Whisky Reviews for Highland Park 1986 AD

- I know its from a bourbon cask but Lordy it tastes like a 10 year typical Speyside malt.
I would never guess it was HP.
I found it uninvolving and lightweight but I think some will like it a lot more than I do.
Pineapple, lemon and honey mixed in with shortbread and wet hay???
Is this really Highland Park, does not smell like HP?
Also smells a bit of cardboard.
Thin, a little bitter with notes of lemon, honey and now melon,
Some sweetness does come through after a while.
Medium length, getting sweeter and dryer.
- N: Sweet dairy peat, pine needle spruce, lemon curd, sweet grainy oak, lemon sweet>sour, Speyside like, light pancakes, floury and estery. Theres a subtle touch of mineral, always heading towards sweet peat end of the spectrum with a faint medical note of old plasters.
T: Vibrant with good grainy oak showing. Pepper & chilli with touches of salt and bitter lemon. Very well balanced with quite simple and subtle notes within the oak/grain profile. Also green bananas and sour apples. Shows a much more youthful side than its 26yo would suggest. Broad and steady development, moving like a steadfast veteran.
F: Green, sweet and creamy, soft and lingering bitter/sour lemon meringue, sour/fresh wood - its all very well controlled, subtle and balanced with a thickening body towards the end. The fresh bitter saltiness bites more after a few sips as does apricot conserve.
C: Id have guessed 10-12years. The nose holds most of the curiousity, the rest being fairly simple and robust with a good [probably 2nd fill] cask influence. Excellent if a little dull. I miss the sherry influence of many of the official bottlings.
