  4. Falnor scored this whisky 75 points Connoisseur

Does this 10 year old improves because the higher ABV% instead of the normal  choice of 40/ 43%? I liked the idea, but the outcome is not so good.
    • Nose
A little punchent smell full of citrus, what changes into a sweet and malty core. So squeezed lemon first, drop of oranges and after that some fresh baked bread, a little sugary pastry on the side and you've got yourself a sunday breakfast.
    • Taste
Bitter grapefruit with some anise. Unripe fruit, green apples. Cookie dough, still raw. Very young really. Very spicy, not not too pleasant. Dare I say peat? Not much actually.
    • Finish
Fades away quickly into a sour and bitter fruit with unbaked dough.

Still more fruity and less sherry on the nose, but then the taste is turned around and you can clearly feel the Oloroso influence, including the nutty aroma.
    [86 - 82 = good whisky -> get (second) bottle? Perhaps...]
In this case, the sample is enough for me... it's not bad, but it's not a revelation either. If, after around eight years, some of the 3,000 bottles are still being sold by normal retailers, that says enough.
    • Nose
      87 87
bright fruits of mealy apple, fresh apricot and pear. Appeal of plums and some tart orange.
Honey sweetness, partly also hints of marzipan. A floral note emerges behind it, which somewhat hides the HP-typical heather; but becomes more concise over time.
A strong spiciness comes to the fore (nutmeg and some cinnamon), at the same time a few (garden) herbs and maggie herb appear, transporting the sherry aroma.
Nutty aromas of hazelnut, walnut and Brazil nut with a time delay.
    • Taste
      86 86
fruity onset, then transitioning into a peppery spiciness that brings enough herbal aromas with it. Tart notes of dark chocolate.
      Creamy viscous mouthfeel.
Second sip: more sherry now in the foreground; Herbs, darker fruits, creamy again. Here too there are again tart echoes without drifting into bitterness. Typical Oloroso flavor comes through.
Heather is perceptible in the background, but doesn't put its stamp on the whole thing.
    • Finish
      81 81
Nutty aromas are retained for a medium to long time. Then some oak load and tannins from the sherry.
With the second and third sip: the nut drifts more and more into a tart, almost bitter note (walnut skin and green hazelnut); but stays just in the limit (for me).
It also stays in the mouth for a long time.

Aroma: medium saturation, sweet, honeycomb, boiled condensed milk, fragrant dry herbs, slightly burnt wood. Further, sweet orange with zest, vanilla and pastry pastries, bran. Light smoke is well integrated and goes in the background to everything, a little sulfur and salt.

Taste: honey-citrus, red pepper, cinnamon, cloves, orange marmalade, toffee, burnt caramel, woody bitterness. Here the phenolism is brighter than in the aroma, smoked dried fruits.

Finish: spices, zest, charred wood, burnt caramel, goes into a bitter taste - a bitter medicinal tea, medium length.

    Score: 86

Bottom line: very good, from memory, a reinforced version of the old 12-ki - honey, toffee, herbs, a little haze. Balanced HP, smoke does not stick out and does not take attention to itself, but goes in a complex of other tastes.

This whisky is what you get when you press "upgrade" button on the standard 10yo. It's also essentially the same price as the standard version where I live in, so it's very good bang for your buck.
    • Nose
      84 84
Significantly improved from the standard 10 year old, which I've found very thin on the nose in the recent bottlings. Still a typical HP though, citric, slight peat, a bit of custard.
    • Taste
      87 87
The arrival is citric, with a hint of chocolate and smoke in the mix. Compared to the standard 10YO, again, significantly better. A bit of cream and sugary pasties.
    • Finish
      84 84
Fairly short, but not bad. A bit sour, but balanced nontheless.

    Color: deep gold

Actually I was interested in what is behind the 90 points of the oracle from Alsace, but that was the 10 with 40% ... Quiet HP, with (ex-bourbon) wood was not stingy here, everything was hidden, otherwise you can't complain. 86 points.
    • Nose
A much juicier and more floral HP version, very nice. Malt, tree sap, linden and lilac flowers. Fragrant soot, ginger tea.
    • Taste
Malt and resin, otherwise rather lax, distant smoke, cold ash. Linden honey. Thuja hedge, more ginger tea, lime peel.
    • Finish
Medium. Vanilla, tree sap, dry wood. Candle soot sticks for a long time.

    www.thewhiskyexchange.com:
Highland Park Ambassador's Choice was chosen by Danish brand ambassador Martin Markvardsen. Originally released in Sweden, it has now been given a more general release. Aged for 10 years, in a combination of American oak bourbon barrels (70%) and oloroso sherry casks (30%), this is sweet with the smoke that the distillery is known for.

  15. Dor scored this whisky 86 points Expert Junior

In my personal opinion, this bottle is one of the best VFM you can find.
    Very balance, and quality.
Fantastic nose: honey, citrus, vanilla, gentle typical H.P smoke.
Taste: same vanilla, honey, citrus, wood, very round.
Finish: medium, still citrus till the end.

Good product, but a little young.
    • Nose
Toffee, original werthers, honey, with also floral notes, including some heather. Rather pleasant and engaging. Light green apple freshness
    • Taste
Beginning of disappointing mouth, on alcohol, bitterness, vegetal. Then we find, with a certain smoothness, the notes of the nose (toffee, caramel) and a little dark chocolate.
    • Finish
      Smoke of coal, toffee, heather

Lovely whisky. Nicely balanced, fresh, spices, somewhat fruity, but not too fruity. I like this best on a warm summernight. But also nice on a winternight to remember the summernight :) Lovely taste. I like it better than the normal 10yr, which is very nice too.

Senior Brand Ambassador Martin Markvardsen chose  mainly bourbon casks for this HP-edition. Quite exceptional  because Highland Park normally matures on sherry casks.

A more than decent pick by Martin Markvardsen. The nose is excellent, especially before it gets musty. The taste is nicely balanced, but the finish is where this whisky falls short. It would've scored a couple of point higher with a longer, more complex finish.
    • Nose
A farmy, and also oily and waxy quality. Reminds me of some Clynelish. Barely any peat. Hay, grass, oranges and also a bit malty. Very fresh and appealing. I like it a lot, but after ten to fifteen minutes it does become musty.
    • Taste
Peatier than the nose, but still very subtle. It is grainy, there is some tree bark, something earthy as well. Herbs (mint) and citrus surface after a couple of sips.
    • Finish
Spicy and peaty, but very short. The least enjoyable aspect of this Highland Park.

  25. pilgrim77 scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

Initially very sweet and malty/yeasty nose, with softer notes of peat smoke and the traditional HP heather/honey only sneaking through after a while in the glass. Quite different in that respect to the standard 12yo OB. A drop of water released additional hints of citrus fruits and accentuated the malty/yeasty aspects. Tastes much younger than 10yo on the palate, with quite a raw, feisty nature. Rather thin and mono-dimensional, lacking the softer elements I associate with the 12yo OB. Medium length finish with only just a small hint of the HP smokiness I love. Given how cheap you can pick up a bottle of the 12yo OB in supermarkets etc these days, I couldn't justify paying extra for this bottle.

Tasting notes; Nose: vanilla or butter cookies, marshmellows, barley, balanced smoke. Palate: The sweet and sour smoke typical of Highland Park is immediately apparent. Behavior is shown by spices and even a hint of absinthe is noticeable. Finish: a typical, young, vigorous and "wild" Highland Park. (Glenfahrn.ch)

  28. Magnus Hillman scored this whisky 81 points Expert Senior

It says 10 years old but I would have guessed much younger. I had this dram after a 15 YO Tobermory which feels much older, and that might have affected the outcome. I rather buy the 12 YO even with 40% ABV.

    Rating interval (79-83p)
    • Nose
the first thing that hits me is the smell of a bakery, could be vanilla or butter cookies coated with sugar. Marshmellows, perfume, barley spirit, balanced peat.
    • Taste
The balanced HP peat is there, sweet on the side of the tongue but rough and edgy. Careful spices, not really developed and a hint of absinth on the back of the palate.
    • Finish
The finish is short and for the first time I start to lack the balance. I can feel the spirit, it is bright without substantial flavors to back it up.

Obviously, the finnish is a bit shorter than this whisky deserves. But, I'm more of a scent still. In retrospect, I realize that alcohol has consistently been absent.
    • Nose
Burned wood, hay bales, single. Raw sugar. Cut lime. Unbleached thick paper.
    • Taste
Butter, and so licorice. Lots of sweet liquorice (liquorice tubes from the "grub o mixed" bag). Smoke that does not feel in the nose, but as in the whole gome. Kind of ash, but mixed in a little bit of butter. The feeling of oak, as if it were older than 10 years in any case. And so clear the honey, as found in all HPs that are not too heavy sherry-influenced.
    • Finish
Someone wrote "comlpex along with balanced", I agree. Let's add that the finnish is so well balanced that you almost lose the complexity of it. A little anise lies far behind the tongue.
