Nose : Subtle. OBE (Old Bottle Effect) took its time, did its work and melted the aroma. Let's take our time too. Candied fruits, orangey notes, caramel, earthy notes. Hints of leather. Smoke.

Mouth : Diluted but tasty. Caramel, orangey notes, walnuts, earth, mint, resinous notes. Once again the aroma are deliciously melted.

Finish : Medium, resinous.

OBE at work everywhere but damn that was good. A subtle and elegant dram to enjoy slowly.

Here is your "once in a livetime dram", unless you've got a whole bottle of course...

I need to say i've had better Lagavulins, but yes it is worth a try! You need to give it time to open up. The power develops within 10 or 15 minutes and than the nose keeps on changing from raisins and ashes in the nose. So much different than the current bottlings. Keep it as long in your mouth as you possibly can and this time capsule shows you every corner of paradise... The after taste is medium to long and delivers dry tannins and peat smoke.
If i need to give it a score blind, i think i would give it 86 points, it is the fact that it is rare and from the early 70's that lot of people rate it above 90 points.

[October, 2016]  I had this dram during a "Lagavulin Bicentenary" tasting at Bonn.

In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 95.  I took no detailed notes.

There is no accounting for taste...

Farbe: Altes Gold
Nase: Zigarre und Asche, frische Tabakblätter, schwere Orangenaromen, rauchiger Tee und viel alter torfiger Sherry, leckere Kräuter, Kaffeeröstaromen mit Vanille, Haselnuss, Kohle, Schuhsohle, Leder. Diese Aromenvielfalt ist einfach nur gigantisch. Very old style!
Geschmack: Salziges Harz, rauchiger Torf, erdige Noten, wunderbare Sherryaromen begleitet von dumpfen Kräutern. Dazu Orangenschalen und Vanille, immer salziger werdend. Gegen Ende überwiegen die Kräuteraromen.
Finish: Sehr lang, trocken salzig, Tabak und Teer, leicht herbe Kräuter mit eher milder Orange, trocken torfig ausklingend.
94 Punkte (Nase: 94 / Geschmack: 94 / Finish: 94)
