    One word: great.
    • Nose
      91 91
Mega fruity: banana, grape jelly, honey sticks to the tongue.
And of course the sweet tree sap that is so typical of Turret.
    • Taste
      91 91
Nectar, sweet nectar, pear juice, honey.
    • Finish
      90 90
Almost tannin-free, but elegant spice, with a harmonious finish.

    Kiwi

Glenturret is a distillery that does not appear on my radar often, but recently my whisky buddy Manny offered me a sample of a 30 years old. Could not pass that up, obviously. It was bottled several years ago by the Meadowside Blending Company under their ‘The Maltman’ label.

The nose is very pleasant and sweet on vanilla, lime sorbet, fresh kiwi and polished leather. A lovely note of wine vinegar (no, really), orange liqueur and fresh cherries. Some cocoa butter and some coffee grounds. Quite good, in fact. And it can cope with some water, which makes it just a tad more sweet.

The arrival is creamy and feisty. First some vanilla and kiwi, than pepper and some allspice. Then the oranges kick in, with a vengeance. Lots of zestiness. While it does not deliver completely what the nose promised, it is very interesting and rich. A touch sweet and sour and some stale ale at the end, but it works. Diluted it is somewhat sweeter, but sharper as well.

The finish is long, spicy and sweet. A touch grassy with a feisty peppery note at the death.

The nose is complex, but that is somewhat lost on the palate. The finish makes up for that. Great release, but quite impossible to find nowadays.

    Glenturret The Maltman

    1982 30 jaar 46%

Glenturret 30 yo 1982/2013 (46%, The Maltman, bourbon, cask #258, 242 bottles) Four stars

Colour: gold. Nose: wackier than the 1986, that is to say starting more with butter and cream, a little wine vinegar, sour lemon juice, Swiss cheese and beetroots. It's a very singular malt whisky that really develops on vegetables and roots, although there's also a little orange blossom water, oriental pastries, bergamots... That side tends to grow, all for the better.

Mouth: sharp and almost pungent, fruitier and much more citrusy than the 1986. It's actually like the zests of 10,000 oranges, lemons and grapefruits that you would have squeezed. That's right, it's almost like quaffing essential oils. Huge palate.

Finish: long and now grassier. A cocktail made out of Jaegermeister and Cointreau, 50/50. Have to try that one day. Some pepper in the aftertaste.

Comments: another one that's truly spectacular and pretty extreme. Feels like more than 46% vol.

    SGP:561 - 85 points!!
