  1. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

The nose is terrific, then it gets a bit bit bitter at times and there is a little lack of strength in the mouth. Probably owed to the 43%. Still fine old fashioned whisky.
    • Nose
Nose: different league like the DEs. Old spicy, old dusty oak, honey, orange liqueur, some ripe yellow fruit, minimal sherry, but the nose exudes a certain patina of old whisky.
    • Taste
Mouth: soft, tart, orange notes, tart oak, also here rather older, good, but not quite holding the nose.
    • Finish
In the end, here, too, orange and tart oak notes, mild and soft, malty, light smoke, the fruity counterpart is missing a little, a little mint, tart oak.

He does not really agree with me. I once had a rather old bottling of the Selected Reserve in the glass. I liked it pretty much. This one does not really convince.
    • Nose
Brown sugar. Caramel. Dark fruits. Here are dried plums. Sour cherry jam. A certain floral touch also comes through. In addition, a disturbing note that somehow reminds me of plastic. Furthermore wet leather and tobacco.
    • Taste
The start is very restrained. Aronia honey. Grape juice. Kirsch. Then comes the oak and brings chocolate and spice into play. Light earthy notes.
    • Finish
      Tobacco. Dark chocolate. Tree bark.

  4. Dude1971 scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

You have to take your time for it. Very pleasant mouthfeel. No sherry bomb - dry with a light sweetness.
A little more alcohol might have done him good.
    • Nose
      Creamy, sherry, dry wood.
It takes time for the aroma to develop.
    • Taste
At the first sip of dry sherry, soft dry wood, slight sweetness.
It takes time and then come out more Geschacksnoten - leather, some coffee, some tobacco
    • Finish
      Medium length, dryness and sweetness.

  5. Mascht scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
      Sherry, dense, oily, mild
    • Taste
      Wood, soft
    • Finish
      short to medium, oranges

  6. Kantenmechaniker scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Much more complex than the 12-year-old standard whisky. The distillery contains 16-25-year-old whiskys, which I do not doubt after the tasting.
    • Nose
Here is actually Sherreinfluss recognizable (which was not the case with the 12), dark fruits, nuts, plums and raisins, trail mix, some iodine, the basic character of Royal Lochnagar is still good to feel, malt, vanilla and in the foreground hay and green apple,
    • Taste
Over all grassy Heunoten, quite mild, spicy oak, which brings some dryness, this stands against the Sherrysüße, which comes along with inlaid raisins, some salt is also to taste
    • Finish
always salty and yet sweet, grape skin, medium long

LMDW tasting note: Color: Dark amber. Nose: Deep and complex. A symphony of fruity and floral aromas invades us. In the background, there are intense notes of butterscotch and a freshness coming to balance the wood. The nose continues to evolve and develop. Palate: Lively and firm. It is marked by chocolate and butterscotch. Finale: Long, gourmet with notes of licorice and praline, it still remains as malty. The rose and the violet bring a touch both heady and aerial. It is punctuated by tobacco, ripe fruit and sweet spices. Comment LMDW: Floral, fruity & woody, Royal Lochnagar Selected Reserve is an elegant and refined malt, a sumptuous digestive that will be enjoyed preferably in the evening. Launched in 2007 to commemorate the first visit to Queen Victoria's distillery in 1848, each bottle is numbered. A very limited cuvée, it is also an excellent gift idea of exception.

It is complex and balanced, but doesn't blow you away. I would love for this whisky to be bottled at a higher strength, because I think that could make it go from a good whisky to a great whisky.
    • Nose
It's well-balanced. Plenty of spices, some brown sugar and dark chocolate and a hint of saltiness. It's leathery, there's oak and it's also surprisingly fresh.
    • Taste
It has a bit of that meatiness that made Mortlach famous. The whisky is very smooth with notes of oak, malt, red fruit and some spices.
    • Finish
A lovely hint of barbecue smoke that just doesn't dissapear. There's also some orange and cereal.
