An "unpeated" Caol Ila, to celebrate Mr. Stitchell's retirement.
Not only interesting and didactic to be able to taste this type of whisky which brings out the character of Islay without the peat, but in addition, it is quite simply very good.
Coastal whisky like Old Pultney or Hazelburn (my favorite whisky style).
This shows that the Caol Ila distillery is one of the very large distilleries due to the class of its whiskys.

Very very maritime: sea breeze on a wind-beaten coast, which stings your eyes and leaves a salty taste on your lips.
A little vanilla (certainly very active bourbon casks).
Very "Old Pultney" as a nose, in fact.

With a little water and time (about 15 minutes), notes of fresh cereals.

Salty and rather dry (not sweet)
    • Finish

      Salt, algae, malt, wheat.

I can't shake the feeling that the unpeated series by Caol Ila is more of a shop keeper.
This one is good, but boring at the same time.
The 18yo from the series is what I like best so far.

Somehow can't get this. for me Coal Ila and peat are fairly synonymous. A bit like the Ardbeg Kildalton in that respect.

2cl sample - a very nice surprise - CI has much to offer also in an unpeated style. It also serves as a great example to prove that location is not resonsible for a maritime nose and flavour - this is just BS marketing... even supplied by distillery managers around Scotland - why?

Very full with good punch. A highland CI at its best - stay away if you are looking for peat and smoke...

Lovely complex and interesting insight into what drives the spirit of Caol Ila.

    • Nose
Powerful, golden and dusty malt, some scents of lemon and then vanilla.
      With water, toffee notes.
    • Taste
Warm and powerful malt, supported by vanilla.
    • Finish
Aromatic profile similar to the above, with caramel as a bonus.

It is always interesting to be able to taste the Caol Ila distillate without peat. Nevertheless, I was not transported more than that.

      Enthusiasm 3/5

An odd bird this one. A non-age statement unpeated Caol Ila. Typically unpeated Caol Ila carries an age statement but not this one and its youth shows. One of the more potent whiskies I've had and it could have used a bit more age to take the edge of. The heat on the finish tends to wipe out the preceding taste(s) still on the palette. Alright so here we go:
N: Through the thick alcohol fog that blows off this one you get vanilla and butter. I am struggling to detect any fruit here.
P:A kick in the nut sack right up front but step over that and there is honey and caramel beyond. Shades of smokiness. Wow. Potent
F:Hot and quick. A little bit drying too.

Definitely one to finish with. Your taste buds can become a bit singed from the raw nature of this one. Still, it was kind of fun.
