    S 6
Spicy & Fruity & Young. The chilli kick on this one is real, not something for the lighthearted drinkers. The nose reminds me of Oloroso cask and virgin oak on the palate.

[78-82] Good buy when I've extra money to spend, most whisky stays within this band.

    N 25
Waving vanilla pod to start with. Then rich summer fruits (plum, ripe banana). Then raisins, honey, and cinnamon powder. The base is however quite spirity.

    P 24
Spicy oak attacked the palate up front with chilli, nutmeg, and star anise. Then the underlying fruitiness slowly surfaced with a touch of astringency on the edges.

    F 23
Mid, dry finish. Spicy & hot (chili & black pepper). Again slightly astringent.

Not bad whisky, but my weakest Kavalan after the NAS.
    • Nose
Punch, honey, caramel, sherry, raisin and dark fruits. Spicy oak.
    • Taste
Sour cherry, vanilla, bitter almond, herbals and anise. Spicy oak.
    • Finish
      Medium length, spicy, sour.

good stuff, I really like this kind of profile now and then. very fresh, clean. and the price is ok.
    87/100
    • Nose
after the very good "sherry oak" yesterday I´m quite curious about this one.
intensive fruitiness on mature tropical fruits.
      pineapple, overripe bananas, mandarins, quince.
really only a hint of nail polish remover which even adds some freshness. I like it very much although it lacks a bit of depth
    • Taste
very good , more or less same feeling as on the nose, very juicy and mouthwatering, ideal summer´s whisky. the wish for a bit more depth and length also remains on the palate.
    • Finish
a bit short, after a substantial arrival it falls down relatively quick. but it´s very clean

Warm weather rapid ageing has allowed this whisky to develop and integrate some interesting tropical flavours and depth, but its youth is still fairly obvious. The usually spot on ABV of 46% feels pretty boozy here, and whilst a dash of water reduces the hostility, it also detracts away from the expansive fruit flavours. Perhaps I just didn't find the precise number of drops to add?!

[November, 2014]  I had this dram during a "world whiskies" tasting at Bonn.

    In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 82,5.  My notes state a shy nose and a slightly drying (tannins) taste with some sherry flavours.

Nose:- Lightly heated, rich honey and dark fruits. Creamy and soft caramel. It is like smelling on a delicious dessert. Palate:- Intensely sweet, touch of sour fruits and creamy, like vanilla
ice cream with berries topping. Well mouth coating. Seductive. Finish:- Vanilla carried on till the end, smooth and short-medium
length. One dimension and direct, but this is really delicious.

Pretty OK but in the same price range and level I would prefer the Podium

My first whisky from Taiwan. Interesting. The finish is too bitter for me personally.

Well-rounded Taiwanese single malt, nothing to say. A good one.
    • Nose
Overtly fruity, a bit waxy, clayey; certain amount of minerality can be easily recognised. Dried sultanas, dried apricots, papaya, green banana, kiwi fruit pulp, faint soapiness drifts by behind, polished wood. Later, all the dry notes become more prominent. I am nosing dried grass/hay, scorched earth?, dry wood.
    • Taste
Crisp. Mainly herbal, vegetable, with a touch of wintergreen in the midst, eau de cologne like, has got that piny, somewhat mentholated mouthfeel. Bitter sour yet soft on the tongue, full of plain and comprehensible flavours.
    • Finish
Medium long, vegetal, bringing out herbal spices, coriander leaf(?), citrus fruits like orange, tangerine, then fades on cardamom tea, lime oil, spearmint?, jasmine tea.

Pleasant to drink, nicely balanced between wood and fruit.

    • Nose
Candied oranges, pineapple, banana, grass, some honey, some vanilla, some anise.
    • Taste
Oak, hazelnut, lemon, some pepper, prickles on the tongue.
    • Finish
Medium oak and a little dry sherry.

  17. Falnor scored this whisky 74 points Connoisseur

This whisky tries to be too much it can handle. Their other entry level bottles like the ex-bourbon or concertmaster are much more focused. This fails in complexity.
    • Nose
Divers but mild. Sweet rolls and other dough and pastry. Some vanilla, cream and milk chocolate.
    • Taste
On the palate not as light. Far more oak and spices. Green herbal leaves, tea. It lacks focus as it wants to be complex, but remains a little bit of everthing (or nothing).
    • Finish
      Very short, vanilla and oak.

  19. Archer scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

The nose had to hope for a stronger palate. Nevertheless, this is a tidy (summer) whisky from Taiwan.
    • Nose
The nose is sympathetic and gives hope for a fruity taste. Banana and mango dominate the fruity sweet nose.
    • Taste
In a milder form, the fruity nose is found on the palate, but not as strong as the nose and the 46% hope. Some bourbon vanilla softens the fruit sweetness, which, however, remains decisive on the palate. At the end, a little mild pepper and sweet pepper show up.
    • Finish
After a short peppery rearing, the King Car Conductor disappears.

  20. Volanne scored this whisky 78 points Expert Senior

The nose was quite appealing, but the mouth is a bit too oaky if you ask me. Remains rather decent whisky though.

    Tasted from a 2014.03.26 bottling
    • Nose
Starts rather friendly and bourbonny, with some dried apricots, sawdust, and light orange blossom honey. Turns drier and grassier after a while with some rooty notes (angelica?) and a little juniper.
    • Taste
Quite hot given the low ABV. Hot and quite drying. Very oaky and spicy, with lots of sawdust, white pepper, and some cinnamon. The sweeter side shines through though. A low-sugar baklava?
    • Finish
Quite long, with a grassy bitterness. Overinfused tea.

Orange nose, chocolate, almond cream. Dusty sherried oaky palate that evolves on notes of milk chocolate. Long final on the orange with a little green wood unfortunately in very last note. Good but far from Solist.

The next one on my Kavalan list is the King Car Conductor, the only bottling which bears the name of the company behind this up-and-coming distillery from Taiwan.

A nice nose, but the rest ... forget it.

I strongly recommend to give it some time to breathe.
    • Nose
Sweet with complex tropical fruity and perfumed aromas at first nosing. Flowery with notes of vanilla and oak becoming stronger and more dominant after some time.  Fragrant, changing a lot, but the nose is very nice.
    • Taste
Sweet and fruity at first contact with the tongue, then quickly becoming dry, oaky and quite bitter. Dominated by oaky and orange aromas, Austere.
    • Finish
Long on notes of strong, dry and bitter tea, becoming more and more unpleasant.

Less oaky and bitter after it had some time to breathe.

  25. granella2003 scored this whisky 70 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
A touch of papaya, banana and
green apple, just to name a few. Pleasantly floral, delicate and complex with depths and
      multi layers of flavors.
    • Taste
      Sweet, rich, vanilla,
banana coconut but usefull, a slight pleasant bitterness balancing the
      sweetness
