Whisky Reviews for Highland Park 1988 SV

Had I bought an entire bottle I don't think I would have been disappointed, but this can't beat HP's OB 25 2006 or 2012.
    • Nose
Review based on a sample compared side to side with HP 18 and a 1985 28yo Cadenhead HP. Woodier, varnishier than the current 18yo OB. Old painted chest. A little shy to start with, let's see how it develops. I get a lot of middle-aged ex-bourbon notes so it's probably a bourbon hogshead. This is a bit lighter than the 18yo, golden, and next to this the 3 years older  Cadenhead is rather pale, kind of like young ex-bourbon but bending a little to green.
    • Taste
Pineapple/peaches? A little smoke. At 1 teaspoon of water this already seems at good dilution. Doesn't cut the tongue much and is very aromatic, heavy and flavourful. This is quite good actually. Some surprisingly saccharine sweetness like a bit of homemade marmalade. This is a bit more tannic than the 18yo but works just as well. Burning paper or woodsmoke on the taste, and less of that floral edge now.
    • Finish
I feel the finish is where this well beats the regular 18yo. More full and less watery.

  2. Jean-Brice scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

is not the most complex but highly enjoyable
    • Nose
Explosive, fruity, very slightly peaty and earthy, some dried fruits
    • Taste
      very oily, sweet

  3. Jevan scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Overall, I really like this dram. It is not spectacular but given what I paid for this, a 25 year old HP, I think it delivered a great drinkability with a perfect balance of sweet and salt for my tastes. Late eighties - 89
    • Nose
Herbal, heathery note up front, light freshly sawn oak but not overpowering, barley sugars, a little honey and some leather, quite what you'd expect from a Highland Park with water little change
    • Taste
Nice balance of sweet honey with a background of saltiness. Very light peat earthiness comes through later.
    • Finish
Medium long with a lovely fullness and earthiness giving way to a real salty maritime feel
