    Sample.
    • Nose
A sweet damp smokiness. Had a Glenkinchie 10 just before this one so I could find a bit more smokiness and Islay character then I would have done otherwise, I think. A rich fruitiness, overripe fruits. The sweetness a bit weird to me, sickly almost. Sea salt and chocolate.
    • Taste
Good balance between spirit and cask and I could take quite some watering down too. Spicy and mouth coating. The heavy sweetness is here too off course. A little smokiness and peat too.
    • Finish
Medium to long finish. Nuts, peat, sweet dry fruits. There is a taste of some kind of candy which I can't remember. Very good, to me the finish was the best part of this dram.

Top class Bowmore, the combo with the peat and port is a magical match????????

    • Nose

Big fruit (a distance away from the glass). Actually nosing, blueberry is prominent. Molasses, smoke/smoked potpourri, possibly smoked whiting.
    • Taste
      92 92
Tannic/dry. Dark fruit, brown sugar. Smoked caramel.
    • Finish
      95 95
Toffee. Coffee. Caramelized brown sugar. Smoky, as if the other notes were prepared over a campfire.

  8. EvilAFI scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

Sweet blueberry pancake syrup and the clean Bowmore smoke work well together.
    • Nose
      89 89
Sweet blueberry and clean smoke, honey, light spice, a oaky char
    • Taste
      91 91
Nice and coating, first the sweet mixed berry jam, then the oak and spice, the peat adds but doesn’t dominate.
    • Finish
      90 90
Warm and lingering, the peat and abv make this hug your throat for a nice long time. The aftertaste is a nice sweet smokiness.

Oh boy, here we go!!! The Port smell is amazing!!! Reminds me of these old casks straight from the Douro Valley. The dusty, loaded of spider webs ones. Rich, melted red fruits, clove, muscad, vanilla, very sweet. I think the maturation in port is very interesting with Bowmore (also other islay distilleries).
    • Taste
Softy start with growing spices and a bomb of flavors kick in. So tasty, the smoke is coming right along to let you know, hey friend, this is Bowmore calling. Rasberry liquor, very well balanced, you know this is 20y + if your a casual bowmore guy. Lots of port influence but it remains open to the distillery caracteristics.
    • Finish
Very delicate finish, you can twist it in your mouth forever. It stays full and tasty. Its hard to find a mistake in here. Wonderful edition.

    • Nose
nuts, fruits in chocolate, smoke is very pleasant and combined with other flavors
    • Taste
fruit in honey and with spices, juicy smoke, no soap!
    • Finish

Smooth and soothing peat. Dried fruits, caramel. Strangely some duck-fat, but that's certainly not a bad thing - just unexpected.
    • Taste
      87 87
Spices and dried fruits, before the peat slowly rolls in - a powerful, bold experience. Woody thereafter.
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium-long. Dry mouthfeel. The peat just sorta hangs around, with no real development in any direction.

Perfect mix between the and Port and Bowmore. The fruits complete the already very good character of the Bowmore.

Very good, but needs about 10 minutes to open up. After that it stays, port is obviously dominant. Very good.

Tasted at Spirits In The Sky 2017 13/13

About a half year ago I tasted this one, and it wasn't that good as expected. So let's have a new try!

Still not that good, but better then last time. I do like Bowmore, but this one just isn't my style...

  29. Malinois scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Expected much more, the best part are the first seconds of the finish. The rest is mediocre: nose some salty sweetness and maybe some smoke, a dull nose. The pallet is really thin: quite sweet with red fruits and a smokey side. The finish: initial the best part: salty smokey red fruits, after a few second it becomes water thin in an eye blink.

  30. Tobi2100 scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

Water brings me nothing. I love Bowmore this is the distillery on which I can most agree with my brother. So keep your fingers crossed and we'll forget the price very quickly.
    • Nose

    • Taste
Ash, sweet strawberries, red fruits, some oak (not too much)

    • Nose
Much port and oak in the nose. A light orange and vanilla note settles on the strong, spicy barrel. The 50% Alc cool the nose a bit. The aromatic smoke is minimal and fades out of my nose in a fraction of a second.
    • Taste
In taste, the first thing you will encounter is the 23-year-old barrel in the form of an espresso, followed by a light acidity of orange and a light honey sweetness. The port is here only a marginal phenomenon, the smoke no longer exists in the taste.
    • Finish
The finish is warm, full and long. Now only the spicy oak clothes the mouth. A few nuts remain on the tongue.

Nose: This is a rich dram no doubt. And a true Bowmore from start to finish. Lovely smokiness with a Parma violet filled whiff of smoke. Rum soaked raisins and BBQ marinade. Rich sweet smoky and savoury, with a bit of sea spray saltiness.

Palate: Again that Parma violet note I’m a bit sensitive too. Very perfumed sort of. With a nice smoky touch and deep sweet thick dark chocolate and ripe cherry feel to it. Some blood oranges and peppery sweet meat marinade with plums and also some tannins.

Finish: Dark chocolate. Parma violets. Ripe orange, and a whiff of smoke.

This is for Bowmore die hard fans with a bit too much Parma violets for my taste, but Good stuff nonetheless . I would recommedn this one to those who REALLY like Bowmore, as to pay 380 quid! for a 23 year old… and those who do not mind the extra Parma violet notes.

Sherry's typical nose, peat is discreet. Mouth very tapering and very fragrant. The marriage between the distillate and the Porto cask is a success. The final is long. Good but the q / p is questionable.

  39. Noface83 scored this whisky 90 points Specialist

Nose: Cold campfire, made with a bucket of salt water, sitting on the extinguishing fire we enjoy candied red fruit, to cover the smoke a bowl of fragrant oils was made warm, the oily smell of orange peel and a hint of lavender now rises and fights with the Campfire smoke for our attention

Taste: the whisky spills over my tongues with a light sparkle, a true orchestra of flowers and blood oranges plays with my taste buds a smoky, tender symphony of enjoyment. The finale once again delivers the fruits and the maritime in a duet that unfortunately ends rather quickly. The smoke from the dream returns to the cold reality of the now extinct camp fire.

With a term like "Fehlnote", one should also handle more than careful ... Otherwise, good criticism, it is difficult, if such terms are then there to come against. And as I said, just taste nothing of this bottling and make me so my thoughts, from reviews of other bottlings ... If there are too few contributions to the taste here ... a pity, that's why I still say my opinion;)

N small tip to the tolerance.
I have a little problem with your review here:
    http://whiskybase.com/whisky/43520/1989
because exactly that demotivated some people to post their own impressions on WB at all and there are far too few who do this ...!

The false note "violet oil" in particular - this is perceived by some stronger, by others weaker, by others even still. Similar to sulfur ...
For example, I am extremely sensitive to violet / soap, but I can tolerate sulfur well and actually feel only hydrogen sulphide as unpleasant (marsh gas, spoiled eggs, etc). In this respect I am grateful ASWhisky for their own impression as none of the other violets mentioned ...

    Relaxed greetings.
    c.

  44. TommyKI did not rate this whisky Newbie

sry, but it may be that Bowmore once had a problem what you can describe the false note "violet oil". Have it now but min. 1x too often read here, especially in this bottling is in my view absolutely no "false note" to complain about. But good, compared to the standard 25er the price is a bit cheeky ...

  45. ASWhisky scored this whisky 78 points Connoisseur

the false note may not afford a 23y at this price
Bowmore did not do it a favor

    Wow, what a wonderful
Bowmore. Pity about the price tag, though. Around 475 EUR. Doh!
    • Nose
      Oh, yeah! A fantastic
nose on candied fruit (mostly blood oranges), rhubarb, plums and organic
chocolate. Candied sugar and a hint of espresso. Red fruit signs in. Think strawberries
and a bit of cranberry. Nut oil. All this under a blanket of wonderful smoke.
      This is absolute top!
    • Taste
      On the palate, it is
mouth coating, softly spices on pepper, nutmeg and cinnamon with a wonderful
fruitiness that is not overpowered by the sturdy smoke. Au contraire. The smoke
allows the fruit enough room to play around the taste buds and create a juicy
whisky. Red fruit, but mostly blood oranges. A touch flowery (hey, this is
eighties Bowmore after all), but luckily not soapy. A bit of top notch heather
      honey makes it almost perfect.
    • Finish
      The finish is long,
      smoky and very juicy.

Just filthy in the mouth (and the 3 people present with me when I tasted were of the same opinion as me).

It is shameful for Bowmore to sell such a bad whisky at such an exorbitant price.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: A fabulous smoke simmers above a warming stew of plums and oranges.Palate: More peat develops on the palate, but it doesn`t overwhelm the fruits within.Finish: Drying and delicious.Overall: Very good indeed. Bowmore fans, get ready for something spectacular with this one!My comment: Tasted at the Whisky Live Paris 2013 Fair. Good but... too much expensive.

    - Rich, smoky and very complex. Plum skins, black cherries and dark

chocolate are interwoven with wood smoke and sea-salt, seductive

sandalwood and walnuts thrown on a roaring fire. Taste

    - A swathe of rich smoky velvet brings luscious layered autumn fruits,

tingly winter spices, blood orange and sensual winter black truffles. Finish - Long and rich with smoke infused blood orange, truffle and walnut oil.
