Whisky Reviews for Bunnahabhain Darach Ùr

  1. Gloin scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

The smell is fresh and I like the pronounced vanilla in it. As is often the case, this whisky is less complex in the mouth, but it consistently continues the impression of the smell. Also the finish adapts. A nice whisky, which, however, carries no trait of Bunnahabhain in itself and shows little recognition.
    • Nose
Immediately vanilla and the smell of sweet yellow apples rise into the nose, a distant memory of apple seed, honey and now also with a light citrus note, all soft and rather sweet, at the end some grass and wood are added, but the vanilla dominates. The light acidity of the apple and citrus notes have an appetizing effect.
    • Taste
A soft, creamy body and a gentle onset with hints of sweet bread dough leads to notes of white pepper, tender oak and vanilla. The fruit notes from the nose are also there, but weaker pronounced.
    • Finish
Also on the finish is the vanilla, somewhat bitter now, combined with a slightly bitter note, but not of chocolate, but rather of beer, medium long.

I miss him with the special something that I could dock on. He flits so through, does not hurt, but it is rather unsettling.
    • Nose
      84 84
Bright fruits and a salty breeze from the sea. There are candied pear pieces and green apples. A lot of vanilla. Honey.
    • Taste
      83 83
Crème Brulée and marzipan. Chocolate and coffee beans. At the beginning still quite creamy, it quickly becomes dry and shows some wood. The focus is still on the chocolate note. Little fruit, only honey sweetness and vanilla.
    • Finish
      83 83
Not very long, dry with malt, chocolate and sugar beet syrup.

Nose and taste start high, but the finish is decline for me.
    • Nose
Sweet, apple, vanilla, toffee and spicy oak
    • Taste
      Sweet. Vanilla, raisins, spices
    • Finish
      Not too long, drying, spicy

Although not very varied and he has no surprises ... but it is a good solid whisky, which has no real weaknesses.
    • Nose
Oak, vanilla in the background some apricot,
    • Taste
first very sweet, then vanilla then wooden barrel. Finally, a more typical Bourbon flavor. Mild and pleasant creamy.
    • Finish
long finish very dry. I can only confirm that with the glass of water after a sip.

    Woodspice
This Bunna, for the travel retail segment, matured on new American oak. It is surprisingly dark.
That new American oak offers quite some sweetness on the nose, in the guise of vanilla, baked apples, overripe banana and farmer’s butter. Sweeter than expected, I must say. There is also quite a bit of ginger and hints of oak – all of it within limits. Nice, inviting nose.
The body is rather light and now the cask clearly takes the reins. Still sweet on vanilla custard with raisins, but the ginger and pepper become very loud. The woodspices are king, that much is clear. And it prevents the true Bunna character to remain hidden, which is a bit of a pity.
The finish can be called long, but it leaves the mouth completely dry. So much so, that you will long for a glass of water. Surely that cannot be the goal?
Just a tad too much influence of the cask in my (not so) humble opinion.

The sweet nose is nice, but I don't really like the finish. 83/84.
    • Nose
Apple, almond, vanilla, peach candy, strawberry, caramel
    • Taste
Almond, caramel, apple, strawberry, vanilla and peanut.
    • Finish
      Almond and a little peanut.

None of my favorites. Overall, one-dimensional and too little variety. The fixation on the fresh oak aroma, the missing, otherwise Bunnahabhain-typical smoke - that's not my taste.
If you like the "Fine Oak" series of Macallan and wish it with more maritime influences, you might like it.
    • Nose
Lots of oak, a hint of vanilla. The oak aroma but predominates. With a lot of goodwill maybe a touch of green apples in the background?
    • Taste
Surprisingly sweet and mild, I had not expected that after the Nosing. The vanilla is here in the foreground. But then again the oak and salt. No alcoholic note. From the usually so typical smoke of this distillery is to be noticed neither in the nose, nor on the tongue something.
    • Finish
Medium. Again, at the risk of repeating myself, the oak comes to light. Add a light spice. Again, very mild, without alcoholic notes.
