    Naked

I visited the Whisky Fair in Limburg for the very first time in 2018. What a blast, indeed. And every self-respecting festival has its own bottling. Whisky Fair has several each year and this is one of them, albeit from many years ago. This Glenglassaugh – with a gorgeous label, I might add – was launched in 2009. The whisky had matured for 27 years on a sherry cask, but was still bottled at a whopping 56.8% ABV.

At first, the nose offers unbaked bread and gooseberries – a strange combination, but not unpleasant. After a few moments, that evolves towards white chocolate with honey and grass. Something metallic, but without being disturbing. Light and aromatic. Spring in your glass!

The arrival is powerful, without scorching. Apples (Granny Smith), but in a liqueur. Loads of walnuts, some honey and oranges. Reminds me a bit of Cointreau, but more refined and without sticking to your teeth, if you know what I mean. I find it quite surprising that after 27 years, it seems I can still taste the barley. But the influence of the sherry cask is hard to discern. Having said that, this is a delicious whisky.

Only in the finish do I get some sherry notes in the guise of a spicy spirit with pepper, apples and honey.

Quite middle-of-the-road for its age, but maybe the wood was tired? Quite naked… although that may sound a bit silly. Anyway, thanks for the sample, Timon!

    [May, 2009]  Together with friends I emptied a bottle that I bought for 89 Euro in April, 2009.In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 85.  My notes state a difficult dram that is not easy drinkable but interesting to explore...

SergeJust in: Glenglassaugh 27 yo 1978/2006 (56.8%, The Whisky Fair, Artist Edition, 211 bottles) Colour: pale gold. Nose: whiffs of alcohol and green apples at first nosing but it all gets more civilized after a few seconds. Superb notes of gooseberries and aluminium pan (make that gooseberries in an aluminium pan) plus peonies and breadcrumb (sounds weird but it isn’t). Develops on gianduja and white chocolate and something like kirsch or slivovitz. Hints of sherry. Gets really fragrant after a moment, for we also have a little orange water and faint whiffs of cologne before it gets back to praline. ‘Nice’.
Mouth: starts vigorously, on all kinds of fruit liqueurs, hazelnut liqueur… And then raw walnuts plus again lots of praline. Strong notes of fruit stones, like in some eaux-de-vie (made out of plums). Also Cointreau. Finish: long, a little spirity and still quite fruity like an eau-de-vie. As close to that as a malt can get, plus a certain sherriness and chocolate. Rather lively at 27 yo but maybe not as complex as expected.
