For a whiskey Bottled at 40% this has a very nice mouthfeel, but as you might expect, the lower proof takes the oomph out of the rye spice, which only really shows up as tame pepper in the tail end.

Apart from that, I don't have much to grumble about.

There's still quite a lot going on from beginning to end and for me, it's all cohesive, even when unexpected things happen.

The nose has a bunch of pungent floral notes that were the first things to hit me before the red sweetness and orange soda bubbled up.

At the same time, it also has some earthy and very not sweet components that sit in the middle and are eventually crowded out by the rising vanilla.

The palate started in keeping with the nose; parading the maple and sugary cereal, but then some herbal and citric bitterness stopped it in its tracks and cleared a path for a fair amount of drying tannins to take the wheel, all without stripping the inside of my mouth.

The tannins stuck around through the tail, but more burnt and caramelised brown sugar crept back in and were then joined by a tentative suggestion of chocolate nuttiness and that docile pepper.

So far I've had the four grain, this and scotch aged in Koval barrels and I've been happy to drain the glass each time.

Not a typical offering, but definitely on to something, even if it could do with an ABV boost.

A little more strength would do him good. The fruity-spicy finish pleases, overall the rye notes are somewhat muted.

i would rather have the white rye instead of this one, at least that one had good texture, this is just boring

Hard to say ... a whiskey is not supposed to be here for the first time. Generally very hard to get used to and certainly not everyone's case. Nevertheless interesting; for me a vivid example of how complex Whisk (e) y can be in all its forms.
    • Nose
Plastic and rubber, something like a new dinghy. Then a slightly sulfuric note, something reminiscent of gear oil and very slightly solvent. Overall, he makes a somewhat oily impression.
    • Taste
Something tingling and spicy, the engine oil component remains. Seasoning, sweetness coming up, the Rye component now seems, if only slightly, through. Every now and then you can feel minimal notes of fresh oak.
    • Finish
Again, gum notes, a little oiliness and light spice. Short to medium finish, becoming drier toward the end. Not really intoxicating.

    F urchtbar. Brrrrrrrrr ....
    • Nose
Smells like a cold bath, mountain pine and sage. Smells awful.
    • Taste
Soft, sweet, some honey. Then the whole thing gets a juniper note again.
    • Finish
      Short and meaningless.
