[April, 2000]  I had this dram during an Ardbeg rarities tasting at Rolandsbogen.  The price of this fine tasting was as low as 180 Deutschmark (90 Euros) plus 70 Deutschmark for an excellent four-course dinner.

In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored this 95 points.  My notes state it has a very intense and delicate sherry driven nose.  The body and finish is a perfect balance of sweet sherry and old Ardbeggish flavours (the latter are completely different to today's Ardbeg profile, much softer and smoother).

It was an extraordinary decadent line-up this evening:

    • Nose
Very fruity, red fruits, subtle smoke, and oak.
    • Taste
You definitely taste the age. Oak spice and fruit dominate, with a faint wisp of smoke. Dry.
    • Finish
Very long and dry with lingering red fruit.

This one is a very dark Ardbeg - actually the darkest I have so far but I just bought the new Ardbeg Dark Cove Committee 2016 - let's see which one is darker

OK, the Ardbeg Dark Cove is not really dark - it's more like deep copper. This 1964 or the Ardbeggeddon or some others are definitely darker.

Actually not a typical Ardbeg at all - in particular there are no peaty-smoky-coal-lemony notes. This is more like an old Macallan 15yo from the fifties or sixties. Therefore I really like this one too because it is very drinkable and enjoyable. Great whisky!
    • Nose
Toffee galore, also notes of roasted coffee, citrus fruits, oranges, vanilla, sherry wood, deep and intensive but actually just really faint notes of peat and smoke - Superb!
    • Taste
Liquorice, oily, sherry wood, toffee and coffee again, chestnut, some faint leather notes, subtle sweetness, almost none peaty or smoky
    • Finish
Medium long, rather dry in the end
