Nose : Fruits (a combo of bananas and apples), precious wood, hints of vanilla and tobacco. A bit closed at first but it opens with aeration. With water, it's more fruity.

Mouth : Creamy and waxy. Honey and citrus. Spices from the oak.

Finish : Long, spicy, sweet.

Very good nose. Liked the mouth too. Maybe just a tad sugary sweet, especially on the finish. Excellent whisky anyway.

Reviewed by Serge on whiskyfun.com (12/8/2013): Convalmore-Glenlivet 36 yo 1977/2013 (58.2%, Cadenhead, small batch, hogshead, 288 bottles) Five stars This is Cadenhead’s new one, obviously. The fairly recent OB was a 1977 as well and it was great (bottled 2005 – well that’s not too recent, is it – WF 89). Colour: full gold. Nose: ah. Can one mix tar with vanilla and chocolate? That’s all I get at first nosing, all other aromas remain very tiny, almost negligible (maybe tobacco, maybe mangos, maybe bananas, maybe grass, maybe almonds). Water is needed. With water: oooh! The best use of water, the whisky does ‘the peacock’s tail’, on many fruits and spices. The oak woke up as well but I guess that was unavoidable (old wood, musty wine cellar). Great nose. Mouth (neat): big, what do I say, huge crystallised lemon and tangerine on a bed of wax and paraffin again. Very creamy, oily body. Maybe a little mead too, orange blossom… With water: fab fruitiness, especially ‘green’ fruits. Carambola? Lime? Finish: maybe not the longest, but it’s clean, fruity, complex and the honeyed aftertaste is lovely. Comments: there aren’t enough around but maybe, I said maybe 1977 was to Convalmore what 1976 was to Benriach and 1972 to Caperdonich? Elegant fruit bombs… SGP:751 - 92 points.

Nose

Ooh, this is a nice nose, although unexpectedly sharp. Milk chocolate with vanilla filling is the first thing I smell, followed by green banana, maple syrup and coconut. It is a bit bourbonny, if you know what I mean. But add a teaspoon of water and it will turn into a fruit bomb like Caperdonich from the same era. Icing sugar. Something of moldy would (very nice), giving away the age. Great!

Taste

Bam! I just lost two teeth. What a kicker! Very spicy and even waxy. Mostly on coconut, oranges and some nuts. Very creamy indeed. Mouth coating. Diluted, I get a fruitbasket with lime and starfruit in the lead. De spices become a little sharper. White pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg.

Finish

The finish is fairly long, spicy, but dry.

Comments

Great nose, followed by a good palate and finish. Nuff said. Just under 300 EUR, but it is hard to find already.

Have now returned.  Yep - needed time to develop in the glass.  The aromas on the nose are now there in droves on the palate.  Banana, toffee apple, coconut, fruit basket, flambe creme caramel, banoffee pie, lime drizzle in the background. Upgrading the original score. It`s complex and rewards time. Careful with the water - a little helps bring out some fruit and citrus, but also lets some bitterness in, which can encroach too much.  I reckon this one might develop in the bottle a bit too.  Really grew on me.

Nose - banana, fruit orchard, bubblegum/opal fruits, faint vanilla, distant citrus

Palate - The fruit is there, but the % alcohol too high to fully express itself.   Needs water (takes a lot of water), goes vegetal (green peppers) but water also brings out some quite significant sawdust. Some mild bitter tannins/tea at the end.
finish - medium to long, bitter, fruit is struggling to hold on here.

Just at the end there was rather more fruit coming through, and things weer getting a bit sweeter - I think this one needs time to develop in the glass, and I rushed it a little. I still have half the sample left - will return to this.
