweetness combination together with that touch of peat-smoke (which probably comes from the cask).

Somehow Deanston remains very controversial (as can be seen in the points here) and I think totally underrated (just like the Deanston 12), this one is very fruity and sweet on the tongue, medium long finish but still very good. not sure what holds people back in this whisky...I love it.

  30. Erik Elixir scored this whisky 81 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
fresh, citrus, malty, earthy and mandarins
    • Taste
sweet fruits, creamy with some exotic fruits, honey, citrus - lemon, vanilla, malty - grains and apple
    • Finish
medium drying with chocolate, spices, bitter fruits and vanilla

  31. tomy63 scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

A nice whisky, well done for a 15 years old, a pity that there is a little alcohol, very nice entry into the mouth
    • Nose
it needs a little time to open but it comes, honey, vanilla, a pastry side too (custard?), fresh fruit (apple, pear, apricot).
    • Taste
powerful, a little alcohol (I did not have it in the nose), a lively attack and very fruity, fresh, with a harlequin side (fresh fruit, pear, apricot, slightly acid and sweet at the same time), very pleasant, but it falls a little fast, the end of the mouth is more on the honey, the vanilla, the pastry chef.
    • Finish
      average length
