Despite 61% strength, this is not as "violent" as you might think.
Typical PC with noticeable smoke, slightly rounder than other variants I have tested.
Vanilla, honey, some black pepper, with a warm mouthfeel. A little simple for my taste.

    • Nose
Starts with scorching pungent coal smoke, salt, sweaty rubber boots, mud, lots of peat, ashes and a hickory-like sweet or rather burnt cake ?. Later catchy crustaceans with lemon juice, tidal pools, hike through a rocky outcrop.
Very modern and surprisingly chocolaty with water. Much peat smoke, farm in the rain, ferns, ashes, salt and saddle soap. Really fantastic.
    • Taste
Lush smoldering, peat smoke, ashes, salt, mud, old stables, burned beef, bracken, Tabasco and sweet accents.
Peat smoke with water, ashes, salt, herbal tinctures, old farm in the rain.
    • Finish
Peat smoke, phenol, saddle soap, bracken, roasted chestnuts and dark chocolate end in a long finish.

    Powerful intense Islay whisky
    • Nose
this typically fat peat from Port Charlotte, slightly sour, sweet peat, vanilla. A great nose. Not tamer with water, maybe even mineral and a little bit of sea.
    • Taste
strong, intense, sherry or wine barrels?
    • Finish
peaty, strong, very nutty (there must have been any wine barrels)

  16. Dram Brigade scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

A tasting sample that i kept for quite sometime... its time to give it a try!
    • Nose
Fruit bomb?! Fresh apple, pear, dark fruits. Follow by chalk, car interior polish, honey, sugar cane syrup. Wet interior, shoe rubber outsole, some dry coconut flakes. All these with peat smoke at the background. This smells exactly like the mini grocery behind my house! After a sip, new car tyre with some over ripe fruits.
    • Taste
Wow, balance peat, earth, honey, tabacco, sweet fruits, vanilla, coal, rubber, little black pepper. Oily, tounge coating... suddenly red chili!
    • Finish
Medium long, with ashes of mini grocery and some red chili! Oh and some black rubber bitterness.

The feeling of going to the grocery behind my house.. without going there!

      I like this, Alot!

Does not have the overwhelming effect on me like the first try a few years ago. But it is still a top whisky, strong and complex, without blemish and blame
    • Nose
strong phenolic smoke in correspondence with ethereal freshness. Pear, hay ... getting sweeter after a few minutes
    • Taste
Sweet smoke with slight pungency and hints of vanilla, honey and pear
    • Finish
Long and warm, slightly bitter at the end

Vegetable, the peat is very green. Iodé, we feel his relative youth. Very nice texture very thick, surprisingly the mouth is sweet with a little bit of caramel. The typical farmer's side is present, clove, pleasant. Long and powerful finish, which remains quite sweet.

  26. molar3rd scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

    Color: Golden Straw

Nose: Starting on the signature Laddie nose. PC or not PC, this is Laddi-Land. The well known “Condensed Milk” kind of fruity sweetness. Then after a second we dive deeper into Peat-Land:Whoa! We’re in Islay that’s for sure. Amazing mingling of Peat Bogs, Smoke, Ashes, peat fires, and some camp fire (have you ever been to the boy scouts? , this kind of fire, yeah!) and also some rubber tires. I call this Sweet and sour.. Wonderful nose. One cannot ask for more.

Palate: The palate is continuing what the nose had promised. The Condensed milk is gone, but is replaced by sweet smoke, Burnt sugar. The Peat is omnipotent here, and is very much ashy. Many similar notes to the 3D3 I’ve previously reviewed, but with more intensity and power (due to the much higher ABV). The ashes are mingling wonderfully with the sweet smoke, Burnt sugar, and also some rubber tires. In 3 words: Sweet, smoky and spicy.

Finish: Very long and luxuries finish : Peat, Smoke, Burnt sugar (bitterness) , Dark chocolate and Spice (Chilly) are playing for endless minutes on your entire palate. I dig this.

    Conclusion:

This is not a dram for those who do not appreciate peat, and very strong and mascular malts. For a peat head like me, this is peat heaven, very comforting and the extra ABV (61%!) is noticeable and gives that extra punch. I do like it more than the 3D3 (but not a whole lot more) . I am very keen on trying the other PC releases. Port Charlotte distillery is still not operating, but PC is live an kicking. If you enjoy “in your face” peated malts, this is one to have handy on your whisky Shelf.

    Port Charlotte PC7 2001/2008, 61%, OB 2008 - Islay - 83/100
Third batch after the PC5 and the PC6. Alcohol percentage ensure a strong mouthfeel. Wham bam, and then peat, peat peat. Also a little salty. In the end it is a little peppery. Long finish on peat and herbs. Quite nice, but if you're looking for complexity, you will not find it here. Maybe I should use water for another tasting of this Port Charlotte. http://onversneden.com/2009/02/08/een-schep-turf/

    Very sturdy PC, but
the least complex in the series. Adding a spoonful of water makes it more
    interesting.
    • Nose
      Loads of peat on the
nose, but also white fruit, coffee and, just like the PC5, surprisingly soft. Quite
buttery, in fact. Adding water brings out the herbal side. Then it is all about
sea breeze and cow stable. The sweet peat turns into a wonderful smokiness.
    • Taste
      The attack is
powerful and all attention goes to the sweet peat. Loads of pepper, nutmeg and
liquorice. Then finally a slice of pear. Adding water changes this one
considerably. Loads more silt, liquorice and even ashes, but no more fruit to speak
      of.
    • Finish
      The finish is long
and a little salty, on ginger and liquorice.

Nose: Peat, smoke, rubber and mineralic (a bit springbanky so to speak), a bit vanilla, peat sweetness, sweet herbal tea,

Mouth: Peat, Smoke, rounded, peat sweetness

Finish: long and warm, Rubber again, Smoke, peat, apples, sweet herbal tea, peat sweetness and also has some oiliness

Comments: Powerful and delectable. Enjoyed this a lot! The 10yo standard PC gonna be a stunner i`m sure.

    Looking good.
    • Nose
Peat smoke and fire.  Burning wood.  Some perfume.  Alcohol.
    • Taste
Hot and peaty!  Smoked fish.  Apple crisp.  Salt.  New spirit.
    • Finish
Long and smoky with heavy peat that last for a while.

  40. Feusi scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

The sea breeze on the nose, smooth smoke with a little warming nut. The nutty sea breeze, peat and smoke from the finest blend into a whisky definitely better than the 5 and 6 year olds. You can`t wait to the next filling.

Very powerful whisky, 61%. Strong nose, peaty taste and a fantastic finish. There are some flavors and aromas that I don't like, but the whisky is only 7yo...
    • Nose
Of course there is a lot of peat, but it's very spirity. And there is a strange and weird aroma, I can't put my finger on it..
    • Taste
Peat, a lot of peat. And some bitter notes.
    • Finish
Long finish, starts with peat and ends with sweet fruits.

I recenty had 2 different bottlings of the PC7, bottle 12460/24000 and 12503/24000 and both tasted very different. Unfortunatelty there is no cask information on the bottles, but the 12460 had an extreme bacon taste (less intense but the same unmistakable note I had on the only PC8 bottlwe that I tried) that stuck to my throat for a few hours that wasn't present at all in the 12503 bottle. Did anyone else experience this ?

  43. magic_slim scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

A great whisky for peat lovers
    • Nose
A true peat monster, very intensive.
      Bread
    • Taste
Strong, but the peat is integrated quite well.
    • Finish
      Long, warming and pleasant
