I find this an nice exotic twist on a scotch. For a standard entree bottling with a affordable price, this has quite a lot to offer. And I noticed that it improves considerably when the bottle is opened for some time. Add to that the lovely design, and you have good whisky that is fun to explore.
    • Nose
      84 84
This feels spring-like, fruity and fresh, while also earthy. I find nutty notes of brazil nuts, walnuts and pistache. Add to that koriander, and sweet exotic fruits such as lychee, mango and bananas. Top that off with spiced pears and apples.
    • Taste
      86 86
Again this is celebrating its roots with an exotic spiciness and tropical fruits. In particular curry poweder and cinnamon come forward. The fruits mainly consist of mango and banana. I also notice a slight sulphur note, but that is perfectly kept in balance. More spices with nutmeg, koriander, marsala.
    • Finish
      83 83
The finish is fruity and earthy, with a wood dust and drying fruity aftertaste.

    Batch 2:

This bottling can certainly be praised a lot, but I find it a bit daring when it comes to being brilliant. However, the lively youth combined with the rich maturation can very well convince and makes you want more.
    • Nose
Juicy resinous mango, sandalwood, sweet vanilla complements, sticky barley, coconut almond biscuits, canned peaches, sugared apricots
    • Taste
Honey, crème brûlée, almond coconut biscuits, white chocolate with dried pineapple, the mango is now candied, demerara, baked banana, ripe kumquats, young oily barley
    • Finish
Neatly long, roasted almonds, deep toasted oak note, light rolling tobacco, sandalwood, strong malt note, rooibos with sparkling spices, ginger, star anise, cardamom, a perfumed jasmine blossom aroma rises up the throat

    • Nose
      83 83
Vanilla, brown sugar, apple, canned peach, mango, cinnamon and a little pepper. The bourbon influence is clearly noticeable. This is definitely okay!
    • Taste
      81 81
Peach, caramel, vanilla, noodle nut. Other than that, not much happens here.
    • Finish
      80 80
Fairly short and flat. Some peach remains.

Not a bad whisky, but far from special. The nose is nice, then it goes downhill.

  5. Malthead19 scored this whisky 71 points Connoisseur

    - unfortunately not so brilliant... somehow disappointing
    - would have hoped for more flavors
    - drinkable but rather thin in taste
    - even about 40€ are still too much for him
Taste, there are significantly better Scottish singles out there
    malts
    • Nose
      fruity exotic impression, quite subtle,
still looks quite sharp, some nougat in the background
    • Taste
Spicy attack, oak, a lot of spice developing in the mouth, plum, few fruit aromas, little complexity,
you can clearly feel the 46%
    • Finish
      short spicy finish ;
      medium length dry woody aftertaste

  6. Nazin scored this whisky 71 points Expert Senior

A little bit too malty, but overall not that bad.
N: malt, vanila, caramel, cinnamon, peaches, honey.
T: sweet, malt, caramel, honey, cacao, spices.
    F: ginger, oaky, honey, alcohol

Light golden color. Medium oily whisky.
    • Nose
A lot of malt. Sweet aroma. Vanilla. Caramel. A pinch of spices. Light spice. White pepper. Maybe cinnamon. Later some fresh fruit came out underneath. Over time, a little more ripe, yellow fruit. Peaches came out.
    • Taste
Pretty sweet. Malt. Vanilla. Caramel. More bitterness over time. Cocoa, dark chocolate. Oak. Lots of spices. Black pepper. There is an oily feel. More fresh fruit the second time. A little ash next time.
    • Finish
Cocoa. A pinch of spices. Ginger. Vanilla, caramel. Traces of an oak. However, cocoa dominates. Medium-length finish. Honey. The next time, more spice and spices.

  8. MarcinCh scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

    Light golden color. Slightly oily.
    • Nose
      79 79
Pretty intense. Very caramel. Definitely towards the bourbon, even quite a fresh barrel. Maybe a little malt. A little pepper. Something like a distant trail of smoke in the background.
    • Taste
      79 79
Lots of caramel. At first, something like a light balloon. Lots of spices, but they don't interfere too much. Black pepper. Lots of caramel again. Maybe some bitter oak.
    • Finish
      77 77
A trace of smoke. Caramel. Slightly warming up. Lots of spices. Black pepper. Medium-length finish.

  9. Don Cassi scored this whisky 78 points Expert Senior

Blindly I would have placed my nose in Speyside: a lot of honey, light, sweet and sour fruits, floral notes, a little malt and vanilla. Overall very present and full, but also a bit boring and simple.

Intense sweet and sour in the mouth, with an additional spicy and chocolaty finish with muted fruit notes.
    Length: 3/10

Nice drinkable and intense Indian without great complexity, whom I would have blindly identified as Balvenie.

    Grade: 2

Paul John Brilliance. Consumed August 2018 - my first Indian whisky I believe. Aroma is fudge, honey, apple. Nice. Taste is spicy yet smooth with very little alcohol showing up. Breathy fudge and salted caramel. Very drinkable and pretty enjoyable. Quite decent - priced at around the right mark at under £40 for 70cl. 3.2/77

Entry level malt from paul john is a good sipper.

I get wood shavings, citrus fruits, other sour fruits like gooseberries on the nose. There is also some cashew fruit juice.

The taste is sweet and sour with tropical fruits, fresh wood and this freshly prepared dough note. Finishes with spices. A little ginger and slight bitterness

  17. maltaholic scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

    He smells much more pleasant.
    Ripe, full-bodied, aromatic.
    Oak, slightly fruity.

    Tasty rather spicy.
    A nice wood taste.
    He is soft and round.

    I like him...

B: floral sensation, then pastry spices with a little nutmeg, honey, we find orange and a little mandarin and lemon too
F: malty, cooked orange with zest, a little cocoa for a feeling of sweetness.

It's lemony and spiced with some mixed grain and malt. A little more astringent and oaky than my last bottle. In my opinion, it's not a bad whisky, but not an overly impressive one, either.

Honeysuckle and orange blossoms, dry grains and fresh bread dough, lemon zest and allspice, malt and vanilla pod, and oak.
    • Taste

Honey and tangerines, dark chocolate and malt, slightly under-ripe white and green fruits (pears, guavas, and nectarines), nutmeg and allspice with a touch of vanilla, and salted candied lemon peel.

Nose: young malty spirit, juicy blood orange with a sprinkling of grapefruit, already neat wood with aromas of sawdust and drinking chocolate spiced with spicy cinnamon. As expected from an Indian malt, which has ripened briefly and intensely in the climate, the wood dominates and the basic character is still very immature.
Taste: sparkling onset, is getting creamier, milk chocolate with cinnamon and pepper, pistachio, very dry and woody almost no fruit. Also on the finish wood and bitter notes dominate, cocoa powder and at the back comes out again some fruit (multivitamin juice). The finish is medium long and quite pleasant / tasty. Here is more maturity and age taught as he should have from the paper but that comes simply by the strong wood note.
My first Paul John and I have to say that is quite successful, although of course without much depth and you have to be on wood flavors. But you should keep an eye on the distillery. There are certainly some great things from India coming towards us.

    • Nose
fruity-nutty barley aroma, seems to be very young but but it is a very pleasant nose with peaches and mangos, oolong tea and hints of tinned pineapple. reminds me very much of several bere barley expressions I have tasted up to now. after a few minutes in the glass a floral component joins in. also some shellac. really not bad in my opinion.
    • Taste
a little sharp without water but a punchy attack full of fruit.
a drop of water helps to soften it a little. the same peaches, it still reminds me of arran bere barley. macadamia nuts, honey.
    • Finish
rather long, medium sweet, still fruity

He is delicious, surprisingly good, mature enough, the cocoa-fruit combo pleases, tasty ... and with 40 € still quite cheap, even more for an exotic. This is a potential permanent candidate for the alien shelf.
    • Nose
very pleasant, gentle sweetness (cocoa powder, nougat), with tropical-fruity freshness (physalis, blood orange, mango)
    • Taste
Cocoa / milk chocolate, cinnamon, a little nutmeg - sweet, creamy and tasty ... there is still a green-tart fruity note on the back of the tongue
    • Finish
medium long, some white pepper, milk chocolate ... and here again something exotic-tart-fruity

Lovely creamy, fudgey-sweet nose. Some white pepper spice and yeasty toast.

Initial taste is really creamy again, then quickly into a slightly bitter development. Restrained white pepper spice, before mellowing out into a nice cereal note.

    Thoroughly enjoyable.

A wonderfully complex, well made, and characterful whisky. The company representative I talked to was notably helpful and knowledgeable. Apparently, this whisky is about 5 years old and matured mostly in 2nd fill bourbon casks. Definitely worth a try, in my opinion.
    • Nose
Mango skins, orange zest with malt, green fruit (guava), and a hint of walnut oil. With 10 minutes, a savory herbal note appears.
    • Taste
Cereal with dried mixed fruit and spiced fruits (cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg with apples). With 5-10 minutes, honey-spice shows up in the development.

A surprisingly mature whisky with a good price / quality ratio. It is the first whisky of Paul John I've tasted and I must say I am pleasantly surprised. It is not a overly complex whisky but a very accessible dram that’s deliciously easy to enjoy.

N: Clearly young and spirity but nutty too with hazelnut shells, its definitely the shells, not the actual nuts with [Highland fruits] also. Good, simple nose.

T: Firm arrival, not refined but just about holding itself together. The grain is the first to show followed up by oak and clear signs of good casks at work.

F: Nut husks into chocolate. Spirit dominant but controlled [just]. Good strength, about right.

C: Clear indications of character building.

    Scores a C+

    July 2015

N: Sweet yet broad cereals reveal a fruity depth of peppered raspberries, melons, bubblegum, soft strawberries and lemon oil. Simple yet intoxicating ‘Opal Fruits’ malt.

T: Spirity arrival with a sour development on lemon, vanilla and chlorine. As I’ve experienced with other Indian malts, this isn’t always the best part. It does however improve massively with water.

F: Spirity, sour, challenging finish but with some more tasty coco, aniseed, vanilla sponge cake rewards at the death.

C: After a rousing nose, the rest is so-so.

    Scores a C

    The palate exceeds
the rather weak nose and in the finish this proves to be a nice malt too, but
nothing more than that. Friendly priced with a tag of less than 40 EUR.
    • Nose
      The nose is very
grainy. Think cornflakes, but drenched in a mildly sour cream. Something of wet
stones reveals itself. But I can hardly make any association with fruit. Well,
maybe some lime. Oh, and a bit of apples after a few minutes.
    • Taste
      It is a lot more
fruity on the palate. The malty heart is surrounded by apples again, but also
some mango and even some star fruit. The spices rear their heads. Think
cinnamon and nutmeg. Quite creamy. The sour cream is replaced with a sweet one.
      Caramel and honey kick in.
    • Finish
      In the medium long
finish, the spices offer a little extra bite.

  41. granella2003 scored this whisky 79 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
The youthful nose has structured malt and honey which mingles with a floral overtone all seemingly pinned down by a cork-wood wrapped in banana leaf with a light drizzling of vanilla infused caramel. Cereal and buttered toast with a hint of cinnamonFresh with an immediate coastal familiarity.
    • Taste
At first quite creamy then quickly develops some good spice of mace and nutmeg mixed in with the honey found in the aroma. There is a tropical fruitiness mid palate which never becomes too prominent, instead being overruled by well structured vanilla and oak.More
cinnamon with Chomp bars and citrus
    • Finish
      Honey
and gentle spices.Lots of delicious vanilla and a final hint of sea salt caramels
