Whisky Reviews for Clynelish 1989 AD

- A true textbook example of a well-balanced whisky coming from ex-bourbon wood. It's elegant, fresh, fruity and creamy. The finish gives a pleasing spicy warmth.
A great balance between distillate and the oak. Wax, honey and, grass, mint and cereal from the distillate, and pineapple, vanilla, coconut and sawdust from the cask. It's all rich and intense. A classic.
An oily, full-bodied, American oak matured taste: a tropical fruit basket (pineapple, banana, mango, lychee), green apple, coconut shavings, vanilla pods. Then honeyed cereals, honeysuckle, and mint. Towards the end, some pepper joins.
Spices from the oak (pepper corns), ginger, a more citric freshness, along with the same green and malty profile.
- Tasted in comparison with casks 3232 and 3233, reviewed in my blog:
A lot of smells I’d usually associate with cognac. Also some bay rum. Marzipan. Cooked fruits, mainly pineapple. Light honey. Syrup from tinned fruit salad. Sultanas. Spice here is more peppery than woody, almost like a refined Tabasco.
Very spicy. Some more bay rum. An almost meaty fruit note, similar to a classic Mortlach. Coconut. Herbal honey. Dry wood tannins. Bitter citrus peel. Creamy porridge.
Long. Very dry. Full of woodspice and pepper. Some vanilla. Bitter green herbs. Tabasco. Charred wood. Tobacco smoke.
- Nose: White wine, lemoncurd, white pepper, the classic Clynelish nose is there, but more spicy. Hint of vanilla and toffee. With water it opens up more and more and you will get more sour sweet notes. This is a very very good Clynelish nose!
Taste: Sweet lemon-icing. Sweet and sour, the classic Clynelish taste, but with more sweet lemon on top. Sweet oranges, lots of sour sweet hard candy. With water: it softens a bit, but still everything is very well balanced
Body: Full fat and oily!
Finish: Medium-long Zesty, lemon, citrus fruit, hint of pepper and a bit drying.
Price: This is worth about 150,- euro a bottle indeed!
Presentation: Don't know this was a sample from a sampleswap wit Squaadgras
Fatty vanilla, caramel, lemon zest, hint of crisp apple. Even some gravy.
Begins very soft, but soon the alcohol kicks in not in a nasty way. Harmony of vanilla, citrus, black pepper and a hint of bay leaf.
Nice medium long finish that begins with vanilla and citrus and ends peppery.
Flinty, almond oil, hessian, honey, moorland herbs. Turns creamier - salted fresh butter - and waxier. Canned pears. A little smoke. Some oak.
Fruity, sweet, and creamy. Heather honey, coconut, vanilla, wax. Spicy, herbal. More oak than on nose.
Medium long. Lingering fruit. Toasted oak. Herbal and drying (a bit too much after a while).
