This is a bit of an atypical Ben Nevis. She needs time to open.
    • Nose
Rubber, sulfur, chocolate, wax, garlic, raisins, grapefruit, meaty, coriander, parsley, honey, orange marmalade and lemon.
    • Taste
Meaty, sulfur, grapefruit, tobacco, hazelnut, ground coffee, bitter chocolate, parsley, wax, orange marmalade and lemon zest.
    • Finish
Medium, meaty, sulfur, tobacco, hazelnut, coffee, orange marmalade, chocolate and lemon zest.

A bit of a weird one. Not the typical sherry and/or Ben Nevis character I'm used to. Some fruits are there, but a bit hidden. It's more delicate..layered...not straight into your face. Caramel is definitely here. Something slightly burned/luciferesque (in a non sulfur way). It's definitely an interesting drink. I'm gonna enjoy this one.

    Rotting Meat

The Ultimate is a series of single casks from the Dutch bottler Van Wees. We try their 21 Year Old Ben Nevis that matured on a sherry cask. Judging by the color, it was a refill cask. It was cut to a drinking strength of 46%.

Hmm, the first impression on the nose is ‘no…’ because it is immediately very sour, almost astringent and reedy. Something of rotting meat… surely that cannot be intended? Underneath I get some honey and pistachio nuts. Pears and mandarins and – do not laugh – curry ketchup. Either my sample is flawed or otherwise this is a very weird Ben Nevis.

It is light bodied and tastes mostly of praline, almonds, gooseberries and mocha. The fruit comes from the citrus family. This is actually quite pleasant (after the disappointing nose). Fairly spicy on cloves, nutmeg and some chili pepper. Turns bitter rapidly, though. Too bitter to my taste.

The finish is fairly long, warm and spicy, but too bittersweet to be truly pleasant. I quickly reach for a glass of water which is never a good sign.

Let-down in my book, especially on the nose.

not bad at all, but indeed a dirty touch to it. Some soapiness for a wee second, some sulphur for some seconds, but it's manageable. I can see myself scoring it an 88 on a good day, and an 82 on a worse day. But interesting

Nose nut, bitter almond, wet wood, faded flower, Jura rapelle. Austere mouth on wood and vanilla. Medium final very bitter. Not for my taste at all.

    Ben Nevis 1992 - 2013, 21 years, 46% alc.
Bottler: van Wees (limited to 695 bottles)
    Removal: Sherry Butt no. 2312
    Region: Highlands, Scotland

Nose: Perfect entry, powerful and spicy. In addition to a hint of smoke, especially dry fruits such as dates and raisins, dried figs. This is followed by a complex seasoning, accompanied by dark chocolate. Beautiful.

Palate: banana and dark fruits, with apricot. Very dry, coffee notes and milk chocolate. Winter spices.

Finish: Very long and again very dry, with a slight fruity sweetness, but especially oak.

Conclusion: An almost too perfect Ben Nevis. Unconventional, but typical and in the overall view a top whisky.

    89/100 points (tasted 2014, approx. 75,00 €)

A product a bit austere and bitter, quite caramel.
    • Nose
Honey, caramel (quite heavy), lemony touches, some wood and vanilla.
    • Taste
Green apple, bitterness, sugar. Some touches of dried fruits (hazelnut), vanilla, honey and some cinnamon.
    • Finish
Average length, on caramel, wood, green apple and pear. Maybe a bit of bitter almond essence.

Straw color. On the nose the sherry is
discreet, butt refill probably, hazelnut, cream, honey, lemon,
vanilla, caramel. Mouth on vanilla, honey, dried fruits, made
a little young but original, well in the style very "highlands" (if it
means something) from Ben Nevis. Final a bit too bitter, honey,
    cinnamon, sweet but good length.
