  1. ValeronDeportivo scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

A fine whisky, can compete with many base 10-12 yo OBs of the large producers.
    • Nose
Sweet, soft woody notes with some vanilla and caramel. Honey and a little salt are present in the background.
    • Taste
Thin body, but strong and concentrated flavour.

Feels a little young, but the spirit is clean with notes of oak, soft pepper. almonds and again sea salt.
    • Finish
      Very short, but pleasant.

Not very complex, a bit sweet, but a very tasty dram . Very much to my liking at this moment and depending the price I will certainly buy a few bottles as an every day malt. A lot tastier than many malts that try to be complex.

With a decent finish this whisky would probably go a lot better. But aside from that still a decent drink. This will match up very well with some light meat dish on a hot summer night.
    • Nose
This is rather young. Sweet malty but still a good nose. Salty. Typical old Pulteney nose. Nice, floral, quite complex for it’s (Estimated) age. Biscuit, malty, some peppers and vanilla.
    • Taste
Light Bourbon bodied taste. It’s sweet and friendly. Lemon peel, a hint of fresh oak. Again some peppers and a hint of honey.
    • Finish
Rather short. It disapears almost at the same time as you swallow. That’s where this whisky leaves a blank for me. Some honey at the back.

    • Finish

  10. LiquidThoughts scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Tasty sparkling with some nice own notes, beautiful in the summer certainly.
    • Nose
Nice bright nose, orange zest, lemon zest, light honey, some malt and flour, young oak, of course, looks halfway young, a little bit alcoholic for 46%, fresh sea salt, some white pepper, some candle wax, coconut water
    • Taste
Slightly tingling, but pleasant, grapefruit, orange zest, lemon zest, light honey with nutmeg and some pepper, some tannins, nice salt, still a touch of coconut water and some waxy, a little cocoa powder
    • Finish
Sweet sprite, lemon peel, light malt and light oak, medium long, slightly sparkling

    On-location, distillery insights:

The NAS Navigator is around 8yo with some bourbon and sherry cask use.

Handsome Old Pulteney, unspectacular but sweet, nice daily dram.
    • Nose
      Honey, lemon, flour, moist light wood, maritime-salty;
    • Taste
      Spicy-tingling (pepper, nutmeg), sweet and sour (orange and lemon), light bitterness (oak), salty;
    • Finish
      Typical Old Pulteney mustiness (from the nose to the palate to the finish), oak and salt, medium. There remains a floury mouthfeel;

  14. ctu scored this whisky 81 points Connoisseur

Pleasant Pulteney, a 46% contributes greatly.
    • Nose
Pear, waxy apple peel, coconut, acacia honey and vanilla
    • Taste
Orange jam, honey, spicy oak, cocoa, pepper and salted citruses
    • Finish
      Medium length, fresh lemonade

    Broth
Old Pulteney is a distillery that does not appear on my blog regularly. This is only my 15th. The Navigator is one of the many NAS releases from this northerly distillery in Wick. This one first appeared in 2014.
When I first put my nose in the glass, it was a bit of a scare. My eyebrows shot up and the first thing that crossed my mind was ‘broth’! Quite green and maritime. Reminds me of dry oysters (which I would not recommend by the way), dry oats, freshly sawed planks and rotting cider apples. It does not sound very good, does it? But that’s what I smell. Completely devoid of any sweetness, bar the cider apples. No, that is not really fair. After a few moments, some caramel and coconut kick in.
On the palate, it goes in a completely different direction. Orange liqueur, fresh wood shavings, pepper, sweet malt, brown sugar and a pinch of salt. Much better, but fairly dry.
The rather short finish offers mostly coconut, white pepper and loads of drying oak.
The nose left a lot to be desired, but amends are made on the palate. Still far from my favorite Pulteney, though.

    Totally dispensable.
    • Nose
Fresh and uncomplicated, marked (too much?) By a hint of acetone. Fresh fruit from the orchard, sweet spices, sea water, a little exhaust gas in the backdrop. Not really great.
    • Taste
Mouth a bit aggressive at first, and more annoying, uncomplicated. What to say? not much in fact: skinny fruits, citrus fruits (oranges), spices without splinters, vanilla milk chocolate, and always a little of this gas too present.
    • Finish
Rather short, a bit salty, unsurprisingly.

  17. Ostfriese scored this whisky 80 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Sour apples, bananas, some coconut and caramel
    • Taste
Dry, honey, malty with a slight pepperiness
    • Finish
Again peppery, with salt and hints of milk chocolate

  18. Mr.Edradour scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

This NAS dram is way better than the 12yo standard dram, due to the influence of the sherry cask and the 46% alcoholic strength.

This is a great whisky from Old Pulteney, and it was very cheap, i think it was on special, but still worth a buy at its normal price. I loved every drop of this whisky, fantastic.

As far as a young NAS is concerned, this is one of the best i have had. Plus the 46% alc is a great shout and makes this what it is.
    • Nose
Slight coconut, but lots of caramel, and old Jamaica Chocolate Bar, you know, the one with the raisins,Honey, Ginger cake and Lyon's Golden Syrup.
    • Taste
A wonderfully dry, woody texture with liquorice root. Honey and pepper on the tongue and some sweet maltiness, a little bit of a coating of molasses there as well.
    • Finish
Almost has a Cornish Cider finish to it, unusual, but very nice.

Note by Serge Valentin from whiskyfun.com:

Old Pulteney ‘Navigator’ (46%, OB, +/-2014) Colour: white wine. Nose: it’s a little more porridgy than the Lighthouses, and less oaky, so rather more spirit-driven, I’d say. Nice freshness, what we should call ‘maritime’, I guess, with even oysters. This, I rather enjoy. A little patchouli, some apples. Mouth: same feeling, this is more complex, fresher, with less sawdust and rather more salt and lemon. Some oranges, and perhaps a little new make. This should be young as well, but at least it’s not ridden with sawdust. Finish: medium, fresh, more on lemonade and spicy coconut sauce. More oak and white pepper in the aftertaste. Comments: feels young, but it’s rather very honest, I’d say.SGP:451 - 79 points.

Yummy, from the Old-Pulteney-NAS has never disappointed me yet.
    • Nose
fruity-sweet, ripe apples, banana, vanilla, slightly tingling and a good pinch of salt
    • Taste
looks pretty light and soft at first, but when it unfolds on the tongue - strong chocolaty, honey, nougat, latte
    • Finish
medium, milk chocolate and a pinch of pepper & salt

N: Fluffy grain flour, pepper heat, oily-citrus, limestone and honey sweetness. Smells young but promising. I guessed a young Springbank on the nose but could be a Bunnahabhain or almost anything
T: Starts malty and light but quickly turns to a thick and rich fruit & nut [without the nuts] chocolate with wood showing later on. The spirit is getting a bit shouty.
F: Thick milky, salty and peppery spirit finish with more raisins [not sherried] continuing to flood through. Unfortunately the young ethanol heat trashes the finish.
C: Nose = good, palate = delicious, finish = after the raisins, poor. I really like the chocolate development but for a few pounds more is the excellent and well matured 17yo. The Navigator although moorish in parts is too young for itself.

    Scores a B-.
