The quality of this fairly complex and engaging Single Malt from the Isle of Jura is clearly diminished by intense coloring (E150a) and its low bottling strength of 40% ABV. Orange peel, dark fruits and toffee can be found on the nose, supplemented by heather honey, ginger and a hint of salt. Jura 16 arrives heavy, sweet and full-bodied with rich spices, bitter chocolate and some well-integrated, earthy cask influence in the development. The finish is delicate, prolonged and bitter spicy. However, given the lack of intrinsic quality, this whisky is overpriced.

    • Nose
Vanilla, sweet, sea breeze, honey, ginger, marzipan and sherry
    • Taste
Fruity, sweet and earthy, slightly bitter orange, dark chocolate, coffee
    • Finish
      Medium length, sweet and complex

Very complex malt, you have to take your time to figure out everything.

Sweet, pleasant Allday dram. PLV completely ok.
    • Nose
Pleasantly soft, ripe summer fruits. Honey, vanilla, some oak and chocolate. Also mineral notes.
      Very tasty nose.
    • Taste
Weak and velvety. Honey, vanilla and fruits again. Sweet with a very light impact on the spicy.
    • Finish
Short to medium, some orange, caramel, coffee.

I think it’s ashame that Jura is so underestimated in my opinion. Sure there is the 40% with some expressions and the colouring (although they say to only add e150a to the whiskies below 16yo), but when you look behind all this, there still is a very decent and drinkable single malt. And i guess when you’ve been there at that remote place on the planet, see and experience their extremely small island community and enjoy the company of the people there, you will enjoy and appreciate this single malt a lot more..

By the way, this whisky really profits from oxidation in the bottle. Give it some time :)
    • Nose
Friendly and subtle. A little warm. Orange Peel, herbs and slightly peppery. Some sherry notes and fresh nuts, peanuts. Appears to be quite complex despite of its 40% strength. Slightly smokyness in the background. Not peat smoke. More like a cosy campfire.
    • Taste
Initially very smooth, a little light and watery but quite quickly this changes and gives you a nice silky and well rounded mounth feeling. Fresh oranges, wood, vanilla and peppers. Spicy at the end.
    • Finish
At first quit spicy, peppery and a little dry. Spicyness continues. Slightly buttery, Short-medium length.

In the nose it is a bit too mild, in the mouth but then a really delicious whisky and priced fairly with 50 € / liter.
I would imagine that with a higher strength it would be a really bitter story and you would prefer that with a standard bottling and accept the loss of the smell.
    • Nose
Pretty weak on the trunk, I just had the 10s (or even the glass stand here), the 16er dares in comparison not at all from the glass, there it needs panning, good persuasion, time, a drop of water ... then some salt, pepper, ginger? ... cinnamon, toffee ... later some old leather, dry wood. Pleasant, but on a very cozy level.
    • Taste
Here, fortunately, more abundance and intensity, despite only 40%: sweet, a touch of blood orange, dark chocolate, brown sugar, down to earth leather, sweet tobacco ... round, delicious and full-bodied.
    • Finish
long, very sweet and dark chocolate, a hint of pepper at the end, zero bitterness

Tasting from a half-empty bottle, uncorked 19 days ago. Duration about 45 minutes, the key became rounder and more interesting in the course.
Tasty, inexpensive stuff without corners and edges, overall a little less enthusiastic than in the first bottle almost a year ago, but still good 4 stars with plus tendency (88/100)
    • Nose
      88 88
Vanilla, sweetness, honey, sherry with nut and almond, next to it earthy-dark and indicated maritime, later also citrus and industrial aromas
    • Taste
      89 89
creamy, sweet with well integrated oak flavor. Dark chocolate, malt, earthy tones, clear barrel notes
    • Finish
      87 87
medium length, warming, initially becoming a little bit bitter, later sweet again with chocolate, ginger and oak seasoning

    It was nothing.
You can taste the caramel and yet the whisky remains watery.

    • Nose
      83 83
Soft, spicy, fruity, like a soap store or mint, light incense, light vanilla and citrus ..
    • Taste
      84 84
Soft, spicy, citrus fruits, green apple and sweet red apple
    • Finish
      84 84
Green sour and red sweet apples, citrus fruits, spicy, but unfortunately a short finish.

Aroma: wine and bread tones, then, the first thing that comes to mind is “old age” !: old dusty books, antique lacquered furniture, withered foliage; then sweetness: brown cane sugar, burnt caramel, flavored pipe tobacco, cocoa with milk, roasted malt, roasted walnuts, orange peel, some oak tartness and sourness, wet boards. Very diverse and good.
Taste: attack of spices: mainly cinnamon, cloves, a bit of white pepper, burnt caramel, sweetness, cocoa, candied orange peel, grapefruit bitterness, dried fruit compote.
Finish: basically the continuation of taste - the same spices, and noble pleasant bitterness, oak tannins. Finish, though not short, but very lightweight.
    Rating: 85
The result: a very good molt, from aroma to finish, calm, measured and quite complex. I didn’t have enough degrees in it, quite a bit! Well, he would have at least 43, maybe the taste and finish would have been brighter ... But I want to buy it again, and this is the most important thing!

  10. larswehmeier scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Strongly fragrant aromatic nose. Sweet malt, strong honey. Strong and mature. Then it becomes maritime with seaweed and salt and also earthy-spicy towards celery and root vegetables.
    • Taste
Mild and soft on the palate but earthy and spicy in the taste. Dark chocolate with a pinch of salt. Some oak
    • Finish
Mild and aromatic. Fine bitterness. A little espresso.
