Nose

This one's hugely more peated than I expected, and the peat is very straightforward. It lacks marine notes, oiliness and boot rubber which leaves that turfy, dry and nose tickling reek dominant.

Taste

The mouth could use a bit more oomph. Not in peat - there's quite enough, but the wood could've given it just that bit more definition. I'm not moaning because it's not good, it's very much so, and just a bit more would've made it a 90. Now I'm stuck at 88. I like the way this is in every way quite a bit brighter than Islay peaters due to the BenRiach fruitiness. There's something here like anise, eucalyptus or similar. A little rockiness and farminess (yep, manure) too.

After opening my last remaining sample much later I notice the manure thing develops quite strong on the nose if I add too much water.

Finish

The finish stays for a while and here the otherwise relatively quiet cask shows the most.

Comments

Transferred to a more active cask at some point it could have become extremely good while a finish would've made it Just Another Finished BenRiach. Now it's a good BenRiach, no more no less.

A single cask 1994 vintage Benriach which was aged for 19 years in a hogshead, this has notes of melon and pineapple. Just 215 bottles came out of the cask. This is the first UK exclusive single cask release from Benriach for a couple of years.

Producer`s Note

Nose: Intense waves of spiced oak with creamy vanilla over
apricots and peaches, all backed by a delicate, sweet honeyed peat.

Colour: Deep harvest gold.

Taste: A combination of delicate soft fruits and sweet oak
spices, covered by dramatic bursts of intense wood smoke, which mellow and
mingle with hints of melon and pineapple in the lasting after-note
