    Tomintoul 40 yo 1972
    (48,5%, Maltbarn 2012, bourbon cask, 47 btl.)

Nose: like most old Tomintouls, very subtle. Fresh lemony notes, waxed oak and hints of floral honey. Underneath are warm fruity notes, say whitecurrant and dried banana. Hints of buttercups and light mint. Very good but soft. Mouth: nice fruits at first. Melon, orange sweets, lime and quinces. Almond notes. Apple pastry. Sweeter than expected actually. Nice Mānuka honey. The oak slowly appears, but the amount of nutmeg and liquorice is well controlled. Soft herbal touches in the end. Finish: medium long, minty and spicy. Still lots of honeyed notes.

This is a nice Tomintoul, a little fuller and sweeter than most of the other oldies. Highly drinkable – good selection. Around € 220.

    Score: 89/100

  2. St. Pauli scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

Wow, after so many years, this whisky stays very fresh and lively, and no trace of harsh bitterness at all. It delivers a top notch fruity whisky, that should deliver joy to any whisky lover.
    • Nose
A genuine fruit bomb! It's both sweet and vibrant. Lychee, melon, kiwi, banana and citrus (lemon and tangerine). Then: vanilla, coconut shavings, honeyed cereals, fresh green grass, and polished oak.
    • Taste
Still very much on tropical fruit and tangerine, but with more oak influence: vanilla, coconut, cedar wood, sawdust. On the arrival, there is fresher fruit (lemon), grass, mint, and some warming spices.
    • Finish
Still a mix of tropical and citrus fruit, wood sap, coconut, malt, pepper and ginger.

Very nice fruits and later well (maybe a bit to much) spiced Tomintoul. Sample from MaltMartin.
    • Nose
Fruity - tropical fruits, some cocos, waxy, tea and almond shavings. Lets define the fruits - pine apple, peaches, pomegranate, kiwi and melon. Later more creamy.
    • Taste
Mature sweet, fruity - dragon fruit, some vanilla - custard, and thyme.
    • Finish
Here comes the herbs and spices. Some fennel, cloves and basilicum.

Long matured Tomintoul can be really good. Always good to drink a dram from your year of birth.
    • Nose
Starts with a tropical cocktail of mango, pineapple and lychee. Tangerines as well. Later on hints of flowers and some lemon grassiness. Gentle oaky notes at the background. It's all very aromatic.
    • Taste
Fresh wood intermingeld with orange zests, green banana and cardamom. Resinous notes followed by honey and fruit jams. A little metalic egde, which I noticed in other old Tomintoul expressions as well.
    • Finish
Dry but quite long. Cinnamon and cloves. Liquorice. Well balanced whisky.
